This is good news. The speedtest channel was shut down. Netflix's test doesn't show much higher than their max output rate. VUDU's only shows a compatibility scale aligned to their resolutions. So we've all been in the dark in the true speed of our Roku.

Plex has released a rollback version of their Roku app called Plex Retro. It has the old menu and supports plugins. They say it's just temporary. But hopefully there will be enough demand to keep it active.

Additionally, we have temporarily released the previous Roku version, named “Plex Retro”, as an unofficial channel while we improve our current new channel. Make sure you adjust any settings here as this is a new channel. We want to be super clear and up front here, though: Plex Retro will not be a permanent channel and we plan on removing it once the official channel has been updated with all the goodness and love mentioned in the first bullet; and plugin support will not be returning to the new app.

it depends on what you want and what you’re willing to pay for. Yes some networks aren’t independent a la carte.

There are some free ad supported channels on there.

A great free free one is Pluto TV. Live channels and free on demand movies. Sony Crackle is also free. And Tubi is also free as well.

Borrow a family member's credentials and give them $5 a month. Or get an OTP cable package that supports those channels and use your credentials from there.

I think he borrows an HBO Go credential. But other than that, it's entirely up to him what he can afford to/wants to pay for.

I meant if the family has Xfinity, Uverse or Spectrum or whatever. You can use applications like FXNow (which remains one of the more impressively designed Roku channels) or ESPN, and watch Live + Past Episodes, etc; with those credentials. I know Xfinity also has their Stream App in beta on the Roku now.

I don't think I have any private channels on my Roku anymore (except for PornHub). Roku cracked down on most of the piracy channels.

Ah, got it. And to be clear, I was not asking about anything Illegal. I'm about 10 years late to the Roku game.

I didn't even know about this until it was over, but then it only lasted a day:

Roku reneges on offering Alex Jones' InfoWars channel, removes it amid backlash

Well, that didn't take long.

Streaming device maker Roku pulled the plug on conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and his Infowars channel after having it among its content offerings for less than a day.

Roku on Monday added Infowars, which had been banned back in August from many online outlets including Apple Podcasts, Facebook, LinkedIn, Periscope, Spotify, Stitcher and YouTube. Twitter also banned Jones and the channel in September.

Roku's move quickly led to the appearance and spread of a #BoycottRoku hashtag decrying the channel.

Tuesday night, Roku removed the channel, noting on Twitter: "After the InfoWars channel became available, we heard from concerned parties and have determined that the channel should be removed from our platform. Deletion from the channel store and platform has begun and will be completed shortly," the company tweeted.
Kinda surprised they added Jones in the first place after he got booted from other platforms. What did they expect to happen?

No really. I just clicked through thinking the non premium offerings would be severely limited and they weren't. I would not have done this if my wife was home. Not because she's a prude but because she would have been hogging the Roku watching "Hell's Kitchen" re-runs. :(

What did you think I meant?

I've got a pair and they're really good. But they only work with Roku TVs.

I almost pulled the plug and bought a pair this morning, but then realized that the width of my TV runs exactly that of my stand, so I can't place them on either side. Putting them in front would block parts of the screen and I don't want to mount them. The small bookcases on either side are filled just how I like them and adding speakers would look cluttered. However the second shelf of my TV stand has room for them. The shelf is a foot off the ground and has about an 8.5" clearance. Would they fit and is that a decent place to put them sound projection-wise? (FYI the sides and front of the stand are open, not enclosed.)

I went through several YouTube reviews of the speakers (what's up with the slideshow ones using a robo voice?) and came across this video from last year's CES:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/4M5mLA7IYuA" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

It's a beta version in a soundbar form. Too bad they haven't put that out (yet), as I think that might work better for me, as I could just put it in front of the TV. The easy connectivity with my TCL is a real selling point with the current speakers over getting a different brand's soundbar, though.

No, the Roku channel and it's content (ad supported is still free)

They are offering more premium content like Showtime, Starz and EPIX that can be bought and added into the Roku channel. It's similar to Amazon channels.
