We don't agree on much, but this is spot-on.

Posted youtube link to Live & Dangerous '78...one of greatest live albums ever recorded. Most tracks vastly superior to studio versions.

If the intro with crowd chanting in unison "Thin Lizzy! Thin Lizzy!" followed by the great sustained chord whipping the crowd into a frenzy segueing into the opening riff of "Jailbreak" tearing through your speakers doesn't get your heart pumping, better head toward the doc in a box.

I'm fine with all of the choices, except for Green Day. I simply don't feel like they've had a lasting contribution to music, at least compared to a few of the other available choices.

Lou Reed gets in on the same ballot with fucking Joan Jett and Green Day. What an embarrassment.

Probably said this fifty times before, but Richard Thompson.

Saw a quote in a doc on the Man saying, "Bob Dylan is America's Richard Thompson." Maybe a trifle overstated, but his pioneering work in folk rock with Fairport followed by early solo work followed by classic albums with Linda followed by his long solo career since has made the man a triple-threat legend for performing, guitar playing (session work alone ought to earn him a nomination...has played on so many other big name's albums), and especially songwriting.

Two tribute albums, four retrospective box sets...that says quite a bit. Heck, he deserves to be in just for his gorgeous snub to Playboy resulting in two 1,000 Years of Popular Music tours for musical integrity alone. And he's still releasing fresh, tasty produce.

Bob Mould was quoted advising people to take a great guitarist to see Thompson and then, about three songs in, asking what is going on here? He says the guitarist friend will say he wants to leave because he/she is so embarrassed after contrasting his/her ability with Thompson's. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6cI8P4zX-w Check out the finger-tapping around 3:45 (toward end of vid)

A legend among his peers. Musical peers, that is...not Wenner.

What about him?

Richard Thompson should be in before Joan Jett and Green Day, for crying out loud. Joan fucking Jett? Wha?

Lou was already in as a member of Velvet Underground, so it's not like he was never honored until now.

I agree with others who have said Joan Jett is a ridiculous choice. A lot of her hit songs were covers. Suzi Quatro was Joan's inspiration and way more talented in my opinion but I don't ever expect to see her in there.

Does this mean that I'll have to stop saying that Green Day doesn't belong in the RRHoF?

Not relevant. Lou's solo career was SO MUCH more noteworthy than Joan Jett or the derivative Buzzcocks-cover band known as Green Day.

So...big Joan Jett and Green Day fan, by any chance?

Seriously, you've made your point. Let it be.

I'm responding to people on a message board. There is a "let it be" rule? Those are two of the inductees. Are we not supposed to discuss inductees?

I have no issues with either per se, just their ridiculous faux equivalence in the eyes of the RRHOF.

Re: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2015 Nominees (Smiths, L. Reed, Kraftwerk, NIN, Green

I get that Joan Jett isn't really deserving (and if she were a man, there's NO WAY she'd be in -- something we'd never say about Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders for example).

I don't get the negativity for Green Day. They had a long, sucessful career in Rock and were one of the very last mainstream Rock bands. I've said previously that the very last "Classic Rock Album" ever made was American Idiot, and I stand by that. There are still great rock albums and amazing music being made, but if we're talking about albums that are considered classic of the genre and iconic, that's the last one right there.

Green Day in and The Smiths and Kraftwerk not?

That's just a different musical universe than the one I inhabit.

Of course we're supposed to discuss it, but three posts within a few of each other?

Did Joan Jett shove an apple up your ass while Green Day watched and laughed? It just seems so personal with you!

No, Richard Thompson is Britain's Roger McGuinn.

There's only one Dylan, sorry.

It was a cherry bomb.

I'm not too surprised by Green Day getting in. I'm not a fan but I realize they've been liked. Although I didn't think they'd get in on the first ballot.

I don't know. Because they are only 20 years old and didn't really contribute anything substantial or original to the rock universe? Their music is like a tribute show to punk/power pop bands that came WAY before them. Sure, perhaps Green Day should get in in another 10-20 years but now? It's just an appeal to younger people that were born after the whole punk thing already happened and was over.

Apple? No, but that might be fun. She still looks decent. Who else do you want me to talk about? Lou Reed and Ringo are both deserving and don't deserve debate.

Live & Dangerous is one of THE seminal live rock albums. The aforementioned Jailbreak opening, the Cowboy lead-in into Boys, the live version of Rosalie that SMOKES that studio version, the righteous groove of Dancing in the Moonlight.... so much to love on that LP. I think I just wet 'em...

Green Day most likely got the inclusion as to sell tickets to the ceremony. They're the only "big ticket" name on the bill.

Thin Lizzy, the 3rd best band out of Scotland.

Wait, so a multi-platinum superstar US rock band who have released seven platinum albums in the US (including three which sold more than 5 million copies) and winners of 5 Grammys (and 19 nominations) gets inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame before a semi-obscure German electronic band who have had one album go Gold in the UK and two in France? THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!!!!!!!!

I imagine that has a lot to do with it.

I'm not much of a Green Day fan beyond Insomniac, which I love. I don't have a problem with them getting in, but I think there were others on the ballot who should have gotten in first. I imagine this is their first year eligible and they are not "first-ballot HOFers".

The Smiths are German?

(I think Kraftwerk pretty much invented a genre and their work can be found in many popular artists today.)
