Thanks for the Borders tip. I returned the Live Free or Die Hard 1-disc DVD that my friend gave me for X-Mas (I already had the 2-disc set) and got a return gift card for $21.64 ($19.99 + tax).....Unfortunately, it was on sale, but hell it's better than nothing.

I'm surprised it went so smoothly the girl scanned it, got a manager approval and the gift card was mine!

I couldn't find movies at borders.com. Can you shop directly at amazon.com and use the gift cards? Their gc policy says no.

I don't understand the problem that you are experiencing. www.borders.com takes you to the Amazon site. As BuddhaWake stated, you must link through www.borders.com when using gift cards as payment.

I don't know. It was weird this morning, there was no mention of DVDs or a way to search for them. Maybe I'm just going crazy.

www.bordersstores.com

Then go to "Shop borders.com"
and it will link you through to a special Amazon page. You can only buy CD/DVDs/Books though....gold box items will NOT work.

That's why you put it in a bag before you walk in.

But serriously, all the borders DVD's are sealed in a security case and all of them have a distinct Border's price tag on the front. Don't know how they would have thought you stole them.

i've never received a present with a price tag still on it.

You can do returns all year long, not just after Xmas. The only thing that is required is that the store that you return it to has the title currently in stock(they will look it up on their computer to check to see if it's in their inventory). You can check an individual store's inventory at this site- www.bordersstores.com . They will give you a gift card that you can use online at Amazon. However, I heard that Borders is going to start their own online site early next year and will break their arrangement with Amazon(you might want to use up your credit quickly because I doubt that the prices at the new site will be cheaper than that at Amazon). I hope this helps.
Did they recently change the return policy? Around a year ago I tried returning a few items, they didn't accept one of them because it hadn't been sold within the past 6 months. I was asked for my ID IIRC.

What I meant was that each DVD/CD product Borders sells has a Borders price tag on it and it's sealed in a plastic security case. With their security cameras, there is no way you could have popped the security case and plucked off the price tag. I walked in with my no receipt return and they accepted it no questions asked.

As long as the store carries it, they will take it back. Check Bordersstores.com and see if your local store carries the item. No ID was required, I filled out my own "Max Fischer" name and address all by myself!

I tell them upfront that I received the items for Christmas and they might not have been bought at Borders and they still let me return the stuff.

Same thing I said. I was honest.

But do they really think people buy DVDs at Borders at 2x the price at Best Buy? C'mon.

I have another stack going back tomorrow night at a different Borders. Gotta make room for the new HD/BR movies!

I've returned stuff to Best Buy during the holidays with no receipt in the past. Just make sure they sell the item. They will only give you it's most recent lowest sale price. So if the item normally sells for $19.99 and was on sale during Black Friday for $4.99, you will only get the cheaper price.

One thing to look out for is that may get you is that certain retailers like Best Buy or Circuit City sometimes has a distinct UPC sticker on their DVD's to cover the original one.

That's fine...two of the three have Best Buy price stickers - the third one doesn't, but my mother said she got all three of them at once. I'll probably give it a shot right before close tomorrow. Would they just give an in-store credit?

I'll be returning my "free" sealed Dukes of Hazzards HD DVD in a few days. Should get me $24.99 at Best Buy. This is the best time to unload sealed movies you have.

I'm wondering what my chances are in returning my Halo 3 Legendary Edition w/ helmet to BB. They have it listed on their website, but with no in-store p/u available.

My local BB had a whole stack of them last Saturday, but they were onsale for 79.99 I think, so if you bought it new, even if they took it back, you might lose some money.

Well, considering I only paid about $30 for it... I might make out ok.
