I was corrected in an earlier post. The commentaries from the original releases started in season 3. I can't verify those are in the new releases, but I would imagine they were. It sounds like (for the most part) that they just used the same discs as the original releases but dropped the 7th disc.

You say that they will offer them again in the future with some sort of boxed set. Why not do it now? Why have 4 releases? My god, is this the Evil Dead school of DVD releasing? If it truly a rights issue or something of that nature with the extras, I CAN understand that, but it's not like they would be driving up the prices of these new versions by including an extra disc and the 50 Megs to include 3-4 additional commentaries a season.

FWIW, I own the original releases and the mythology sets.
The answer is quite simple Numes... money, money, and more money.

The X-Files is a hot franchise. It's a classic. People bought the bigger box sets that cost an arm and a leg. You have people who have been waiting for some sort of price drop, now getting into buying the seasons. They have already targeted those who are not afraid to spend the money, those who cared enough for the X-Files got the big sets and got all the features that came with it. Those who didn't want to spend the big money, can now own the show and I can see FOX thinking to themselves those who waited probably don't care for the extras. Yes, the extra disc wouldn't cost them much more money... I agree with you there.

But you constantly have re-releases of DVD's. Once a new one comes out, the old ones may as well not exist anymore. With this in mind, we're getting re-releases of all the seasons 1-9 right now in the newer slimmer designs that are becoming more the usual for TV sets. Now, with their new marketing plan of these slim sets without any of those old extras that already exist, it's completely logical to assume that in the future they could have a big 'special' box set that includes the entire series, as well as all these extras. And people will buy it too, because the X-Files has a large almost cult following.

This way everybody is covered, the fans from the start who got everything they wanted, the other people who didn't want to spring for the more expensive sets, and now most likely all the collector's who would buy a box set with all the bells and whistles... or those who are just plain waiting for a boxed set.

To us the consumer, yes, this seems pretty bad considering the fact that one extra disc, and some sort of extra slim package case to accompany a seventh disc wouldn't cost FOX much more money at all. I totally agree with the arguments that everybody here has about them not being included. Don't get me wrong.

But from a business standpoint, FOX will always make people double dip and being that the X-Files was one of their biggest hits with a huge following, why wouldn't they see dollar signs behind this now? To them, it's all about money which is no surprise, and there's nothing we can do about it now other than to either buy the old sets, or wait for some super boxed set.

Another thing to consider. Had they included the bonus disc, they most likely would have had to include a fourth slim case (or go with some other option people would have bitched about like a paper envelope, double sided disc, overlapping discs in the third case, etc.). That would have increased the size of the complete series by a third. In the end, the space taken up by the 9 sets would be the equivilant of 12 sets. With shelf space being tight these days for both owners and retailers, that's an unattractive proposition. Especially since they're marketing these new sets as having new, slimmer packaging.

I still say, I wish I had those bonus features, but I'm more happy with the price. And when I picked my sets up at Best Buy, they had lots of the older sets as an option for those who really want the bonus material. I just don't see the problem here. I'd think those people who paid premium prices would be thrilled that they got a little something extra for not holding out like the rest of us.

Hey guys, just replying to a post made earlier about the sixth disc of season two missing the season finale. It's looking like it's only applicable to the Canadian "bilingual" editions of the set. I bought mine, brought it home, realised that the last episode was missing and took it back to Wal-Mart. I opened two more of them there, and still the same problem. After taking all of their copies of it off the shelves, they gave me my money back and suggested that I try Future Shop thinking that this may just be an isolated incident with the "batch" they recieved at the store". I headed over, bought it at Future Shop and opened it to find that it was missing it as well. I opened yet another one there and it wasn't there either. Totally pissed, I got my money back, went home and called Fox. They're supposed to contact me within twenty four hours after they "look into it". This totally sucks. Fox, if you're reading this, you're idiots.

You know, I've read tons of posts in the past from people royally pissed that they ponied up big bucks for a set only to see the price drasticly reduced. Here Fox has reduced the price but "rewarded" the hard-core fans who paid big bucks early by giving them more for the higher price they paid yet folks still complain. I'm not one to defend the studios but in this case, it looks like Fox couldn't win no matter what they did.

I am still debating on picking these up. I just smell Complete (Buffy) Series written all over this, give or take a year or 2. I just feel it in my bones

Meh. I just got mine in the mail today and it was missing on Disc 6 for me as well. So I checked online to see if it was a common problem. I guess I'll have to contact Amazon and see if I can get a replacement. I just checked the listing on Amazon.ca and it must just be on the Canadian Bilingual editions of them based on the user comments. I should have known something was wrong with it when it was selling $5 cheaper than the Season 1 and 3 sets.

I'd actually guess that we'll be seeing a complete set in November, for the holidays. (Hopefully with the missing extras on a bonus disc, to encourage purchase... )

That may very well be. But I was tired of waiting and couldn't pass up $25 per season. If you're right, then that will be nice for those who waited. If you're wrong, then...

Either way, I'm enjoying the heck out of my sets right now and come November, I'll have finally collected, watched and enjoyed the entire series. Several times perhaps.

For those who have been to BestBuy recently... what are their prices for Seasons 4 through 9? Are they still near $100, or have they dropped to under $50?

I recently sent back a defective Season 6 to FOX, and it takes them 5 or 6 weeks to send out a replacement. The new Season 6 is supposed to be released in 5 weeks... hopefully they send back one of the original releases. But I may have pick up an old Season 6 from BestBuy just in case FOX sends me a new one.

Any idea when we'll see a season 7-9 price drop?

Hopefully Best Buy won't raise the price again. But even at $28 per season this last time, it's still a hell of a deal!
