Selling the record means (is supposed to mean, anyhow) that only the buyer has access to the songs. When you sell it, you give up your right to listen to it.

Yeah, you own the license to listen to it as long as you have the disk, or something like that. I'm not averse to a pawnshop taking ID when buying cds from me; lots of places at least take name/address (though I could be lying). CDs used to be stolen pretty often, though it may have slowed down (people don't carry hundreds of disks in a binder in their car as much any more). I would resist making resale illegal though. The logic of "the original producers don't get paid" could be applied to virtually any resale of items (books, clothes, dvds, cars, houses), and is equally flawed with all of them, imho. (Admittedly cds, videotapes, dvds, video games can in theory be copied, but to try to illegalize resale of used items is calling every consumer/customer a thief.)
Anyway, I sold my Murphy's Law/Back with a Bong CD for 60 bucks on Amazon.com not too long ago.

No offense meant (and I get your point) but...

spoken like an RIAA lawyer. When you sell a used Taurus, do you pay Ford?

I love the RIAA's response to any strategic challenge: lobby Congress for ridiculous legislation and sue the pants off of anyone who violates their absurd rules. The good news, to me, is that it's not going to last. The recording industry is in big trouble and I don't see a way out for them. Musicians making money off of live performance and giving away recordings is probably where we're going to wind up. Luckyl, profession-sounding recordings are much, much cheaper and easier to make than they used to be.

Releases on the long-defunct Enigma label often go for good money:
-Hurricane Take What You Want EP - $65
-Tim Buckley Starsailor or Blue Afternoon - $80
-GTO's Permanent Damage - $50
-The Plugz' Electrify Me and Better Luck used to bring around $50 each, but the proliferation of bootlegs has driven their prices down to around $20.
-Their series of Bill Nelson reissues still go for $30 to $60 each.

A few ridiculous prices I've seen recently:
-Mindless Self Indulgence S/T - a sealed copy just went for $395!
-PainKiller Rituals: Live in Japan - sold with a BIN of $125
-Alan Silvestri's Predator OST - $265

A couple more that surprised me:

Rasputina - How We Quit the Forest is apparently out of print (why?) and "cut out" copies (with a hole punched through the UPC code) are going for $25, while non-cut out copies are anywhere from $30-70.

Vanessa Daou - Make You Love Like most of her stuff this is unfortunately out of print. Most of her other albums can be found used for $5-10. This one, easily her best, is selling for $50-70 at Amazon.

I sold my copy of Evanescence's first record Origin for $192 about 4 years ago. Bought it for $15 from the record label. I have no idea how much they go for now. I know that it has been bootleged quite a lot.

I have the following OOP CDs. Don't know what they sell for though:

Metallica - Kill 'em All (Megaforce label)
Metallica - Kill 'em All (early Elektra version with Am I Evil? and Blitzkreig)
Metallica - Jump in the Fire / Creeping Death (2-in-1 Vertigo label)
Metallica - Garage Days Re-Revisited (I'mm sure this one is quite common)

Body Count - Cop Killer (before the cover was changed and the song was removed)

Wildside - Under the Influence (still one of my favorite CDs from when hair metal was on its way out the door)

Def Leppard - High n Dry (with Me & My Wine and Bringing on the Heartbreak remix)

Iron Maiden (all the Castle Records 2-disk picture CDs)

Megadeth - Killing Is My Business … And Business Is Good (original version with These Boots)

I don't think I have any rare cd's but I do have the original pressing of the Beatles White Album on vinyl. It's really my Dad's but I doubt he'll ever ask for it back. I'll never sell it anyways since it's not really mine.

Well actually I did just get a copy of De La Soul's debut with the bonus disk, I don't know how rare it is but Amazon has (or at least had) brand new copies for sale. I have no idea where they got them as they didn't have them in stock for months.

-Hardcore Devo Vol. 1(also released in a digi-pak version)
-Hardcore Devo Vol. 2
-Live: The Mongoloid Years
-E-Z Listening Disc
Plus Ryko reissued Now It Can Be Told, Smooth Noodle Maps, and Total Devo after Enigma folded, although these three probably aren't as highly sought after.

The original version of Marilyn Manson's 'Smells Like Children' with the 2 extra songs 'Abuse Parts 1 and 2' is really rare. I haven't seen one on ebay in years. Back in 2003 there was one on ebay going for $500 and then ebay shut it down.

you're referring to the bootleg (KTS) version, right?

I know the Karate Kid soundtrack and the Goonies soundtrack used to both sell for mega bucks.

I found a japanese site that had the Goonies soundtrack for around $20, I bought three, I sold one on ebay for $80 and gave the other two to friends.

Of course, that was about 6 years ago or so, don't know about what it goes for now.

And the Karate Kid soundtrack has been re-released.

I have about 600 cds, some really oddball ones, I should start looking them up on Amazon/Ebay. I hardly ever play them at all anymore since I have so many mp3's.

Too bad the original record doesn't sell for as much as the CD, I'd have that sucker up on eBay.

Anyone know how rare Soundgarden's BadMotorFinger w/ the limited CD S.O.M.M.S. is? I see a lot of BadMotorFinger auctions on eBay, but none that include the bonus disc.

Oh, and to reply to something earlier in the thread - NEVER use Amazon.com's secondary market pricings as an indicator of value. Some moron sees that his item is out of print and immediately puts it up for an insane amount of money thinking that OOP = value. IMHO, eBay sales are the true guage of value. Anything else is a dealer pricing it at what they want for it. eBay sales are what people are actually willing to pay for it.

The Lethal Weapon score goes for around $100. I think there were only 3000 or so pressed.

Haven't checked recently, but I wonder how much the difference there is in price is between the original A&M pressing, and the Spitfire re-issue that was out very briefly before going out of print, too. I found my copy of the A&M version in a used CD store in mint condition for all of $3.00 - couldn't believe my luck.

I have the original Combat CD of this too, but I wasn't aware that "These Boots" was no longer on the album. Why is that?

Dennis DeYoung's "Desert Moon" used to go for high prices a long time ago, but some guy got his hands on a buttload of copies from somewhere, went on to eBay and BIN'ed them all for about $12 each. Needless to say they don't fetch the high price anymore, since he saturated the market with them.

From another forum...

Interesting article in today's Wall St Journal (April 20, 2007) about the constant re-issue of some re-issues(Elvis Costello), it hits upon Nick Lowe owns all his masters and has been waiting for all worldwide licenses to expire before he re-issues his out -of-print albums either the end of this year of the beginning of 2008. So hold on...
