8 is a million? (Is that the, "New math," from the 70's?)
Seriously, if people are voting against a band that they've only heard one or two songs from I don't think it's unreasonable to at least expose them to some of their other material so people can make informed votes.
No harm, no foul.

Peter Gabriel and Thin Lizzy - truly apples and oranges.

I'd say it's less about proselytizing, and more about exposure. What difference does it make anyhow? If you don't like 'em, don't play 'em, no blood no foul.

Probably, but I have been exposed to a lot of good bands through these forums I would not have otherwise known about. I like that people are excited and want to share bands they really like. It is pretty easy to ignore the youtube clips if you don’t want to watch them.

I only picked Hendrix 'cause I've never heard Air. I don't listen to Hendrix at all and never have, but he's influenced so many players I do like, I had to give the vote to him.
Also never cared much for Thin Lizzy - and I don't think that would have changed with a larger catalog. Gabriel was much more groundbreaking IMO. Listening to (Melt) and Security, I'm still amazed at the things being done on those records considering when they were made.

I expected I would abstain in a lot of these matches due to a combination of unfamiliarity and indifference. I have passed on Round 1 in its entirety, deferring to more interested and dedicated fans.

Lighten up Francis, it was a joke.
It's just that we seem to like pretty much all the same music, and you not liking Hendrix threw me for a loop. And FWIW, I've also been listening to him since I was a kid (early '80s for me, compared to probably mid-'70s for you), and while his official albums don't hold as much interest as they used to, there's still a shit-ton more recordings out there that have kept him fresh and interesting over the years (a great majority of which was never released when you were a kid). And as I've grown as a musician/guitar player, his stuff opens up even more. So it's even more perplexing that another musician can dismiss him so offhandedly.

It's not "so offhandedly". That was one of the two votes I actually had to think about (Fleetwood Mac vs. The Cars was the other one.) He was obviously talented and influential, but I just can't get that interested in listening to him. Maybe it's because I've played with so many guitar players who were influenced by him but just couldn't pull it off, so every time I hear one of his recordings I think of that instead.

Ugh, yeah, tell me about it. It's not his notes that are tough to pull of, but his feel. And it's that feel that keeps me coming back to him and the lack of that feel which keeps me from going back to other childhood favorites like Rush.

Sad that it has to turn into junior high because of pitting two artists against each other. Some people like artists you don't like, and some people hate artists you adore. It's pure and simple and nobody should have to justify their music tastes to anyone.

But, whatever, I'm up for what's good. If you'd like arguments via youtube about the various bands, that'll work for me.

Wow! This is one of the most confusing posts I've read in a long time.

It's a scroll bar. You can use it to move right on past whatever you don't want to read. If you find that process even remotely arduous, there's no helping you.
Also contributing to the topic rather than bitching about what other people are doing might be a tad more constructive and a whole lot more interesting, but that's just me.

Abstain
Jimi Hendrix - liked him from the experience to band of gypsies
Rammstein - marley is great but theres no group like rammstein
Ray Charles - easy
Abstain - both are blah
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - I like them
Def Leppard - close
Cars - slightly less boring than mac
