All easy choices. Anyone that would pick Duran Duran over Ray Charles should never be allowed to listen to music again.

If this were some poll asking about the most ground-breaking, important, etc., artist you might have a point.

But I believe it says "favorite". Given DVDTalk's demographic, I'm not surprised Duran Duran would get more votes.

Re: "Favorite" Artist Tournament: Opening Round/Group #1

I check this thread periodically to make sure Duran Duran isn't still ahead of Ray Charles. And they are.

C'mon people, we're talking about one of the transcedent musical geniuses of the 20th century against . . . well, let's just say, a group that was not one of the transcendent geniuses of the 20th century.

I'd call this a no-brainer but I don't want to insult people without brains.

Quite frankly, the fact that Peter Gabriel is trouncing Thin Lizzy bugs me more than the Ray Charles/Duran Duran thing. But I feel your pain nonetheless. In the end, though, its about what artist/band you'd rather listen to on any given time.

Honestly, I think Thin Lizzy would have gotten more votes if more people were familiar with their full catalog. They have a lot of musical depth and wrote some great, great Rock and Roll songs.

I'm in complete and total agreement, but I can understand why they are losing to Peter Gabriel (*throws up in mouth a little*). The fucker is... or was... hugely popular and influential. TL was never that big in North America, and most people only know "The Boys Are Back In Town" and even that is one of those overplayed-to-death Classic Rock songs that people associated with Foghat, Bad Company, Boston, etc.

Too bad. What a great band they were, and one of THE most influential bands of the 70s when it comes to many if not most of the name rock/metal acts of the late 70s/80s. Albums like "Bad Reputation", "Chinatown", "Johnny The Fox", and of course the absolute 5-star classic "Jailbreak" should be in any serious rock fan's collection.

Re: "Favorite" Artist Tournament: Opening Round/Group #1

One problem is that Thin Lizzy had a relatively short period (less than a decade) where they were making music that anyone cared about. Gabriel has been making well-loved and critically-acclaimed music for 40 years. So, given that they both have artistic merit, Gabriel is gonna win just based on longetivity. Plus he has a wider base of fans. And, although I like Thin LIzzy, it doesn't help them that their most well-known song (Boys Are Back In Town) annoys most people that I know.

Well, the only reason that Peter Gabriel has had more longevity is because Phil Lynott died in 1986 (at a time when Thin Lizzy was looking to get back together after a 2 year absence).

And, you pretty much summed up what I was saying - a lot of people voting on this one haven't heard more than 2 Thin Lizzy songs, "The Boys Are Back In Town," being one of them (and that was a throwaway track that almost didn't make it on to the Jailbreak album). It just ended up being their biggest hit single.

Doesn't matter why he has had more longetivity, all that matters is that he has, and it has made him a more memorable artist, which is what matters in a tourney like this.

^I still dont get it.

I have to say after loving the Smashing Pumpkins cover of Thin Lizzy's "Dancing in the Moonlight" for years I have always been curious to hear Thin Lizzy's version of the song. After hearing it now in the above video clip I wish i could unwatch it. IS the album version that bad too?

It's pretty much the same without the spontaneity.

Which is to say that it's still far superior to the version that the Pumpkins mumble through at 16rpm on acoustic guitars.

I don't get all of the hate for Peter Gabriel. I can understand if this was Phil Collins, who I like the early solo material of, but eventually morphed into a Michael Bolton/Josh Groban type who makes music for 40 year old housewives. But Gabriel? Come on, Scratch, Security and So were three of the best albums of the 80's and an amazing streak of records.

Could we not post a million youtube videos in these threads? If someone doesn't like a band, or likes their opponent more, just deal with it. Don't try to proselytize.
