Still waiting on my U-turn turntable...can't wait to be able to join in on the conversation. Been picking up some albums in the meantime. Just found out Empire of the Sun's most recent album is now on vinyl, will be scooping that up soon.

Just won an auction on the MFSL version of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars. Less than $50, which I consider to be a good deal for that particular issue.

The recent re-lease of Ziggy on vinyl has the 5.1 SACD mix included. Or is it DVD-Audio? Can't recall.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I have heard the SACD mix before. The one I just bought is from 1981, IIRC.

Any RSD purchases?

I picked up the U2 10" Ordinary Love, Jack Johnson Live at Third Man Records and the Nirvana 180g In Utero.

JR.com has all vinyl at 30% off for today only.

I picked up the Miles Davis mono releases, Doors, which all sound stunning. Haven't yet listened to In Utero, the Duran Duran, U2 or John Denver and the muppets. Also got Linus and Lucy just for fun. Already have the full album. Couldn't find grinch so I ordered it from Amazon last night with some accumulated cc points.

Stone Temple Pilot's Tiny Music is coming out December 16th on limited edition light blue vinyl. I remember liking this album when it came out, but I probably haven't listened to it in 15 years. I'll be picking it up though.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

RSD was pretty lame. It's a total cash grab. I would have loved to have the Billy Bragg and Wilco albums but at $39 a piece, they can kiss my ass. The Flaming Lips EP was $20. The X box set was $100. I wanted the Zabriskie Point soundtrack - $30. Nope.

I bought Dawes Stripped Down at Grimeys and the Bob Dylan 3 LP "Side Tracks" just because I already was there and wanted to buy something.

On a better note, I got the first Tubeway Army LP for $15 while I was there. (and another copy of Let It Be for $2.)

I'm a big STP fan, and Tiny Music is right up there with Purple, in my book.

For the 80s synth/Carpenter/soundtrack fans, I recently picked up these - both albums can be streamed on bandcamp as well.

I just ordered Slasher Dave's album the other day. Killer stuff. I love his work in Acid Witch, too.

Got my Mondo Halloween vinyls in the mail - one black, one orange. Stoked!

You know, at this point I usually seek out the reissues and not the originals. I buy records to LISTEN to, not as an investment. As long as the cover art and song content is the same, I'm happy.

Although one exception I'll make on that is London Calling by The Clash. The reissues all list Train in Vain at the end of side 4. That just doesn't seem right. It should always be "hidden".

CRM114 12-04-13 01:11 PM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I buy originals that are pristine. :)

I don't buy anything as an investment. I do get joy out of knowing that my copy of Magical Mystery Tour actually was listened to in 1967. I love that someone probably cleaned weed in 1966 in my copy of Blonde on Blonde.

And for the most part, the originals are cheaper than the reissues. I bought two original Apple releases of Let it Be for less than half of what a reissue costs.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I see both sides of buying reissues vs original. I've bought more reissues than anything else I guess, but I get such a kick buying a new record. It just doesn't seem like something I should be able to do after not really seeing them in stores since 1990 or so. I peruse eBay for records that haven't been reissued more often than not. I'm also shying away from the whole "this pressing is better than this other pressing" thing for originals. I could drive myself crazy trying to keep up with it all. But yeah I don't have any illusions. I know the originals sound better 99% of the time.

Supermallet 12-04-13 11:35 PM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I go for the originals when I can, due to not knowing what source the reissues are coming from most of the time. There are some exceptions, of course. I'd never bother with an original issue of Raw Power, because the Iggy mix blows the Bowie mix out of the water. Also, I feel pretty confident buying the MoFi version of any given record instead of the original, especially if the MoFi is cheaper.

Of course, unless you're checking catalog numbers in the store, what looks like an original issue may end up being a reissue from a few years later, so you do take a chance.
