Re: What happened to the Dixie Chicks?

I was born in 1979, but Dukes of Hazzard was a huge part of my childhood. I loved that show, and had numerous General Lee cars and even had this shitty orange ukulele with the flag on it. I was even taken to meet the actor who played Enos and got my picture with him when I was like 5 or 6.
I was very much in a bubble growing up, so I never associated the flag or the car’s name with racism. In high school I almost put a Rebel flag plate on the front of my car, not because of any love for the Confederacy, but because I was naive and insulated enough to think my ironic tribute to the show would be seen as funny. I’d have been truly baffled by my pissed off black friends if I’d actually done it.
It wasn’t until I got to college and out of the bubble of my conservative Christian upbringing (including a father that wasn’t remotely shy about using the N word around me my entire childhood) that I even started to see these things on a deeper level. I don’t think I even really consciously realized the moonshine bootlegger subtext until the Johnny Knoxville movie.
So this show gives me a lot of conflicted emotions today. On one hand, it feels like finding out your favorite grandfather was a high-ranking Nazi that escaped to America. On the other hand, the Duke boys I remember in my head would totally help out someone in need, black, white, or otherwise. I kinda want to do some research now to see if there were ever any plotlines like that.
The thing is, the vast majority of adults I grew up around sure as hell weren’t about to give me an education on why elements of the show would be seen as offensive to so many. Looking back with a clear view of how I was raised, I feel lucky to have escaped that racist, Bible-thumping, “all lives matter” bubble. So many that I grew up with didn’t.

Shit, I just realized I’m in the Dixie Chicks thread and not the thread about retroactive censorship of tv shows, so please forgive my inadvertent thread drift. I’ll leave it in case it provides anyone with insight into what growing up in Alabama was like in the 80s, at least from one POV.

The Chicks announce 6-show engagement in Las Vegas

The performances will take place in May.

The Chicks are headed to Las Vegas.

The award-winning group, formerly known as The Dixie Chicks, announced a six-show engagement in May at Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

Their performances are scheduled on May 3, 5, 6, 10, 12 and 13.

"Finally getting to play live in 2022 left us hungry to continue our tour," The Chicks -- which consists of members Natalie Maines plus sisters Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire -- said in a statement. "After so many years without new music, last year felt like a long time coming."

"We hope our fans are ready for more in 2023 because we are not done!" the group's statement continued. "There is a lot more to come this year and we are excited to get it all started in Las Vegas at the Zappos Theater this Spring."

Tickets go on sale starting Friday, Jan. 13 at 1 p.m. ET, at ticketmaster.com.

There will also be select presale dates for Citi cardmembers, Caesars Rewards members, Caesars Entertainment's loyalty program, and Live Nation and Ticketmaster customers.

In 2020, the trio released their first new music in almost 14 years, a fifth studio album titled "GASLIGHTER."

Re: What happened to the Dixie Chicks?

Needless to say, I just picked up a pair of tickets for me and the Mrs. via Citi Pre-sale. Pretty close to the front, far right side, but on the medial isle, so shouldn't be too bad. $189 + exorbitant Ticketmaster fees -- not cheap, but way better than anything else up close for the show.
The Zappo's Theater may sound like a new venue, but is actually just renamed Aladdin Theater. It seats 7,000., has held countless Miss America and Miss Universe pageants, and opened way back on Bicentennial Weekend.

Looking forward to finally seeing this band in person

$189 sounds pretty reasonable

Re: What happened to the Dixie Chicks?

I saw McCartney and Elton last year, and $189 might’ve covered my fees.

Anyway, I always liked the Chicks as a band, and followed a bit of their individual stuff after they went on hiatus, but haven’t really kept up with their new stuff. I think I even bought their concert video but haven’t watched it.

Landslide and Cowboy… still get plays from me.

Check out that Sleep at Night video I posted above. That song is intense.
