Re: Netflix - News & Discussion

But to my knowledge Netflix doesn't remove any shows that they themselves own. Netflix branded shows might be removed but that's because someone else holds the rights, so why would Netflix sell it as part of their service (instead of the righstholders selling it off themselves to other services)?

And so it begins:
https://www.slashfilm.com/1018193/he...-the-streamer/

In a move that will undoubtedly cause some ire, Netflix quietly announced that one of its first original series is leaving the platform in October. "Hemlock Grove," the horror-fantasy series that ran for three seasons, will be taken off of Netflix on October 22. /Film has reached out to Netflix for comment on this decision.
This is the problem with what Netflix labels as their "originals" because it's hard to know what they fully own and what they have exclusive (but eventually expiring) licenses on, but this was one of their very first "originals."

This could easily end up happening with House of Cards and Orange is the New Black as well.

This already happened awhile ago with The Killing. The final season was made for Netflix, but was licensed from FOX. It's long left the service.

The Netflix "Tudum" Live stream is up right now. They are making announcements and showing trailers of new Netflix content.

Netflix Starting From $6.99 a Month

We’re excited to launch Basic with Ads — Netflix’s lower priced ad-supported plan — in November.
  • Unmissable entertainment at unbeatable value: Basic with Ads will cost just $6.99 a month in the US and launch on November 3 at 9 am PT.
  • Available in 12 countries: Basic with Ads will be available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the UK and the US.
  • A plan for every fan: Our current plans and members will not be impacted. Basic with Ads complements our existing ad-free Basic, Standard and Premium plans.
Basic with Ads offers all the features people expect from Netflix’s Basic plan, with a few differences:
  • What stays the same: A wide variety of great TV shows and movies; personalized viewing experience; available on a wide range of TV and mobile devices; change or cancel your plan at any time.
  • What’s different: Video quality up to 720p/HD (now for both our Basic with Ads and Basic plans); average of 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour; a limited number of movies and TV shows won't be available due to licensing restrictions, which we’re working on; no ability to download titles.
In short, Basic with Ads is everything people love about Netflix, at a lower price, with a few ads in-between. Starting in November, signing up will be easy — visit Netflix.com, and register with your email, date of birth, and gender to get started.

Basic with Ads also represents an exciting opportunity for advertisers — the chance to reach a diverse audience, including younger viewers who increasingly don’t watch linear TV, in a premium environment with a seamless, high-resolution ads experience.
  • Ad Format: At launch, ads will be 15 or 30 seconds in length, which will play before and during shows and films.
  • Advertiser Controls: To help advertisers reach the right audience — and ensure our ads are more relevant for consumers — we’ll offer broad targeting capabilities by country and genre (e.g. action, drama, romance, sci-fi). Advertisers will also be able to prevent their ads from appearing on content that might be inconsistent with their brand (e.g. sex, nudity or graphic violence).
  • Verification Tools: We have partnerships with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to verify the viewability and traffic validity of our ads starting in Q1 2023.
  • Audience Measurement: To enable advertisers to understand how Netflix can reach their target audience, Nielsen will use its Digital Ad Ratings (DAR) in the U.S. This will become available sometime in 2023 and eventually be reported through Nielsen ONE Ads.
Basic with Ads will launch just six months after we first announced the option of a lower priced ads plan. None of this would have been possible without our team’s hard work or Microsoft’s extraordinary partnership. The switch from linear is happening at an ever increasing speed, with streaming now surpassing broadcast and cable in the US. We’re confident that with Netflix starting at $6.99 a month, we now have a price and plan for every fan. While it’s still very early days, we’re pleased with the interest from both consumers and the advertising community — and couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead. As we learn from and improve the experience, we expect to launch in more countries over time.

I’ll stick with $15.49, two screens, no ads, full HD.

I’ll give them credit for not raising the price for that plan….yet

Re: Netflix - News & Discussion

I think that price point of 6.99 should reduce churn and bring subs back up.

I only watch a couple/few things a month on Netflix, so I’m game for moving down to this tier.

I understand that situations vary from home to home, but I’m really curious how many would actually downgrade their service to the ad tier to save a couple of bucks? Including here?

Re: Netflix - News & Discussion

I try to watch Netflix at least once a day (meaning I don't binge my shows and plan to watch one episode daily), so the "no ads" tier is something I will stick with.

On the flip side, I have the Hulu Live (no ads) and Disney+ bundle. If my current bundle pricing tier changes to Disney+ (with ads), I wouldn't pay more to have a "no ads" experience with Disney+. While having no ads is nice now, I don't watch Disney+ daily. At most, I'll turn on the app once a week for the new episode premieres. Ideally, I would only purchase Disney+ when my preferred shows are available (month-to-month basis). But Hulu Live has that forced Disney+ / ESPN+ bundle.

No, I'm not giving up my 4K Premium plan.

I was considering it ... until I just read the details. Was hoping the ads were just before the show. Commercials inside content is a no-go for me. All these made-for-netflix tv shows that were made with no commercial breaks are just going to have commercials added in randomly? Or is someone going to painstakingly go through the show and add the commercials at spots that make sense? Bleh ...

They've got apps that will detect a fade to black to insert commercials into, but it makes no consideration for content.

I've got Paramount+ with ads and even when I'm watching shows that originally aired with planned ad breaks, the app ignores the natural breaks and just inserts its ad breaks at certain intervals, even in the middle of a scene.

I watch enough Netflix content that I'll stick with the Standard plan for now.

Re: Netflix - News & Discussion

I only subscribe to Netflix for a couple months out of the year. I subscribed to Standard, because I couldn't abide the SD resolution on Basic. With Basic moving up to 720p, that might be acceptable for me now.

I'm sure you'll record it just to have it for historical reasons.

For the stock people: +2.41m subscribers this quarter, they blew out their Earnings Per Share estimate and are up $32/share in after hours trading.

Stranger Things + Ryan Murphy Shows + Extraordinary Attorney Woo + Cobra Kai did them well.
