The VINYL Thread!

I knew there was trouble in paradise but didn't have all the details. Fascinating read. I think the only Mofi's I have are the Beatles and Stones box sets from the early 80s.

They didn't start implementing their DSD digital step till around 2015, and even then it was just some titles, then little by little, it became almost every title since then.

Yeah, I didn't ask, but I'm curious too. The "prize" of the collection is Black Flag's first single, he's asking $2500 for it. But he said he doesn't even expect to sell it, he just likes having it displayed on the wall. Which makes me realize he certainly paid a lot less for it if he's willing to let it sit unsold on the wall display.

Re: The VINYL Thread!
White Stripes Elephant XX was announced recently. Unlike the other 20th anniversary box sets this won’t have any live performances or demos (outside of a single with multiple versions of hypnotize). Jack White remixed the album in mono. Very disappointed as I have two of the three already released XX boxes and planned to get them all but unlikely to now as mono means very little to me. Posting here mostly to inform others as i know there are a lot who value mono recordings and it is their signature album. You can sign up through the third man records page to get a copy for $75 through the end of the month.
If there happens to be anyone who gets it but doesn’t care about the single i’d pay a good amount for it….

I went ahead and ordered this, mostly because I'm a sucker, but also, I think these discography sets won't be around much longer, as vinyl costs increase, and deluxe sets will focus more and more on single-album deluxe-sets rather then an all-encompassing set like this.
Either way, I'm really looking forward to getting it, as I've heard nothing but great things about the previous pressing....

Re: The VINYL Thread!
Does anyone have a suggestion for a starter record player with built in speakers? I want to dip my toes into vinyl, but don't want to spend a ton out of the gate. Looking at this one for $170:
I was excited to see a lot of these record players have bluetooth, so I figured you could just stream the sound to a nice pair of bluetooth speakers. But that's not the case, the bluetooth is only to stream FROM your phone or other device, it isn't an output

Oh shit! For a while, I was debating which Miles Davis album that features John McLaughlin I should get - I guess I'll get them all! (or most)

Yeah, that's why I went to an all-analog setup, with a turntable and receiver made while Jimmy Carter was still president. It sounds absolutely glorious.
As for pops, that's part and parcel of listening to vinyl. Even new records you first take out of the shrink wrap. Vinyl records just love to maintain static electricity. The static attracts microscopic particles in the air, and voila, your record will pop in spots. You can minimize with static brushes and guns, microfiber cloths, but they'll still find a way onto your records. But if you didn't want that, you wouldn't be listening to vinyl in the first place.

Usually, just playing a record can "clean" it of some "pop" surface noise, as the needle picks up the crud in the grooves better than a brush could.

Here's my starter collection:
Mostly just listen to Post Rock these days ... those Godspeed You! Black Emperor gatefolds are really beautiful... such high quality cardboard, feels really weighty in my hand. Sounds amazing too

Re: The VINYL Thread!
I've picked up a couple more King Biscuit Flower Hour records, bringing my total to 7:
Utopia
The Romantics/Nik Heyward
Los Lobos/Dwight Twilley
Graham Parker/The Bongos
Jason and the Scorchers/Dave Edmunds
The Tubes
Billy Squier
One interesting bit is Los Lobos opening up with Ritchie Valens' C'mon Let's Go, only the concert was from like '82 or '83, a good 4 years before they'd be the band Lou Diamond Philips mimed to in La Bamba.
Still waiting on the last two to arrive, and I'm really excited about the Tubes' outing; it's almost exclusively songs from The Completion Backward Principle (by far my favorite album of theirs) so it's deep cuts, not just Talk to Ya Later. Only two older songs are Mondo Bondage and White Punks on Dope, but I ain't complainin' bout those being on there.
That's what I like about these KBFH records (and why I liked the program back in the day), they're from when bands were touring those records and played large selections of songs from them. Almost any official "live" album by a band will pretty much be just the hits.

I use an IKEA rack. I forget the product name, but it's very sturdy.
Of course, this is not useful to you if you're looking for a rack where you see the covers and can flip through them. I store mine with the spine facing out.

Do you guys have a "go-to" for buying vinyl online? Amazon doesn't seem to have a great selection. I wish we had a nice record store in palm springs, the only one we have is tiny, and was mostly old, used Elvis LPs

Re: The VINYL Thread!
It's been a while but the last vinyl records I bought were from Amazon. It was Ghost's "Impera," Metric's "Formentera", and the new reissue of Kiss's "Creatures of the Night." What's going on now is that most artists have exclusives or variants of the vinyl on their own websites/merchandise sites that compete with the big retailers. By that same token, retailers have "retail exclusives" and whatnot.
