I have no hate for Green Day, but they wouldn't be in my top 10,000. Actually you could probably even add a zero or two to the end of that number.

Let's not get ridiculous. Even knowing of them puts them in anyone's top hundred thousand.
I would say top 500. Honestly, their albums don't have much replay value for me past Insomniac. That is my favorite of their records. I liked AI but lost it and never bothered to replace it. I bought their newest and didn't care for it at all for some reason.

I would rather listen to Green Day than watch hardcore gay porn. But if I had to, I'd prefer to do both simultaneously.

You know what, I've always and will always love that song. I remember hearing it the day Nimrod was released and thinking "this is really strange for a Green Day song", yet I loved it then and I love it now. It is a timeless ballad to me. I do wish that Green Day would have left the acoustic ballad side of them alone afterwards, however, as Wake Me Up When September Ends ranks as one of my least favorite songs of theirs. But to be fair, I do enjoy 21 Guns.

Re: Where should Green Day be ranked amongst all-time great bands?
In college I had a roommate who would play only Jimmy Buffett, Hank Williams, Counting Crows and Green Day's Dookie. I hated Green Day. Couldn't stand them. Would never like them.
Then as the years went by, I bought and found I could appreciate American Idiot. It's not close to being one of my favorite albums, but I get the appeal and see why others might really like it. I've also gotten International Superhits, their best of CD, and now have a select group songs I like off of there.
They're nowhere close to my top 100 bands, but I've grown to think they might be ok in small doses.

everybody hating on them, I'd really like to know what bands you consider great (aside from the obvious, beatles, zeppelin, pink floyd, rolling stones, etc...)

Of course, those are all my personal preferences and I personally wouldn't get too bent out of shape if someone online said they'd never place They Might Be Giants in their top 500 list of best bands.

See, the problem is there's over a hundred obviously great bands just like the ones you listed who are better than Green Day. Which easily would drive them from any top 100 list. And this coming from someone who have been listening to them since Dookie, including the side projects.

Kerplunk and Insomniac are my favourite albums. I owned all of the proper albums excluding the newest one (Greatest Hits and B-sides albums don't count as "proper" IMO). They MIGHT be in my top 100, but only because I can't name 100 bands off the top of my head. They probably rank somewhere below Nirvana, but (way) above Radiohead.

I started out hating them when they hit with Basket Case. Then they started to grow on me. Then they became too pretentious and I was back to hating them.
Now, I like some random songs from pre-Dookie, Dookie, and Insomniac but that's about it.

Bieber's better than Radiohead, man. It's not a tough accomplishment.
edit: okay, I take back the Bieber comment. That was harsh. Everything else stands.

Re: Where should Green Day be ranked amongst all-time great bands?
Of course personal opinions will vary, not everyone has the same taste in music. I like Green Day, but I'm okay with that fact that many others don't. What I don't really like is when people seem to dismiss a band on principle alone. I think Green Day has suffered a lot of backlash because they were a huge part of the mainstreaming of punk in the early '90s. The punk scene has always been dominated by a "punker than thou" attitude, where the biggest crimes seem to be selling out and becoming popular. A band that is popular with guys on the high school football team can't possibly be considered punk. I don't really think the labels matter anyway. Is Green Day considered punk, or pop punk, or just pop? I don't care. Green Day is no Fugazi/Minutemen/Clash/whatever, but that's doesn't mean I can't listen to all of these bands and enjoy them on their own merits.
