Never knew how good the Roku was until I bought one last fall with my att directv now package - definitely the king of streaming.

I had the premier but just recently bough the ultra because it now enables you to be "wired" (you can still be wireless to of course). The remote is bulkier for it's volume control buttons which I like - they're on the side. The power button doesn't shut off the roku it shuts off your tv.

The A & B buttons are app specific, so far the only app I know that utilizes them is netflix.

Yeah, it's a flooded market but I always go back. It's the king of simplicity.

Looks like The Nowhere Man's Free Porn Channel has been pulled(or maybe they discontinued it) from Roku.

Porn Hub(I think) is the only remaining free one.

Not an entirely big loss as PornHub has a giant selection of Free HD porn for one's wanking needs.

Guess I have too many channels on my Roku 3, as they often have to reload. Bought a microSD card that I thought would be compatible, but it isn’t. Does anyone have one or know a specific one that definitely works?

I actually installed an SD card that is compatible and still get channels that need to load.

I got a 2 gig Nook card off eBay and after formatting it worked. The problem is any time Roku does an update it crashes the hardware and you have to remove it. So now I just keep it out and deleted most of the channels.

Frankly, after the Roku 3 dies I'll go with one of the alternatives that gives you a decent amount of storage on-board.

Re: The Roku Thread

A while back I was having problems with my Roku. I forget what it was exactly, but I thought it was bricked. After reading a suggestion online, I removed the SD card and the problem disappeared. So I'm no longer using the SD card.

Back then, I had about a hundred channels. I ended up removing all the channels I never used, and now I'm at 30. Honestly, I could probably cut that in half. It's nice having all those channels, but I only use about a dozen.

For best results, we recommend a Class 2 or greater micro SD card with a minimum of 2GB storage

Thanks everyone. Yeah, I almost want one of mine to fail so I can justify getting a new one.

^ I followed those Roku support directions, but mine didn’t work. Have read elsewhere that they are really finicky on what brands work.

My Roku 3 reboot itself a few times, I used that as justification for a 4 Ultra

I still wonder why we have so many channels on our Roku when we only watch a few.... Yet I sweat at the thought of getting rid of any as we "may" watch it in the future... I think it is called collector mentality... Even with Roku channels... Oh why..

Re: The Roku Thread

I used to add every channel that "looked interesting" and now have about 400- I would delete some of them but it takes a long time for each one. Now I usually check the added channels and only add them if I have time to check them out right then, and delete them if they suck.

b2net 07-28-18 08:46 AM

Re: The Roku Thread

I usually open the channel and check the selection. If there is something we might watch someday, I keep it.

Issue is neither one of us ever goes back to them and watch anything.

We have so much on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, CW (has nothing on Hulu :(), ABC (shows/specials not on Hulu), NBC (shows/specials not on Hulu), Fox (shows/specials not on Hulu), VUDU (our collection and Free streaming titles), DVDs, Blu-rays, 4K dics, etc.

And with limited time to consume all our backlog neither my wife or I ever consider those other channels.

Yet we have them if we ever venture outside the pile of stuff we head to first when making a decision on what to watch.

Of note, I did catch an old TV movie (with commercials) I didn't remember watching on one of the non major channels (can't remember which one) on a lazy afternoon when I had a day off work. Glad I did, not because it was by any means a great movie, but since I can't find any channel for free any longer.

Anyone else use Hulu via Roku smart TV? I use Hulu on multiple devices and the Roku version is the only one where I can't seem to change the subtitle Font and Color. It defaults to yellow which I cant stand. On all my other devices I can change it under settings but on the Roku version there is no such settings. Very annoying.

I was the same. If the channel had something worth watching, I'd add it. Figured I'd watch it someday, but never did. After the great purge, I don't miss them.

I love having access to thousands of channels. But in reality, I only watch about 7-8 on a regular basis (at least once a week). There's around 4-5 channels I watch once a month. And maybe 10 or so that I watch once or twice a year.

