The 15th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

The 15th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread
2024
List thread will be here when posted..

The Details

Challenge starts July 31st at 12:01 am local time.

Challenge ends September 3st at dawn.* (2024 only! Will go back to Sept. 1st at dawn in 2025.)

Rules

Movies/TV shows should be labeled Animation from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a Animation label from one of those sites. Action/Animation would be fine.

This is the challenge where any and all types of animation is welcome, computer, hand drawn, puppetry, stop motion, etc. The entire movie/show does not need to be completely animated. Something like Roger Rabbit or a Ray Harryhausen film would generally be allowed.

If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's animation or not, ask here.

Animation documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews that are just fluff promo pieces.

As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.

Watching the movie/show with the commentary can counted as unique items.

Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie/show will also count.

Lists

Since the general consensus seems to be for the easy counting method we will go with that. However, it is not required, so if you wish to count another way, feel free, as I will not be doing stats.

Switch the link for Saturn films to this: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/s...d+film/ljg765/ (Also, note to self, update it when there is a new movie to add!)

Add David Ogden Spiers to actor list?

add the DC Animated Universe/Original Movies/ Animated Movies Universe to the studio part of teh check list?

Consider extended challenge permanently through Labor Day weekend?

Re: The 15th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

Please vote on whether or not to extend the challenge to Aug. 3 at dawn this year only! Thank you! I set the poll up to be up for a little longer than a week, so will announce the extended time then.

I think the check list looks pretty good. I did add the newest Saturn Award winner as a suggestion, but otherwise haven't changed it. I know we changed up the icheckmovies.com section last year, so if someone wants a different list or had issues with it last year, now's the time to let me know!

I'll get the list thread up in the next 3-4 days once I see the feedback on the checklist.

Re: The 15th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

I was thinking we could add a new checklist item this year. A 'Live action movie version of Animation'. Could do a television version too, but there would be fewer options. Here's a list I compiled for movies:

Lupin the Third: Strange Psychokinetic Strategy(1974)
The Guyver(1991)
Guyver: Dark Hero(1994)
City Hunter(1993)
The Flintstones(1994)
Fist of the North Star(1995)
George of the Jungle(1997)(has sequel)
Dudley Do-Right(1999)
Inspector Gadget(1999)
Asterix and Obelix vs. Caesar(1999)
The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas(2000)
Boogiepop and Others(2000)
Josie and the Pussycats(2001)
Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra(2002)
George of the Jungle 2(2003)
Dororo(2007)
Asterix at the Olympic Games(2008)
Speed Racer(2008)
Dora and the Lost City of Gold(2009)
The Last Airbender(2010)
Astérix and Obélix: God Save Britannia(2012)
Rurouni Kenshin(2012)
Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno(2014)
Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends(2014)
Parasyte: Part 1(2014)
Parasyte: Part 2(2015)
Ghost in the Shell(2017)
Nicky Larson et le parfum de Cupidon(2018)
Kim Possible(2019)
Alita: Battle Angel(2019)
Rurouni Kenshin: The Final(2021)
Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning(2021)
Astérix and Obélix: God Save Britannia(2023)
Knights of the Zodiac (2023)
City Hunter(2024)
Golden Kamuy(2024)

No animated characters allowed, like Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000), Yogi Bear (2010), etc...because that's an animated movie. There's some wiggle room, like for, say, Parasyte, the parasites have to be animated, but those movies could be excluded and there would still be plenty to choose from.

Re: The 15th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

For an addition to the check list, would anyone be interested in adding a check to "watch a live action remake of an animated film?" Or "watch an animated film and its live action remake?" Or would that be too niche? Disney has done quite a few now, Mulan, Little Mermaid, Lion King, Aladdin, Alice in Wonderland... but it wouldn't have to be the same studio who did the live action as the animated film.

There's The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Hobbit, Hunchback of Notre Dame, several Alice in Wonderlands, Tarzan...I can think of several others as well.

That's funny. I almost posted the exact same thing while you were posting this one! Mine's slightly different, "Watch a live action remake and the animated film," though I did suggest it could just be the live action film as well. You certainly added to my list of options! I can definitely see the point of not allowing animated elements like in Mary Poppins though if it's just a brief moment (say less than 5% of the film or on screen for less than 5 mins,) I could see it being allowed but would be willing to listen to arguments against it.

Re: The 15th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

I've been on vacation for most of the past week and just got home this morning. While there's not much time left for the sci fi challenge, I have a lot of animated sci fi that I had been considering anyway but was on the fence about.

I stopped at Walmart on my way home this morning just to check their DVD selection. Saw quite a few things, including the Oscar winner from last year, The Boy and the Heron. Considering I get paid on Thursday, I decided to hold off on that. However, I did find a blu ray of the old Batman cartoon, The New Adventures of Batman and Robin , that I remember watching as a kid.

I also would like to order the 80s She Ra: Princess of Power , to complement the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe that I bought last year, even if I didn't make it through MOTU before the month is up.

It's looking like we're going to have those extra days! It's a bit early, but I'll work on getting the list set up (and since no one's commented, on the check list with the new item of "watch an animated film and its live action remake."

