Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2015 Nominees (Smiths, L. Reed, Kraftwerk, NIN, Green Day)

from Pitchfork:

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2015 nominees announced

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced nominees for the 2015 induction, including Green Day, Kraftwerk, N.W.A., Nine Inch Nails, Lou Reed, The Smiths, and others. (Lou Reed is already a Rock Hall member as part of the Velvet Underground.) Check out the list below.

Nominees for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2015 Induction:

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band
Chic
Green Day
Joan Jett & the Blackhearts
Kraftwerk
The Marvellettes
N.W.A.
Nine Inch Nails
Lou Reed
The Smiths
The Spinners
Sting
Stevie Ray Vaughan

In order to be eligible for induction, artists need to have released their first single or album 25 years ago (no later than 1989). Fans can cast their vote over at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's website, or via RollingStone or USA Today. The top five artists selected by the public will make up a "fans' ballot" that will be tallied with other votes from an international voting body. Inductees will be announced in December.

Last year, Nirvana, Peter Gabriel, Kiss, Hall and Oates, Cat Stevens, Linda Ronstadt, and Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band were inducted.

Can we still bitch and moan now that Kiss are in?

Now that Kiss and Rush are in, I think Deep Purple is next one that people will bang on about.

For me, it is The Cure. How the hell are they not in there?

Have been good enough to sell out arenas for decades but Chic gets a nod?

What a boring list. They *really* want Joan Jett & The Blackhearts in there, although quite frankly why? One huge hit (a cover), a smaller hit (a cover), and that's about it. It's not like their work was massively acclaimed.

Smiths, SRV, Green Day, NWA, Sting, Kraftwerk all deserve inclusion. Reed is a *LOCK*.

Mine would be: War, Reed, Smiths.

I do like: Spinners, NIN, Chic, N.W.A., Joan and SRV but enough.

Kraftwerk is weird as I had friends that really liked them but I just did not get it back then. Maybe they are bigger than I really know.

Green Day will probably go in but not my thing.

Don't forget Motorhead. You'd think they'd want to do it while Lemmy is still alive, because boy what an induction speech that would be.

Also, someone made a good point on YouTube: Suzi Quatro. She was a primary influence on Joan, after all, and is still going strong in Europe, where they don't trash an artist after 5 years because they are old hat.

Geez that's the best list of snubbed bands you could come up with?

Thin Lizzy needs to be there a dozen times over Joan Jett or Sting, but I'm not making a federal case out of anything. The RRHoF is fundamentally meaningless and has no authority over music whatsoever, unless you're a Jan Wenner or an member of his arrogant, overweight inner circle-jerk.

Agree, 100%!

My list (of those choices)

Green Day
N.W.A.
Lou Reed
The Smiths
Stevie Ray Vaughn

Personally, I'm very fond of Sting's 80s and 90s output, but like George Harrison before him, it's kind of hard to get that excited to induct an artist for his solo work when you know he's already been inducted for his best stuff.

You have got to be kidding me. No Deep Purple? Not even nominated?

Pathetic.

Here's my nominee list...

Deep Purple
Iron Maiden
SRV
Thin Lizzy
UFO
The Cure (hate 'em, but they deserve to be in)
The Smiths (see above)

I do have to say, I must have missed the huge influence of Thin Lizzy completely. I certainly knew they did "The Boys are Back in Town" and think it's a great song, but I figured there must be more stuff from them since a one-hit wonder wouldn't get people this upset. Checking their albums and songs online, I might have heard "Jailbreak" once and I do recognize "Dancing in the Moonlight", but that's about it. Were they a big thing in the 70s because I sure don't remember it.

They were much bigger in Europe (especially the UK) than they ever were in America, where they were primarily known for "Boys" and, to a lesser extent, "Jailbreak". It's a shame, because they have a amazing hard rock discography.

I'd check out the albums "Black Rose" and "Vagabonds of the Western World" for two distinct (but quite awesome) eras of the band. And the "Jailbreak" album alone is IMO a 70s rock classic from start to finish.

As far as influence, they pioneered the twin-lead-guitar sound that was emulated by many in the hard rock/metal scene.

Beside the obvious like Deep Purple, The Damned, Cheap Trick, Steppenwolf, ELP, Jethro Tull and Uriah Heep, I think it is time for The New York Dolls to get in.
