SNL 12/16/23 (S49E08) — H: Kate McKinnon - MG: Billie Eilish

I always look forward to the Christmas episode... especially Colin and Michael's "gifts" to each other.

Kate will do fine and she'll probably resurrect a few of her characters... and I'm calling it now, she'll bring back Rafferty and talk about being abducted by elves and forced to work as a sex slave at the North Pole.

Anyways, this looks promising.

Re: SNL 12/16/23 (S49E08) — H: Kate McKinnon - MG: Billie Eilish

I'm hoping they do a follow up to last year's Christmas where Eilish played the girl asking the "lonely old woman" (McKinnon) in the apartment building next door to dinner. "Will there be any Jews there?" "Can you check?"

(I hope it's ok to post that....obviously I'm not siding with the McKinnon character, I just laughed at the overall inappropriateness of it.)

I hope they don't repeat anything she has done in the past. New material, please!!!

That may have been the best joke swap they’ve done.

The actual show was terrible. The film sketch near the end had a few funny, but that’s about it.

McKinnon seemed to trip over a few over her lines.

I got lightheaded when Colin asked Haddy Davis to bump it.

The joke swap was great, as usual.

They took the joke swap to the next level with the civil rights activist sitting next to Jost.

One of the rare times they were no political sketches and you had to wait for WU for those jokes.

I did not think the Abba sketch was as hilarious as it looked on-screen.

Gifts from Mom was better.

I was hoping for maybe a Vanessa Bayer cameo or at least get her to host the show in the future.

The streak of hot attractive pop singers ended with Eilish but will start again in Jan 2024 with Renee Rapp.

The look on Colin’s face when he read the cue cards that told him to do the fist bump was hilarious.

I'd take Billie Eilish over any of the hot attractive pop singers they've had this season! That first song from the Barbie movie was one of the best musical performances I've seen on SNL ever. People who aren't impressed with her are usually not aware that she is 21 years old and writes most of her songs. She's like a Taylor Swift with a better voice and who plays down her looks. She's actually hiding a voluptuous body and I think she's beautiful.

okay, enough of my fan-girling!

Agreed the show was horrible. Best part for me was Kate McKinnon's monologue. Even the Whiskers R We sketch was a bomb but it's always played better when McKinnon does it alone.

Ego Nwodim's Aunty during update also gave me a few chuckles. Good for her for getting some sketch time. She's been killing it with her recurring lawyer from Temecula sketch.

I'd say the Black Superman one was the best. But this one was very good.

Totally agree with the rest - just terrible.

And apparently she was just a made up character, not a real activist (but it didn't look like Jost was in on that joke )

I don't listen to her music but thought Billie sounded damn good.

Her brother hamming it up on the piano behind her drives me crazy! He may be a musical genius who contributes a huge amount to her work, but nobody wants to see you, FINNEAS!!!

They will never top Jost sitting next to a woman, who he thought marched with MLK, and having to make jokes about King's widow and Obama, and then trying to fist bump her.

I was in tears!!

There's something about artists like Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga that pose a conundrum for me. I think they are amazing talents. When I watch any live performance by any of them I am always amazed. But when I try to listen to their produced recordings, for the most part they do absolutely nothing for me. I really wish I could get into their music more, because I do love their live performances so much, but every time I try I just can't keep listening. Maybe I should just look for live recordings or something.

This show was underwhelming considering the host. The Jost/Che joke swap was clearly the highlight.

I caught up with the rest of the episode last night, and that was the first time I was impressed by Billie Eilish (on her performance of "Merry Little Christmas"). I think I was always a little jaded since the first song I'd heard from her was that incredibly mediocre "Bad Guy" or whatever it was called. But ok, yeah, the girl's got pipes.

You mean her worldwide #1 chart-topping hit that catapulted her to superstardom?

The Grammy-winning song and record of the year?

One of the best 200 songs of all time according to Rolling Stone.

That mediocre song?

Yeah, and the song is not even on the most recent Rolling Stone list of the top 500 songs of all time. In fact, it doesn't appear to be on any of their top song lists. She is number 198 on their most recent list of the top 200 singers of all time.
Regardless, the lists that Rolling Stone publishes are bullshit most of the time anyway.
