I have a few TV series yet they will not add to the TV Show section I am sure it is how they are named/structured, but just cant seem to figure this out For example, I have; C:\DOWNLOADS\TV Shows then in there, individually named folders with for example 6 episodes of TV show, individually named I know I am doing something wrong - any ideas? Re: PLEX has arrived to the XBOX One
Can we blame the Xbox One addition for tonights Plex crash?
|
Re: PLEX has arrived to the XBOX One
I didn't want to create a new thread for Plex, but they pushed a big update for us PlexPass members:
https://blog.plex.tv/2014/11/20/introducing-plex-home/ Finally have proper multi-user controls |
Plex friends?
Can we share usernames?
|
Re: Plex friends?
While an overall grey area, I think that would be frowned upon here. Not sure though.
|
Re: Plex friends?
Wouldn't that involve other people streaming movies from your local storage, bogging down your internet connection and tying up your computer's resources?
|
Re: Plex friends?
You set up a local server. Not a big stretch to figure out in this day and age.

Anyone using Plex with cloud storage?
I currently use Plex with a local NAS. But at least once a year, a drive goes down. And I'm always worried about losing everything.
I noticed that Google Drive offers 1TB for $10/month. That would be a great option for some of my irreplaceable media. Has anyone tried using Plex with a cloud storage service like Google Drive? Is it easy to set-up? How well does it work? Are there any problems like buffering? |

Google Drive offers 15gb for free, so you can toy with it now if you would like to.</s> Nevermind, that was all an "off-line back-up", the newer Plex Cloud exists now, separate from Plex Cloud Sync. I don't see how this is an included feature, as it spins up a virtual Plex server in the cloud for you to use. But hey I'll take it. I just demoed it, it's a little slow to start-up a movie and when you skip around, but otherwise works fine. As I /s'd out above, Google Drive offers 15gb for free, so you can toy with it now if you would like to. |

I don't know how much data you have on your NAS, but if 1TB of Google Drive space was enough for you, then it sounds like you don't have very much data. But even if you have a lot of data, you can easily get a single external 8TB drive like for just $149, and then duplicate your NAS to that drive. Your NAS may have functionality built-in already to periodically backup/sync itself to another volume. |
Re: PLEX has arrived to the XBOX One
It's a grey area, it's a personal library of video/music files they decided to share with you. If it's movies, probably not -- unless they were DRM-free to begin with. If it's home videos, definitely.
All Plex does is present your media collection in a style similar to Netflix and transcodes as necessary. |
Re: PLEX has arrived to the XBOX One
I have a Plex question as I just started using it for my bedroom tv. My media player is on my living room TV. This is the first time I have had more than 1 tv setup at the same time. If the information is incorrect for say a TV show, is there anyway to fix it from the app or can it only be fixed while logged into the computer?
|
Re: PLEX has arrived to the XBOX One
I don't believe you can fix it from the app. If your phone is large enough, you can fix it via Chrome remote desktop, assuming you use a Windows machine for your server.
|
Re: PLEX has arrived to the XBOX One
^ Correct. The only action like that you can do from your devices is delete.
Otherwise you need to log into the website to modify it. |

Re: Plex
The Plex app is in the Amazon app store.
|
Re: Plex
Yeah, I think you still have to sideload Kodi but Plex you can get via the Amazon store.

what does sideload mean? and what is Kodi?
Side loading is opening your device to install non official apps created by third parties. Amazon does not recommend doing it, but many do anyways. You basically void the warranty by doing it. |
Re: Plex
Plex now has free streaming Movies & TV Shows (ad-supported). Update your app and it's available on the sidebar under "Movies & TV".

Re: Plex
Interesting way of trying to infiltrate the pirates. Don't have the movie on your Plex server? Here, it's RIGHT HERE, FREE.
 Small but decent selection of older and obscure movies. The original Evil Dead movies, Battle Royale, The Right Stuff, Over the Top, Repulsion, Raging Bull, etc; |

Plex's new offering doesn't come with a price, but it does come with ads. Even if you're a Plex Pass subscriber, which unlocks numerous features for streaming and managing a personal collection, these new movies and TV shows will still be punctuated by ads. Plex says it will serve "only about one-third the amount of ads you'd expect on cable television" and that while some movies and TV shows will be geo-restricted, the "vast majority" of content will be available worldwide. |

Re: Plex
So I just installed Plex, and am confused by it. There's a section called "Channels" that only has Crackle listed, and no way to add any other other channels. I had thought I read that you could add custom channels, kind of like Roku, so did some searching and found a bunch of plex channels (or plugins) and tried to install them, but none of them worked. Then found some articles implying that plugins and custom channels were not supported anymore. What's the deal?
|
Re: Plex
Custom channels and plugins are dead. Plex got rid of them about a year ago.

