Re: Spotify: Everyone Loves Music (or "Streaming is the Future")
Those are valid points. But basically it sounds like a service like Spotify is paying artists more in trade rather than money. The information they provide can be valuable to labels and maybe artists, but it doesn't pay for the studio bills, which is what I think CM meant when they said:
I know leading producers, engineers, mastering engineers, etc., have all had to lower their rates in response to the lowered revenues coming from recorded music. I can't fault CM if they think a streaming service will further eat into that revenue.
EDIT: Just want to clarify I am not anti-Spotify at all. I'm not big into video streaming at all, but something like Spotify definitely has its place. I'm just worried if a label like CM pulls out, how many others are to follow? Herd mentality can be a powerful thing.
The income streams to the artists are affected massively and therefore that accelerates the downward spiral, which eventually will lead to artists not being able to record music the way it should be recorded.

Very good point, and I imagine a small amount of those streaming royalties go to those people (by way of the label, of course). Recording an album that way still costs money (as it should, if your intent is to have a quality recording) and those people need to be paid, too. That's why I think physical sales are still important; the hardcore fans will buy CDs and limited edition packages. I almost put down $80 for the new Thrice set... but they wanted to charge an extra $35 to ship to Canada, so I couldn't bite the bullet on that. I'll probably still get the vinyl, though.
But, a lot of independent artists record their music using Garageband and aren't as concerned with audio quality or pressing CDs. I think those guys are going to benefit from streaming, since the cost of getting their music 'out there' is so much cheaper, albeit with lower overall profits from the recordings. That's a pretty big opportunity for people who may not have the cash to promote and distribute their music.
Which brings up the debate on whether or not labels, producers, etc. should also get a cut of merch and tour sales ("360 deals" so to speak). I don't have any real input on that.

Bandcamp could pick up some of the streaming and digital distribution, though. Unfortunately, the search feature there is terrible, there's no playlist ability, and no way to rate things.

Question about mobile (iPhone). If I sync a playlist, does it use significantly less data from my plan than if I hadn't synced it? Obviously if I put it in Offline mode, it won't use my data plan at all. I hadn't really synced any playlists, but I already got a message from AT&T that I am getting close to my 2 GB limit.

since it will download the playlist onto the iphone, yes it will use less data. it will read from the local app instead of streaming

Yeah, I know that. But When you search for "Nirvana" and go to the artist page, Bleach doesn't show up unless you happen to go to the artist page by selecting the band's name next to a Bleach song. It's like how "Dillinger Escape Plan" and "The Dillinger Escape Plan" have two different catalogs, except in this case, there's no difference between how the artist name is spelled.

So, Iced Earth wants their music on Spotify, even though their label, Century Media, pulled their entire catalog "in the artists best interest." Fun times.
On an entirely different note, if anyone of you Americans uses Paypal to pay for your Premium subscription, please send me a PM. I have a bit of a favor to ask...

Anyway to use Google Music playlists on Spotify or vice-versa? I like using both, and I hate having to duplicate playlists.

Isn't Spotify supposed to renew your premium account automatically every month once you sign up?
I just checked and I am showing I have a free account again and am no longer a premium user. I looked at the date I joined and the sub ran out today. I am afraid of signing up again immediately and then getting double charged but I am too used to Spotify now to go several days without it.

Anyone having an issue with Spotify not starting the next track on their PC? It happens after ads, and even sometimes just between tracks on my playlist. It will say cannot play track, or something to that effect, but when I click the track it will play fine. It's not every time, but enough to annoy me a little.

So I decided to splurge and signed up for the $10 a month service, so I could stream stuff to my phone at the gym. So far, I'm REALLY not liking the interface. It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Seems to be focused on playlists, but I don't want playlists. I'm an album guy. I want to listen to albums start to finish. I want to be able to mark albums and artists I like so that they are easy to get to on the phone app. Can't figure out how to do that, aside from making a playlist for every single album.

So, Spotify works on my pixi, but it doesn't work on my TouchPad. Both are running webOS, so i'm not sure why it won't work on my TP. Any ideas?

Could someone please tell me if they can get this track to play all the way through? It always stops at the 2 sec mark for me.
