Best Buy to no longer carry DVDs and Blu-Rays as of end of 1st Qtr 2024. Details below.

Just found out from Bill Hunt's The Digital Bits website that Best Buy will cease carrying DVDs and Blu-Rays BOTH in-store and online as of the end of March/end of first quarter 2024...

so when will they actually have the going-out-of-business sale? Its been years since I set foot in the store and it's not a pleasant memory.

They make their money with appliances and services (Geek Squad). They wouldn't make this move (which I believe is still rumored) if they were making money hand over fist with media or if media was still a draw to get people into the store.

We only have one Best Buy in my small Canadian city, and they haven't had DVD/Blu-Rays/4K in-store for 2-3 years now. Shame about online as they would have some good deals around the holidays.

Back in the mid-oughts Best Buy would set up a table every Tuesday with that week's DVD releases, 2-disc special editions with fancy lenticular covers. Those were the days.

A few of the Best Buy B&Ms in my area were consistently stocking titles I wanted, so this is a bit of a bummer.

It didn't help that on various forums, folks were waiting for Amazon to Price Match Best Buy's sales rather than support. Although, I don't think Best Buy's long game was to remain in Physical Media sales anyway. Those days have been long gone.

There are plenty of Target & Walmart B&Ms in the area but combined, those stores have less variety and focus a bit more on DVD.

There's still a wonderful chain of independent stores that sell 4Ks, BDs & DVDs about 35-minutes from where I live, so I'll probably be spending more time there in 2024 for my in-store purchases.

That thread was from 2017 as this is newly-updated info which is relevant to the now, not then. Best Buy did confirm this news, for the record.

I'm not trying to be a smartass but you being a member of this forum since 2009, you have to realize how the forum works.

Why don't you go check out that thread and then come back to me.

It's been discussed since first reported on The Digital Bits.... Just start with this post in that thread - posted 10/12/23:

Just go with the updated materials from a week or so ago and call it a day to reflect its relevancy to today and be done with it. For the record yes, you were being a smartass, but whatever.

Excuse me, Mr. Know it All...all I was doing was just reporting what was found on Bill Hunt's Digital Bits website to reflect the news that the retail outlet is discontinuing carrying DVDs and the like come March 2024 and them making it official, nothing more, nothing less.

For the record yes, you were being a smartass and I'm well aware of how the forums work, thank you, as you have the option to read what's written or not, that's your call to make but no need to get testy about it. Take a chill pill and relax!

There, I got back to you. Have a good day.

Man. Try to be helpful and this is what you get...

If you look at my first post here, it was just trying to be informative and help you and anyone else that may look at this thread and not know there was much more discussion going on with this same topic on the forum. You aren't/weren't going to get much response over here in this part of the forum (it is basically dead year-round with the exception of the Halloween challenge), and I just was trying to advise so you might want to direct your energy over there. That was it.

But then you responded like that info over there was irrelevant, as if a 2017 thread cannot be resurrected with new info and utilized...something that is done in this forum and others daily. I really wasn't trying to be a smartass but kinda hard not to sound like one when trying to explain to you how the forum works when you have been a member so long. BobO'Link said basically the same thing I did in my initial post but just gave the link to the particular post that started the rediscussion instead of just the thread link as I did. I assumed I didn't have to lead the horse to water on this one. Oh well.

And just FYI, the discussion is still going on pretty good over there. I am sure your thoughts would be welcomed and discussed more in that busier thread.

Thanks for getting back to me. Hope my explanation helped.

A good day to you as well, sir.

I've said what I needed to say and just felt it was important to state the obvious as I wasn't even aware of a 2017 thread showing up as I'm only on this site every so often, so I made an error in not knowing this topic was under previous discussion so that is my bad on that, I admit it, but now I said what I needed to say and consider this done and over with and now moving onwards like we all should.

It is what it is but there you have it, some updated info for everyone on this and the other thread as well.

In other news, Walmart might be following suit on doing what Best Buy will be doing here, from what I have heard and read. Stay tuned.

So is this a bitchfest thread, or are we going to discuss Best Buy stopping all sales of film on physical media? I can't say I'm surprised by them dropping them in store, that writing has been on the wall for years. I am surprised by them dropping them from their website.

This has been in the works for some time. Best Buy was looking for an exit strategy from media all the way back in 2018/2019. I am surprised they are completely shutting down the online business as well, their brand alone would keep an online shop viable for a few more years at minimal expense. Tells me they don't want their store employees having to deal with media exchanges at all and want completely out of the space.

I assume this was the impetus behind Walmart making an offer to Hollywood to serve as distributor for all remaining DVDs and BDs.

Well, there’s been a lot of discussion in the original thread. The bitchfest is about whether it should also happen here.

If this is a bitchfest, let's go to the queen herself
