Seen them live both in the clubs and in the arenas. Fun live band.

I just looked it up.. It was probably the tour with their "warning" album

I've seen them live and they rocked! I saw them in 2002 on the Pop Disaster Tour with Blink 182. They were much, much better than Blink.

Re: Where should Green Day be ranked amongst all-time great bands?

I've been a Green Day fan since I heard the music coming out of my sister's room back in the summer of 93. Kerplunk changed my musically ways. And although they have changed their musical styles with age, the band is still relevant and that is quite a feat. Their live act is fantastic. Even with all the new music(American Idiot/21st Century Breakdown) that they jam into their concerts, they pay homage to their old school fans. When I saw them this summer they went all out nailing a song from each album including 1039 and Kerplunk. Add that to the awesome melodies that they rip through (including songs as Back in Black/Hey Jude/Can get no Satisfaction/We are the World/Iron Man/Master of Puppets) and it was quite a fantastic show even with me not having much of a dying urge to see the show.

Whether they rank on "your" list of top 50 or top 10000000, they deserve enough recognition to be top 200 in terms of influential acts. Whatever category you consider Green Day(punk/pop/pop punk), you can't take away the fact that without them a good majority of bands would not have been recognized the way they have been if GD didn't hit it with Dookie.

See, all the vitriol people are slinging at Green Day really should be aimed at Blink 182. I can't stand those guys.

2002, huh? That was a decent show, I can't believe it's been that long.

Yep. Have you seen the show with the lead singer on Fuse? His "talents" as a TV host are almost as bad as his "talents" as a rock musician.

Yep, it was the summer after I graduated high school. Green Day was great, Blink sucked, but then again I've never been a big fan of Blink.

Re: Where should Green Day be ranked amongst all-time great bands?

I can't really say if Green Day ever referred to themselves as strictly a punk band only or not because I don't know but I have heard many people refer to them as that and I think they're far from it. From a personal stand point; I've never liked them.

Pretty sure I started a thread for the Anti Nowhere League before and these guys are what I think of when I hear the word "punk" yeah they were laughed at when first hitting the scene but after a bit, I'm pretty sure everyone did a full 360 with them - this will sound familiar to some of you metallica fans because they frequently cover this tune at their shows (well, they use, not sure if they still do):

I can't stand either and both inspired a wave of awful bands even worse than themselves. Blink 182 created the whiny vocal style that lots of bands are using to this day.

The one thing I give Green Day credit for that I can't say about bands like Blink-182 is that at least they stole their sound from decent bands like the Clash, The Who and Husker Du, THe Buzzcocks and The Ramones. So they at least did their homework. Blink 182 seems to have been influenced by well Green Day.

I like Blinks "hits". Their videos are fun as well. That's about the extent of it for me.

Um yeah, GD would not make the list of top 500 bands. And I generally appreciate their music (however derivative it may be).

Green Day are boring, untalented and huge song thieves. I'd put them at #4 in my most hated and overrated of bands list.

What songs did they steal? I've never heard that accusation before.

There are a lot of bands that could be quite decent if they didn't sing this way. Completely annoying.

I did listen to American Idiot today, for the first time in at least a year. I liked it more than I remember, but it didn't change how I feel about them overall.

Not sure but Blvd of Broken Dreams sure brings to mind Wonderwall.

They've been sued a few times I believe as well.

read the thread from when American Idiot came out. They ripped off riffs from everyone from Johnny Cash to Cheap Trick.

Green Day is a pop band. They're pretty good, but I'm not a big fan. If I were being objective, I'd say Top 50 or 100 maybe, Top 500 definitely.

Subjectively? I doubt they would make my Top 1000.