New 4K Roku Premiere and Roku Premiere+, and updated Roku Ultra
Lloyd Klarke - September 24, 2018

Today we’re excited to tell you about our lowest priced 4K + HDR streaming players ever, the Roku Premiere and the Roku Premiere+. There will be tens of millions of 4K TVs sold this year, so if you just bought a 4K TV or if you’re thinking about it, these players are an easy way to give your TV the best picture quality it can handle at a fantastic price.

We’re also updating to our top-of-the-line streaming player, the Roku Ultra and we’re unveiling the latest version of our operating system, Roku OS 9 (click here to learn more).

Spoiler:
Roku Premiere and Roku Premiere+

The new Roku Premiere and Roku Premiere+ are the easiest and most affordable way to stream outstanding picture quality.

The Roku Premiere is the simple way to start streaming in HD, 4K or 4K HDR. At just $39.99 MSRP, it’s our lowest priced 4K streamer ever.

It’s small in price and in size. The low profile form factor is tiny enough to tuck underneath or beside your TV but it’s big on the inside with a powerful quad-core processor and compatibility with 11bgn wireless.

Like all of our players, we include an easy-to-use remote with channel shortcut buttons – we even include the batteries. And to help you get set up and streaming right away, The Roku Premiere also includes a Premium high-speed HDMI cable.

The Roku Premiere+, a Walmart exclusive, makes it easy to turn your streaming up a notch at $49.99 MSRP. It includes everything Roku Premiere offers plus a voice remote that has power and volume buttons for your TV.

Improved Roku Ultra

At just $99.99 MSRP, Roku’s most powerful and feature-packed player gets – and sounds – even better than before. It offers everything a streamer could want.

This player is the ultimate in connectivity, offering both Ethernet 10/100 and 802.11ac dual-band wireless. The enhanced remote has TV power and volume buttons, gaming buttons, and a headphone jack for private listening.

And that brings us to change for this fall…we will now be including premium JBL headphones which are valued at $39.95! One other fun update for the Roku Ultra is the addition of two new remote finder sounds: SportsCenter’s Da-Da-Da from ESPN and HBO’s Game of Thrones theme song.

Availability

The Roku Premiere is available for pre-order at Roku.com beginning today and, along with the Roku Ultra, will be available at all major retailers beginning in early October. The Roku Premiere+ will be available exclusively at Walmart and Walmart.com in early October.

Happy Streaming!

These two do not support Dolby Vision, but I don't think that's a big issue for most people these days.

Re: The Roku Thread

You're welcome.
I just bought a Streaming Stick Plus, so of course they come out with new/better/cheaper hardware.
I had a Roku a few years back, but got rid of it, I didn't use it much and the things I did use it for, I could do on Xbox.
I bought the SS+ a little while ago so I could use DC Universe (since it's not on Xbox yet, and since I found out too late my AppleTV is a 3rd generation, and DCU works with 4th and up.)

Granted, I'm subscribed to more streaming services than I was the first time I had it, but man, this thing is cool. I've only got about 20 channels on, and I find myself watching just a few of them, but it's a great piece of hardware and sooo muuuuch content.
PlutoTV is awesome especially for free.

The voice search doesn't work right all the time, but its ~85% success rate is good enough for me. And I love the universal search and Feed. My smart TV has cross platform search too but it has many fewer "channels" to search across.

Only things I don't like about it:
- I wish the remote had backlit or glowy buttons. I often watch TV in a dark room and I haven't memorized all the buttons. - OR -
- I wish my Logitech was fully compatible with controlling the Roku. Unless I'm missing something.
- More channels need to be in multichannel (I know that's the channel, not Roku per se.)

Still, regardless, great device.

Re: The Roku Thread

The newer Roku's aren't very good when it comes too hooking them up too an older TV set.

Except for the Roku Express Plus,I don't think any other model will do it and not sure but I am guessing there are alot of problems with Amazon Fire TV and Sticks hooking them up too older TVs.

RichC2 10-08-18 04:18 PM

Re: The Roku Thread

Yeah, older TVs it the only reason the REP still exists.
