The VINYL Thread!

Re: The VINYL Thread!
I've had this Sharp calculator since I was a kid.

It's chunky and takes AAA batteries, and the thing still runs despite being almost fifty years old. The vinyl case fell apart.
The Texas Instruments scientific calculators I used in high school would quit working after about a year. The Casio graphing calculator I had in college also didn't outlast my college years. But this thing I had since I was five or six years old still runs like new.

I recently acquired a HP-45 that I used the DeoxIT on and it works great now. I’ve been bringing old calculators and watches back to life lately and I guess it goes along with the nostalgia of re-appreciating old vinyl, which still amazes me with the lasting quality of it. Maybe it’s worth starting a thread in Tech Talk about the electronic devices.

(Moving to Calculator Talk...)
My high school calculator. I can't believe it still runs off a battery the age of which I couldn't even guess. It's a rebranded Casio FX-3600P.
I 'cleverly' inverted the mode button so if someone stole it, I'd be able to identify it as my own.

Ok, opposite end of the spectrum on the Cars' Heartbeat City Live RSD release; for as much as XTC's was a piece of shit, this thing is a piece of work. It's almost too clean a recording, if that makes sense. At times it sounds like a studio Cars record, but with crowd noise in between songs.
The version of Candy O is quite different than the track on the record of the same name, so that's something.
Definitely a record all you "I don't usually like live albums" folk would like, if it wasn't fetching ridiculous prices on the used market.

Reddit question I thought I’d ask here
Which album do you own the most copies of?
I try and avoid this so mine is The White Album at just 2 copies. Have a copy of a pressing from the last 10 years and then an original US numbered copy I picked up in that huge purchase of 14 boxes of vinyls I posted pictures of years ago. Really only listen to the new copy but the numbered one is one of my prized possessions.

Vinyl only...
I would really have to think about that... there are some albums that I have original pressings of, new pressings (post-Y2K), and deluxe boxed sets. Definitely have at least three copies of the first four Metallica albums in those formats: Originals from the 1980s, Walmart Exclusive colored vinyl, Deluxe boxed sets.
Also Appetite for Destruction... I have the Columbia House release, an original pressing with the uncensored cover art, and the boxed set.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
The only vinyl album that I've owned more than two copies of would be Candy-O by The Cars. I've had the original release since it came out in '79 but it's been played a lot over the years so I decided to go for an upgrade back in 2023. I ordered the Rhino-Elektra expanded edition but was sent the clear vinyl non-expanded version instead. Figured I'd try it anyway. Like a lot of clear or colored vinyl albums, the sound quality left a bit to be desired so I replaced that with the MoFi edition, which is my go-to now ... even if the drums are featured a little too prominently in the mix. If I ever find the right combination of mix and audio quality, I'll likely buy it for a fourth time.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
I had my original Canadian pressing and found an excellent condition early Japanese pressing. Then I also bought two different remastered versions.
For the CDs, I have two different Columbia pressings as well as a UK Harvest pressing. It's been a while, but I think they all sound very good. At one point, I bought a remaster from a local used shop. It was disappointing. I don't see it, so I've either misplaced it or I may even have returned it. I only ended up with it because someone had put it in an original case. When I opened it up, I saw the colour artwork on the CD that clued me into it being the remaster.

Appreciate the love the Wall is getting. Thats one where I’d buy an original pressing if I saw one at a reasonable price. Although I only have one newer vinyl copy of the original album i have the immersion box set which has a cd copy of the album and is there anybody out there. Also have vinyl copies of Waters’ live version from the 21st century tour, a death metal cover of the whole album, a weird prog rock ish / psycho cover of the album and one other that i’m spacing on what it is. Out of town without access to my records or laptop with my login saved for discogs.
Big fan. Watch every interpretation I come across including a high school rendition on youtube.

