Re: Movies you're surprised that haven't been released on Blu yet

There are movies one would LIKE to see on Blu, like Idiocracy, or Six Degrees Of Separation.

And then there are movies that I'm SURPRISED haven't been released like the Cheech and Chong and the...

re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - #2, but we try harder

Well, there is also the part of physical where one looks for the disc, gently hold it and put it in the tray (believe me, there are lots of folks like me that somehow clumsily damage everything we...

Re: If physical media went away completely, would you be ok?

I* should clarify that my perspective in bringing the Screening Room topic up here, is that I belong to the school of thought that the underlying driver behind consumer decision making is one of...

Re: If physical media went away completely, would you be ok?

That's all I'm saying. Many conversations here are "absolute" in nature, meaning we cannot totally travel to the future and confirm without any doubt that something has indeed "happened" or "not...

Re: If physical media went away completely, would you be ok?

Sure, hopefully this will help. I don't have any interest in debating my personal preferences, I am just passing on some information about industry delivery channels that compete with physical media....

Screening Room

Will Napster co-founder Sean Parker's Screening Room disrupt the film industry?

He is pitching Hollywood on an unorthodox home-video service called Screening Room that would give users access to...

Re: What Type of Media Will Exist and You use in 20 years?

I'm just adding my experience, but it was December/2015, and this is how it went:

1) Drove to Best Buy and bought 4k set for ~$800.00.
2) Came home, hooked up the TV to an ethernet cable...

Re: If physical media went away completely, would you be ok?

There's collecting to collect, and there's collecting under duress. I completely agree with your comments above, and I also agree that it can be in the eye of the beholder where to draw the line.

Re: If physical media went away completely, would you be ok?

I would predict that yes, the model above could continue to occupy a niche similar to vinyl today. It will be a "collector's" experience for true die hard fans.

However, they can't drive the...

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

It's probably old hat now, but "Special Features" were a new feature when DVDs were coming up. I can't think of a Blu-Ray exclusive feature, beyond better quality.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

No. Personally, I don't. So we agree on UHD Blu-ray. I've stated several times that physical media is kaput. I believe UHD will be used to mass market streaming over physical, but when I mentioned...

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

I would agree, but I am not seeing a significant price increase in 4k TVs. Yes, we can debate on the high end, but in terms of the masses, the prices of mid and low range 4k sit nearly side by side...

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

I'm fine with questioning the timeline, that part is not my main point. Make it 15 years. What I'm trying to put forward is the drivers will not be reliant on the consumer's "need" for UHD specs....

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

I'm in agreement with you about this TODAY. What I'm saying is that it will evolve, similar to other technologies where consumers will piecemeal their upgrades via more incremental upgrades. Yes, day...

Re: If physical media went away completely, would you be ok?

So true. It is the prevailing zeitgeist of our technology binging culture in 2015.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

Yes, they don't care. And that's why the scenario you put forth above is unrealistic and constraining. There isn't a conscious decision as you describe above where somehow folks have an itch to get...

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

Actually, its a bit different point in context of my post. My point was that when people replace their TV (for any reason, including due to failure), they go to the big box store, and there is a 4k...

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

I think many of these debates center on "what people want". That, in all likelihood, is not the driver.

UHD (whatever that definition is, streaming/physical/specs) will penetrate the market...

Re: If physical media went away completely, would you be ok?

Yep, today they're called "channels". But they will be without the technical bandwidth limitations of today's tv over cable.

I anticipate a similar bundling or other similar financial model, as...

Re: If physical media went away completely, would you be ok?

I do think there would still be a quality loss in streaming vs physical as there is today. Not due to limitations, just due to the predictable "efficiency"/lowest common denominator compression happy...

Re: If physical media went away completely, would you be ok?

I hate it. But that's exactly where I think this is going. The infrastructure may ride on a cloud host like an Amazon (like Netflix), but the control and cost/profit ratio for streaming must be huge...

Re: If physical media went away completely, would you be ok?

Due to the inevitability of streaming only, in 2009 I started acquiring HD copies of the top 1k classic films I wanted to own. I'm done, give or take some future upgrades to better versions. But the...

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

Right. That's the PR, we know that thank you! It's also clear that they WILL get there eventually. However, it's looking like there is no rush to get there, and that's the conversation I was putting...

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

I agree. In fact, I'm expecting that "4k" content will be closely guarded and used to drive consumers further to streaming/subscription behavior at the pace that their infrastructure and delivery...
