Re: The all things METALLICA thread!
Fast forward to 2009, and Steve Thompson was on hand for Metallica’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. “They flew us out and I’m sitting with Lars,” Thompson recalled. “He goes, ‘Hey, what happened to the bass in … Justice?’ He actually asked me that. I wanted to cold cock him right there. It was a shame because I’m the one getting the s– for the lack of bass.”
I'm sure Lars was joking you fucking idiot.

Re: The all things METALLICA thread!
Around 20 years ago, I went to a Metallica show where they faked a stage fire & had someone in the crew run across the stage on fire. Afterwards, Hetfield made an announcement how they wouldn't want to let the fans down and they would continue to play which they did, but the sound was all screwed up. At the time, I thought this was real until I spoke to a friend who also went to a show on a different night & told me they pulled the same exact stunt. This was around 1996.
I was reading comments on some of their recent shows (forget where) where people are saying they are still doing this nonsense?? Is this true?

They still do it but only at arenas. It's become part of the show and of all the reviews I have read about shows, you're the first person to comment on it like that.

Comment on it like what? Like it's a negative thing? They fake a stage fire, they fake someone being set on fire, then they continue the show with worse sounding equipment acting like the fans should be grateful they continued to play. Not to mention they do this so often everyone knows about it and Metallica themselves know the audience knows...so what's the point? It's stupid.

Are they doing it outside of their "retrospective" tours? The ones with the sweet stage setup? Or is still happening at all of the arena shows?

I had no idea they were still doing it. It's been nearly 20 years. I would hope that they only do it in cities that have never seen it before.

oh boy
... they brought it back for includement for THROUGH THE NEVER. Remember they brought out the 3D stage with props from all tours and instead of having Cum & Blood and Piss & Urine thrown at fans they instead had the pyro stunt for the LOAD/RELOAd tour.

GELSENKIRCHEN, GERMANY
May 29, 2015
Rock im Revier @ Veltins Arena
MAIN SET
1. Fuel
2. For Whom the Bell Tolls
3. Metal Militia
4. King Nothing
5. Disposable Heroes

17. Nothing Else Matters
18. Enter Sandman
This was the third time that we have played a show in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. We last visited Gelsenkirchen on July 2, 2011 during a tour with The Big 4 and first played here on the Madly in Anger With the World tour in 2004. Germany has always been great to us by letting us visit 110 times since 1984.
Fuel opened the show for only the second time over the course of our career followed by Bellz. Its the first time that those two songs have been paired up to open the show.
Metal Militia appeared in the third slot of the set. This was only the 10th time that weve played the deep cut from Kill Em All since 2004. We last played it two years ago when we performed a secret set as dehaan at Orion Music + More in Detroit. Coincidentally, we played the song in Gelsenkirchen on June 10, 2004.
King Nothing hadnt been performed in Germany since the May 17, 2009 show in Cologne and, despite being performed approximately 336 times, has only been performed live eight times over the last ten years. Disposable Heroes also hasnt been performed live in Germany in six years. It last appeared in a Germany setlist on May 16, 2009 in Oberhausen.
Following Disposable, we pulled out a true rarity by performing The Unforgiven II for the first time at a live gig. We had played the song once before at the Billboard Music Awards on December 8, 1997, but the song never found its way into our live set until now! Cyanide, Lords of Summer and Sad But True followed.
We werent done with the rarities yet! We dusted off The Frayed Ends of Sanity for only the second time since it was released in 1988! We debuted Frayed in Helsinki last year during the Metallica By Request tour and had such a good time with it, we thought wed play it again here in Germany.
After playing a couple classics (One and Master of Puppets), we played Damage, Inc. which, like King and Disposable, hadnt been played in Germany since 2009. Damage hadnt appeared in one of our sets since we played Melbourne, Australia on March 1, 2013.
We closed out the main set with Fade to Black and Seek and Destroy. Yes! You heard correctly! Seek and Destroy did not close the show! Can you believe it? We kicked off the encore with Creeping Death, then played Nothing Else Matters before closing with Enter Sandman. We havent closed with Sandman much over the last 10 years the Stones show in 2005, Live Earth in 2007 and the Hall of Fame Anniversary show in 2009 are a few times off the top of our head.
We performed 18 songs off of eight albums: Kill Em All (2), Ride the Lightning (3), Master of Puppets (3), And Justice for All (3), Metallica (3), Load (1), Reload (2), Death Magnetic (1), Non-Album Tracks (1)

Met's entire catalog on iTunes is now "Mastered for iTunes"

I'm noticing differences in the older albums too particularly the first four, thank you iTunes!
just bit the bullet and bought it (no PMs please, iTunes encoding and such). And it was worth every cent. This is what the album should have sounded like on the CD in 2008. Dry, in your face, but not with the gain kicked up by 6dB.
And just for the record, in case anyone is confused, the album is still compressed as hell, like most music is these days. But there's no layer of ugly distortion because the levels are too high.
yeah I only bought DM and it is 100% worth it. The album sounds brand new to me. Don't expect it to sound like a total remix, but everything is much clearer. There's a lot more double bass work Lars does that I couldn't pick up on as well on the original, and Rob's bass is the real shiner.
I half suspect that the new MFiT version is not just a remaster, but a full top to bottom remix. As others have said, the bass is so much more prominent in this new version, as is Lars' kick drums. Those are things you don't get from just adjusting EQ.
OK so I just checked out some of the previews on iTunes
Garage Inc. sounds much better
Clipping isn't perfectly fixed in DM, but I can notice double bass way easier
AJFA sounds crisper
Guitars in MoP sound slightly muddier for some reason
I think bass is slightly enhanced in Load (it was everywhere in the Ain't My Bitch preview)