The Petty estate strikes again. Exclusive RSD release of a live album with 3K copies. Sells out for the most part on the day of release, shoots to over 100 a copy, and then a week later, they drop a second Tom Petty website exclusive, slightly different spatter for fans. Glad I did not pay extra for a copy as I was initially shut out.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
Here's one that I have seven copies of...

I don't really count it as multiple copies, though, because it's one I kept rebuying in order to put together an edition in decent condition.
This was a staple in the dollar bins of records at flea markets in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I picked up a copy based on the Frank Frazetta cover alone (before I really even knew he was), and loved the album -- the whole thing is just late 1970s as fuck. But the the record was a bit scratchy and there was some bad ring wear on the jacket. Ended up buying each copy I found that was in better condition, then found that it also had a graphic sleeve, so I had to grab those up, too.
Eventually, I took the best jacket, the best LP, and best graphic sleeve and made a master copy for my collection. I don't think this have been reissued on vinyl, at least domestically. My other copies are in storage with my other dollar bin junk from my flea market days. Bunch of old, scratchy Blur Oyster Cult and Black Sabbath albums, "Cat Scratch Fever," and stuff like that I either bought to sample or replaced with better copies.

Other than that, there are quite a few titles that I've either upgraded or grabbed a variant I was interested in, or thought something might be a rarity - but those are typically limited to 2 copies total.

The Dickies - Stukas Over Disneyland
Original release
Re-release with three extra songs
French release with alternate cover art
I think that's my "most copies" entry
I also might have three copies of Rumours, in attempts to get the best sounding 70s era pressing (I.E., didn't want a remastered re-release)

If we are talking vinyl only, I have a bunch where I own two copies of, but I can't think of any where I own three or more versions.
Over multiple formats, I have one album on four different formats, Ace Frehley's 1978 solo album on vinyl, cassette, CD and yes, 8-Track!

I had:
White vinyl version from late 70's
Black Capitol label vinyl from late 70's because white was warped
The original CD release in a double jewel case
I currently have:
a late 60's numbered mono vinyl form the UK (it as only released in stereo in the US)
The 2009 remaster CD
A late 90's vinyl packaging replica on CD
The 2018 remix CD box set with book & 5.1 mix
And just today I had to talk myself down from buying the 2018 mix vinyl set at my local record store. The $150 price tag helped keep it out of my hands this time. It's really not even one of my favorite Beatles albums, but I just keep buying it for some reason.

For Vinyl, it would be Wildflowers, where I have at least 3 versions of the album on vinyl ( and a cassette, CD, and MP3) If we are talking all formats, it would be Tom Petty's Damn the Torpedos, where I have copies signed by Mike Campbell in Vinyl, CD, Cassette, 8-track, and Blu-ray, I have been to a number of meet and greet events before shows and decided to have fun with it.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
So one of my sisters and I spent the weekend going through my dad's house, deciding what to keep and what to leave for the estate sale. (My dad is alive, but in poor health and has moved in with me, so he is going to sell his house) We came across a box of old records in the garage, that probably haven't been touched since the 80s. Maybe 15-20 albums. My parents were part of the 'silent generation' so most of it is stuff they would have listened to when they were young, though they never had a big vinyl collection. A couple of Elvis records, Chet Atkins, Jim Reeves, Jim Nabors (!), Roger Miller, Neil Diamond, etc. And some compilation albums (Christmas, classical, etc.). I haven't pulled most of them from their sleeves to see their condition. Of the few I did look at, a couple looked to be in great condition and a couple were pretty scratched. There were even a few 78s in the box, no sleeves and the surfaces are in very rough shape--probably not playable. I was surprised by how hefty they feel.
I went ahead and brought the lot of them home with me. I'll give them each a listen at least once and decide what I want to keep and see if my local record store or Half-Price Books will buy any of the rest. I'll take some pics and post them here as I go through them.
Growing up and knowing him mostly as Gomer Pyle, it was always strange to see him singing, in commercials or on talk shows. I don't remember ever listening to this album when I was younger. This'll probably end up being sold.