Everything should be finalized by this evening.

Re: The 15th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

While on Amazon yesterday placing my order for She Ra, I decided to search for Studio Ghibli movies. There were quite a few double packs, but what caught my eye was a Miyazaki Museum collection of 17 of his movies, which I am guessing is everything but the most recent movie. It was a decent price, probably because of multiple movies per disc, but I thought it was a good way to dip my toe into his work. Over time I can always upgrade the individual movies. I've only seen a few of his movies but thought that they were all masterpieces. Though I don't know at all if I will revisit Grave of the Fireflies because I was bawling by the end of that the first time I watched it.

I've really enjoyed Miyazaki's movies. There's maybe only one or two that I haven't seen and don't own. Grave of the Fireflies was so good, but I'll likely never watch it again. I kind of feel the same way about it as I do Schindler's List. Everyone should see it at least once, but it's kind of traumatizing. I keep a running list of the ones I still have to purchase on Amazon so I can see when there are deals on. It doesn't happen too often, but a couple times a year, prices will drop and I'll grab one or two. I haven't had a chance to see the newest one though.

My favorites are Ponyo, Howl's Moving Castle, Arietty, Kiki's Delivery Service...well, I enjoy almost all of them except for Pom Poko (though he's only a producer on that one.)

Re: The 15th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

I kicked off this morning with a double credit entry. I have a box set of the original G1 Transformers series that I have been working my way through off and on. I just finished the second season episode, 'The Gambler' and thought that a guest star, Devcon, had a familiar voice. I looked up the character, and I was right. He was voiced by John Stephenson, both Thundercracker, and the voice I thought of, the season 3 character, Kup.

I hope everyone's start to the challenge is going well! I have a bit of an unexpected trip pop up for this weekend. I will be checking in once or twice a day, so while it might take a bit to respond, I will definitely answer them!

Re: The 15th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

While browsing eBay last night, looking for Southern Cross, the only Robotech saga that I don't own, I came across a great deal. The Protoculture Collection from years back was being sold for $35, disc only. At that price, I didn't care. This has long been a grail for me, because not only is it the complete series, but an additional 7 discs of special features.

Watched Tante Hilda! (2013), tonight, a French movie I tripped over that happily piqued my curiosity. It's an ecological disaster movie with a touch of horror and romance and family drama... We're not talking triffids, but these plants are still pretty nasty. It's like watching a mass extinction event on fast forward. Worth a watch.

Re: The 15th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

I didn't have a ton of time yesterday to watch, so I watched a handful of shorts. One of which, Frank Film, was very...unique. It does qualify for one of the check list items and if you want to see something that kind of is confusing and kind of hurts your mind, check it out.

This afternoon, I watch a cute short from Simon's Cat called Simon's Cat Going for the Gold - Olympic Games Color Special (it's on Youtube) if you're a fan of that series.

Watching Wish for the first time tonight. So far, it's okay, but still getting into the film.

Edited to say that Wish is bland. The story, the songs, the villain...all bland. About the only entertaining thing is seeing the Easter Eggs.

I didn't have a lot of time yesterday myself. I did however catch Secret Of NIMH yesterday morning while channel surfing. Later on in the morning I caught the first episode of Ewoks on Disney+ as well. Other than that, I didn't get anything else in. Particularly since I was dealing with an internet outage for the rest of the day due to storms in my area.

How did Secret of NIMH hold up or haven't you seen it before? I should give it a rewatch as I haven't seen it in probably 10-15 years myself. I loved the book as a kid, but just don't remember much about the movie.

Hope your storms have gone away! We had rain all day yesterday but other than some tv (satellite) outages, we were fine.

Re: The 15th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

^ I've seen it quite a few times over the years and used to have the DVD many years ago. I know it was a very early Don Bluth work, but at least in my opinion, I thought it still held up quite well.

No more tornadoes, but I have had another internet outage today as well due to severe thunderstorms that have been moving through for most of the day. Hopefully, starting tomorrow things are due to be better. At least until the remnants of Debby hit this weekend.

This is a bit random, but I got frustrated with the icheckmovies Saturn Award winner list not being updated so I made my own. I also added the 2 original movies which also count for that checklist item. If you're interested in it, it'll be here. Next year, I'll add it into the checklist itself.

Re: The 15th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

Decided to watch Secret of NIMH and I had forgotten how dark it is but I did enjoy it. Since I also have the sequel, I decided to watch that too. That is not great. Very forgettable.

Re: The 15th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread

I watched Violet Evergarden: The Movie on Netflix for one of my foreign language checks this week. I don't know if anyone else has seen this movie but I thought I would recommend it to everyone. I am more of an action/horror/sci-fi/comedy fan myself but I like to watch all genres and I felt strongly enough about this one to recommend it. It is more drama than anything but it is also romanace in parts. I won't give any of the plot points away but if anyone has room for a 140 minute Japanese movie in their watches give it a shot and let me know what you think. I might be way off base with how this one ranks...

Sounds interesting. I don't know that I'll get to it this challenge, but I'll have to keep it in mind for next year's.
