Where should Green Day be ranked amongst all-time great bands?

Since they are my favorite band, I am biased and would put them at number 1. But I am curious as to where general music fans see them. Top 5? Top 10? Top 20? Top 50? Top 100?

I can add a poll if people would like.

If I personally had to make a list of 100 great bands, Green Day would not make the list.

I like several of their songs, but they wouldn't crack my top 100.

Probably not in a overall top 100 list, but maybe somewhere in a subgenre list.

Re: Where should Green Day be ranked amongst all-time great bands?

They didn't make this list
http://www.avrev.com/top-100-bands-o...ands/index.php

or this one
http://rateyourmusic.com/list/jairc0...ory_rock_bands

Made it on this (little different style list)
http://www.buzzle.com/articles/best-rock-bands.html

They would probably be in my top 100 or 50...

Re: Where should Green Day be ranked amongst all-time great bands?

wow, that AVrev top 100 poll is a head-scratcher. The Bee-Gees, Audioslave, and the Dixie Chicks ahead of R.E.M. and the Kinks? who came up with that? anyway, i would put Green Day in my top 50 favorite bands list, definitely. Not sure if I would include them in a list of the 50 most important bands of all time, but I still really enjoy their music.

I thought they peaked with Insomniac, and have been pretty weak since then, so they probably wouldn't make my top 100.

[punk snob]You know how on Beavis and Butthead, there was that annoying shit with the Winger shirt? If the show had been about punks instead of metal-heads, that kid would've been in a Green Day shirt.[/punk snob]

I'd put them in the top 100. They'd be pretty low in the list, but 100 is a lot of bands. They've been remarkably consistent, every album has a few greats songs on it. They're a terrific live band and they're all great musicians, especially Tre. Dookie's a great pop-punk album. Insomniac has some terrific tracks. Warning is hugely underrated, IMO. My favorite track by them is probably "Uptight" off of Nimrod.

Re: Where should Green Day be ranked amongst all-time great bands?

I truthfully do not have any interest in their stuff post-Insomniac.

I might place them on a list of artists I like to listen to, but I think they would fall near the end of the list.

While I enjoy American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, they definitely made better music in their earlier years, although that is strictly personal preference.

And I agree with the poster who said Warning is underrated, it is my 2nd favorite album of theirs after Dookie.

Re: Where should Green Day be ranked amongst all-time great bands?

They'd be in my top 50 but close to the bottom.

Love everything up until their last album. I thought 21st Century Breakdown was embarrasing. It's like they took everything people criticized American Idiot for (over produced, overly ambitious, crappy emo punk, etc) and amped it up to 11 for 21st Century Breakdown.

I really wish the Foxboro Hottubs album had been an official Green Day release. One album (21CB) usually wouldn't have such a negative impact on my overall view of a band but the progression from American Idiot (which I love) to 21st Century Breakdown to the fookin musical doesn't give me much hope for the future.

Re: Where should Green Day be ranked amongst all-time great bands?

I've never cared for them much, and I'm surprised (but impressed) that they've been able to maintain their relevance all this time while so many other bands fell by the wayside. In 1994, I would have lost the bet as to whether they'd be popular 10, 15 years down the line.

Re: Where should Green Day be ranked amongst all-time great bands?

I think Green Day is taking an undeserved licking here. I quite like them. And yes, I'd say they've remained relevant to the music scene all this time, while also being popular. That being said, their early stuff isn't as good as Stiff Little Fingers (who also wouldn't make my top 100) while their later stuff isn't as good as The Jam (who would easily make my top 20), so I wouldn't call them an all-time great. But they're definitely not deserving of the "look down my nose at them" act a lot of people here are giving them.

They wouldn't make my top 100, but if you had asked me 15 years ago they wouldn't have cracked my top 500 so they've definitely made some progress... I'm just not really a fan.

I don't mean to be a threadcrapper, and I'm admittedly not that familiar with their whole catalog--but for the most part I share Lemmy's opinion. From the songs I've heard, their songs sound like dull, derivative, and watered down imitations of songs from The Jam or the The Clash. "Basket Case" seems a bit weak compared to "Standards", IMO--although it could simply be a case of me being an old coot :

At least Green Day's early songs were fast and fun. That sounded like a dirge compared to Basketcase. And just horribly dated. The Ramones or Husker Du are a better comparison.

That not the best song by The Jam, but pretty much all of their output from All Mod Cons through The Gift is unbeatable.
