Just picked up Billy Squier's "Signs of Life" CD for under $40 on ebay recently. I have seen it around $60-$70 for the longest time.

Last year I found a new copy of Jake Leg Blues (Jass Records) from a seller in France for $28. I was very happy. It generally goes for about $50 on Amazon Marketplace.

Wow - I picked this thing up on Beale Street in Memphis at an overpriced record shop in 2000. I think I paid half or slightly more than half of what you did (thats how overpriced it was). Aren't most of the songs available on other comps now?

Is this price/value due to that article in the (?) Oxford American a few years back?

I'd only heard of the CD (and the disease) because of the article in the New Yorker.

The material may be in other compilations, but I don't have them either.

I haven't checked recently as to its "value", but I have a sealed copy of Dream Theater's Live Scenes from New York cd that came out on 9/11/01 with the original artwork featuring the burning NYC skyline inbedded in a Sacred Heart motif.

It was very quickly pulled from the shelves, and the cover replaced with something else.

A LOT of soundtracks go OOP and for big bucks. There is a niche market out there with speciality companies releasing limited edition cds of obscure soundtracks for $50-60 retail. They're not in stores or online with regular retailers like Amazon, only through "genre" retailers. Somewhat like the trading cards and comics only availabe from dealers and comic shops but not traditional retail.

Really?! Why? I have this on both CD and tape. My favorite ATL album - so mine are definitely not mint with so many listenings.

edit to add: most I ever spent for one "hard to find" (at the time) item was $50 for the original 12" of the Beastie Boys "An Exciting Evening At Home With Shadrach, Meshach And Abednego" (this was before the re-issue)

Had no idea. Just read the other post about liscensing issues, but it's still odd to think this is rare at the moment.

Are ANY CD's collectible?

Since we use our IPods now all the time we really have no use for CD's anymore...We have been buying CD's since they came out and have well over 1500 cds, are any early release cd's collectible? Are they OOP cd's that are worth something? Any web sites that provide this kind of info?

I don't know about an official site, but there is a thread about this a few posts down.

When I used to raid CDs at pawn shops to sell on Ebay I'd often go and see what OOP titles were selling for by looking at completed auctions.

Pantera - Power Metal

I actually sold a copy for $50 fourteen years ago. I wish I had kept it.

There will always be a demand for the rare stuff. At the very least as a source to put it on your iPod.

I will use one of my favorite bands as an example... Feeder...

Picture of Perfect Youth - The orginal CD pressing was going for a good 100-150+ at times ... until being re-released for a lot less (That is why i got the vinyl which still has a little value to it)

Two Colours EP - Around $100+ normally ... if they actually are selling it.

Lee Hazlewood, after receiving royalties for many years, suddenly decided in the mid-90s that he didn't like Mustaine's treatment of the song and demanded that it be deleted. There are re-pressings of the CD with 7 tracks; these are not, as many Ebay and Amazon sellers want to proclaim, "original pressings".
The record was remixed and remastered with These Boots included, but all offending lyrics bleeped.
I've seen the real original Combat CD with These Boots go for $20, $30, $40, even over $50 (the japanese press with OBI, I believe) in the last year.

Metallica's Kill 'em All, original Megaforce CD, is very rare and goes for ridiculous prices.
Metallica DCCs go for minimum $75 if the packaging is complete. I've seen opened but complete DCC Ride the Lightning sell for over $100.
Black Sabbath japanese pressings
Any "target" CDs

Royce Da 5'9'': Rock City (the first release of it, not to be confused with 2.0)

It does?? Damn, I have that and I had no clue. Maybe I should look into unloading it at some point, even though I do enjoy it.

One CD I can think of off the top of my head, For Squirrels - Baypath Rd. Only 1000 copies were made (using their student loan money for it) back in 1994. After their tragic accident in 1995, after the remaining members recovered from injuries and such, Travis Tooke destroyed many of the remaining copies of the disc. I heard that from the brother of Tim Bender, from whom I bought the disc (and a sealed copy of the Plymouth EP) back in 1999 off eBay.

I've got that (and on vinyl, too) - but there's no way I'd part with it. Took me too long to find my copy as it was - and luckily, I didn't pay anywhere near that much for it, either.
