Re: The Roku Thread
My 55” TCL purchased 23 months ago died. Had a movie paused and was around the corner when I heard a sort of pop. Sounded like a water or soda plastic bottle when it’s partially used and The plastic compressed a bit and suddenly pops out. TV was powered off and the surge protector had powered off. Everything else on it works fine, but the TV won’t power on. Can’t find my paperwork, but pretty sure it was a one year manufacturer warranty. Oh well, at least it was only $300.

If you bought it on a credit card, many CCs double/add a year to warranties.

Re: The Roku Thread
Picked up a Roku Ultra 2020. Disappointed to find out that the following do not work in 4K on this device.
HULU DC Universe Movies Anywhere FandangoNOW Another oddity is the Auto Detect shows my TV as 1080p with Dolby Vision. Yet when I open Disney+ it shows content available in 4K with Dolby Vision. There is no hard setting for Dolby Vision like there is for 4K HDR or 4K. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...d1a6b7c2e4.jpg Hoping the new 9.4 OS update fixes the Auto Detect issue. I suspect the other apps are the apps themselves with the issue and hope for updates there as well. As we have an older AVR that won't pass above HDMI 1.4, we had to be HDMI to TV and Optical to AVR. It was fine last night yet today it was just enough off to be uncomfortable. There was a slight AV sync issue. Had to adjust TV out out to compensate. Hoping this also corrects itself at some point. There are a lot more settings to tweak compared to the Roku 3 this replaced. I must say the speed is very fast in comparison. Overall happy so far (barring the above mentioned items). (Update: We also lost our Angry Birds app. It still is on our Roku 3 until such a point we reset that) |

Are you certain that your HDMI cable is 18 Gbps?
I did some more sleuthing and discovered that the following do work in 4K when selecting 4K HDR directly. DC Universe Movies Anywhere FandangoNOW While HULU still won't recognize it can provide 4K (which might be more to do with HULU than anything else). |
Re: The Roku Thread
Haven't heard back yet from Roku.
Did reach out to LG and they said the OS is too old for the new device. I asked if/when there would be an update and was told they are working on software for older models. Fortunately so far all Dolby Vision I checked content is also able to stream HDR10. So we can keep the direct 4K+HDR setting. Only sad thing is that DV is scene by scene and higher quality in my opinion than HDR and HDR seems a bit more yellow in color to me with heavy red. Yes I've checked all setting I can possibly change to make HDR less yellow and less red. By the way I forgot to mention that there is an Advanced Picture setting in Advanced System Settings that will toggle on/off HDR all the time. It is on by default and our preference was to turn that off. SDR content upgraded by software to HDR wasn't as appealing to us as SDR natively. |

TV is so complicated now

Re: The Roku Thread
Well our Roku Ultra 2020 just bricked. We used it a few hours 2 nights ago. A couple hours last night. And just over 1 hour today.
We started something on Apple TV (first time using it in 4K). It flickered a couple times and boom. Input on TV said no signal found. Attempted reboot with remote commands. Nothing. Unplugged it and kept it unplugged for a time. Plugged back in. Nothing. Connected the HDMI to our older Roku 3. Worked so it isn't an HDMI issue or TV input issue. Will leave it unplugged and try again later or tomorrow. If still bricked, then back to Best Buy it goes for a replacement. |
Re: The Roku Thread
Maybe try switching out the power adapter if it has one.

When going back to Apple TV app on Roku 3, the show we were attempting to watch (that had just started) is there in watch next and starts at where it stopped when the Roku Ultra 2020 stopped working. |
Re: The Roku Thread
It could be faulty though and part of the problem. You can get a replacement for 10.99 on Amazon. Just trying to help you trouble shoot it.

Appreciate that. Considering we bought it only 2 days ago, taking it back for replacement is fastest quickest option.

I didn't realize you only had it for two days. That's bad luck.
And there are a few posts on Roku's site about issues with the new Ultra 2020 model 4800R. Sound issues. Dolby Vision only 1080p. Locking up. I for sure will be watching their forums for this new model. We've always had great experience with Roku. Bought a Roku 2 XS June 2012. Replaced it with a Roku 3 November 2016. Only upgraded to get 4K on our streamer as not all our apps are on our Smart TV as well as the new model offers Dolby Vision. |
Re: The Roku Thread
I have always had great luck with Roku. I did have a problem with my Roku stick after three years, but the problem was resolved with a software update in less than a week.

Re: The Roku Thread
I even tried the hard reset button on the bottom of the unit. Held for much longer than the required 10 seconds. Nothing changed. The light stayed on solid (no blinking indicating reset) and still nothing.

Re: The Roku Thread
ROKU hardware is very flaky in my experience.

Re: The Roku Thread
Certainly not in my experience, and I’ve had more than a handful of units over the years.
b2net, sometimes you just get the bad luck of getting a lemon. Just run it over to Best Buy and grab a new one. I’m sure you’ll be very happy with it down the road. I’d definitely get the Ultra if I was needing an upgrade currently. |

Overall our only complaint about the unit itself in the short time we used it is the inability to get an appropriate Dolby Vision to the TV. Our former Roku's had been great units. Here's to hoping this unit was a lemon and not that there are issues with this particular model. Also hoping our replacement will be another great unit for years to come. |
Re: The Roku Thread
Replacement unit has same Audio to Video sync problem as first unit. We can still overcome that by setting up a small audio delay in our other hardware. BUT this unit has another problem we likely won't be able to tolerate.
Spoiler:
I think we got another bad unit. This unit is still running OS9.3. Not sure if OS9.4 will fix this issue as it could be hardware related. Very tempted to return this unit and go back to using our Roku 3 that has been a great unit for 4 years. |