Re: Plex
Bump?
Anyone actively using Plex these days? I've come across a weird issue... About a year ago, I was able to play all of my subtitled movies without issue on my Roku Premiere+ using the Plex app. But now, suddenly, I cannot play them if subs are enabled. If I disable them, the files play. The description of every single MKV can be summarized as: - I made the backup copy myself, from my own discs (no piracy here, thanks) - The MKV contains the exact copy of the subtitles that's from the discs, basically called "PGS" format - The video and audio is a direct rip of the BD; no compression. - For anime features, I kept both the English and Japanese audio; English + no subs if my kid is watching (until she can read faster ;) ), Japanese + Subs if I'm watching. I know .SRT subtitles are more widely accepted (and it's great that Plex lets you search OpenSubtitles for replacement files, but most of those I've tried don't sync up with the video because they're from slightly different versions, it seems), but I don't want to go through the hassle of converting my PGS subs to SRT or seek out good SRT files without having to re-edit them to sync. The error I'm getting on Plex on my Roku is along the lines of "This file cannot be played. Direct Stream is OFF." I checked all the settings in the Roku Plex app (turning Direct Stream OFF and ON) and still no dice. I even tried the "beta" app, and it doesn't work. tl;dr - I suddenly can't play ANY files with PGS subs enabled on my Roku Plex app, but I 100% could before without issue. Now I can only play them if I turn the subs off entirely. What gives? Is it some obscure setting in the Plex server app on my PC? I don't think I've changed anything there in a long time. |
Re: Plex
No issues for me lately but I don't use subtitles. Do you have your PC app up to date?
|
Re: Plex
Yeah, I updated it just this last week. I'll dig through the server settings, as I think it has to be something there. I know that some basic transcoding is required when PGS subs are involved, but it sounds to me like the app is saying it's not possible.
|
Re: Plex
What server are you using? I know there is a problem with transcoding subtitles using the latest driver on synology:
https://forums.plex.tv/t/hardware-tr...ses/482428/376 which I don't think is fixed yet, I had to do some manual fix which is buried in that thread somewhere. edited to add: this is what I did to change it back to the old driver on the synology server itself (the other solutions involve ssh'ing into the server to delete the newer driver or getting into hidden settings in plex, this one is just adding some text to a file): https://nascompares.com/2020/07/30/s...720-and-ds420/ |
Re: Plex
I just noticed a really cool feature on Roku's Plex. When you're watching a movie and bring up the progress bar, it shows what time the movie will end. I wish other streaming services would pick this up. It's pretty useful.
Here's a pic with the current time in the upper right corner, and the movie end time in the lower right corner. https://i.imgur.com/R1POskg.jpg |
Re: Plex
I love that new finger function!
|
Re: Plex
Not seeing that on my Nvidia Shield, which replaced my Roku, but it probably will be updated soon.
I put together a Synology NAS this week, since I didn't want to keep using my PC as a Plex server, in addit to wanting better control of my data. I'm loving it, and wish I had done it sooner, though the cost of entry can be steep. I'm backing up 'literally everything' that I have on disc to this thing. Fun! :) |
Re: Plex
That feature has been there for quite a while on Roku, but I agree it's nice to have.

Fun! :) How large/many disks did you put in? I have a four bay but while I bought four drives, I haven't needed the space so I just put three in, and have the fourth as a potential replacement. |
Re: Plex
^ So... about that... I made a bit of a mistake.
Firstly, I'll say that I budgeted a decent amount of cash for this, because I knew it'd be a long-term investment in something I'll use a lot. I also still don't really know how much storage I'm going to need, because I'm copying all my movies/shows uncompressed, (which I've been collecting since 2001) though I am stripping out any 'extras' and unwanted audio/subtitle tracks. Also note that this NAS is replacing my 14TB external drive which I got dirt cheap at Best Buy last year, and which was about 65% full before last week. That said, I got a DS1520+ which has 5 bays. I was seriously considering 4-bays, and maybe that would have been better in the long run, but I wanted the extra bay and expansion slots just in case, y'know? So... after some misunderstanding on my part and jumping the gun (I thought I could start the NAS with two larger bays, and then slowly add smaller/cheaper ones as I go, but apparently it's the other way around, at least if using SHR, the Synology-specific RAID option), I am currently sitting here with 16TB of storage... |
