Van Halen possibly reuniting with Roth again!

I read something over at Billboard about it, its a shame though that they couldn't have all the original members because it just doesn't seem the same.

SeekOnce 01-24-07 08:17 PM

Oh gawd, make'em stop.

At least release a new song or two to make it less obvious that it's just about the money.

TheMadMonk 01-24-07 08:20 PM

12 years ago I might have been excited.

Josh-da-man 01-24-07 09:19 PM

I give them two weeks, tops.

DVD Josh 01-24-07 10:02 PM

No.

porieux 01-25-07 03:56 AM

I don't think it would really matter if it was Michael Anthony or someone else, his playing isn't particularly distinctive anyway IMO.

His harmony vocals would be missed though...his bass playing is not much, but his backup vocals are pretty distinctive.

TGM 01-25-07 05:23 AM

that's craptastic!

cdollaz 01-25-07 07:20 AM

Yep, Anthony's harmonies are a BIG part of the Van Halen sound.

SmackDaddy 01-25-07 07:47 AM

So true. Anyone catch the Sammy concert on HDNET? Anthony comes out for the last part and they run through some Van Halen tunes. Like others have said, his vocal harmonies are just as much a part of the Van Halen sound as anything else.

I wonder if this will go the way of the "Guns n Roses" tour.

darkside 01-25-07 08:21 AM

One of my favorite bands a decade ago. Now I wouldn't watch them for free even with Roth.

B5Erik 01-25-07 10:02 AM

I've never seen Van Halen live. I just didn't care much when Sammy was in the band - I would have seen them in the 80's for sure, though, if Dave hadn't left the band.

If the original line-up is there (Michael Anthony included), then I might consider seeing them, depending on how well they're playing (if reviews from both fans and critics say that they've lost it and are just a shadow of their former selves then I won't bother).

Exactly, and since he's done background/harmonies on all their songs, he'd be more missed than either Roth or Hagar.

Mordred 01-25-07 10:23 AM

Wow. I can't believe so many people feel the same way.

Eddie it's over. Let VH die. Please.

cdollaz 01-25-07 10:35 AM

It's not so much that I wish they would totally let it die. I wish they would pick a permanent singer (Roth), include Anthony, and release a new album. Then tour after that.

nodeerforamonth 01-25-07 12:28 PM

I'll certainly give them a chance. I hope the tour starts on the West coast though. Don't know if they'll make it all the way to completion.

cungar 01-25-07 01:14 PM

Seeing a 50 year old man singing about being Hot for Teacher just ain't my cup of tea.

B5Erik 01-25-07 01:28 PM

I'm all in favor of a Van Halen reunion - especially with DLR, I just don't want it to be a half assed tour just for a payday.

I'd like to see a new album. Hell, they got more than halfway done with an entire album with Roth in the last decade, and that material is supposed to be pretty darned good - just finish the album and hit the road!

Numanoid 01-25-07 03:13 PM

Why wouldn't Anthony be involved in a reunion, did he die or something? (Numanoid is not a VH fan, if you can't tell)

Even if they released a new album, the album and tour would be about the payday. No one wants to hear the new stuff, they'd just want to hear the classic DLR tracks they haven't heard in years.

I just don't think EVH has it in him anymore. III kinda proved it, as I don't think Cherone was the main problem with that album.

Assuming the album is good, I would love to hear the new stuff played. Maybe Roth is the key since he may demand more rocking stuff. It's easy to understand that they put out a pussy album with Cherone since Cherone came from a pussy band. The Roth songs from the greatest hits album a few years ago were pretty darn good.

I too am no expert, but on a recent Howard Stern show, Eddie Van Halen said that Anthony is going on tour with Sammy and "not respecting" the Van Halen music....Ok.....I have no idea what that means, I'd assume bickering + egos......

SlingshotBandit 01-25-07 05:13 PM

I liked the Roth era, but it would seem too tainted to have him come back now.

Probably in the minority here, but I think I'd be more interested in seeing Hagar w/Anthony back in the fold. Ixnay on Cherone --although I didn't mind Extreme, as III Sides to Every Story is an awesome album (but not without Nuno).

Although I say "more interested", I probably wouldn't catch them at all. :)

Oh, yeah, this reunion will work out.

If EVH has run MA out of the band, then I don't see how he and DLR could be in the same room without being at each other's throats.

Especially at $100 (at least) per ticket.

I think it boils down to EVH being pissed that Anthony is actually friends with Hagar. That, and I think that Eddie is now a total whack job.

Chinese Democracy is due out any day now! News at 11.

True. I could live without the harmonies personally :)

Yeah, but it's still going to be a car crash (both visually and musically) at the side of the road. You just can't look away.

The Infidel 01-27-07 01:08 AM

Looks like Eddie was in a car crash and had his head reattached...badly.

I saw that magazine cover the other day.

Jesus... what's up with him? He looks really weird. Has he had a bunch of plastic surgery or something?

And did they photoshop his face onto another body?

Everything about that image looks fake.

porieux 01-28-07 07:47 AM

Is that Michael Jackson or EVH??

wm lopez 01-28-07 09:46 AM

When is the ROCK HALL OF FAME date?
VH-1 always televises it even though it's edited they would show any flairups.
They showed last year's Blondie uneasy stage gathering.

EVH shirtless with long hair and that same old guitar is just pathetic. At 52 you figure he'd finally let go of the past.

Ace Frehly now has competition for ugliest lead guitarist in a rock band.

Looks pretty damn good for a 52 year old cancer surviving drug addict alcoholic!

Actually, the scary thing is there are a few shots of Ace back in the 80's where he looked almost just like that.

Did Eddie actually approve that photo? (I can't believe that they'd print it without his approval - they do want more interviews with him in the future.)

Yet another compilation!

BLABBERMOUTH.NET can reveal that Rhino Records has set a March 13 release date for VAN HALEN's "Best Of (1978-1984)", the first single-disc ccompilation exclusively spotlighting 1978-1984, the group's original David Lee Roth era. The album, which coincides with VAN HALEN's March 2007 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, contains over an hour of remastered classics from the albums "Van Halen", "Van Halen II", "Women And Children First", "Fair Warning", "Diver Down", and "1984". Highlights include "Runnin' With The Devil", "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love", and "And The Cradle Rock". Also featured are "Everybody Wants Some", "So This Is Love" and "Oh, Pretty Woman". The CD booklet will contain rarely seen photos and liner notes.

"Best Of (1978-1984)" tentative track listing:

01. Runnin' With The Devil
02. Eruption
03. You Really Got Me
04. Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love
05. Jamie's Cryin'
06. Dance The Night Away
07. Somebody Get Me A Doctor
08. Beatuiful Girls
09. And The Cradle Will Rock
10. Everybody Wants Some
11. Mean Street
12. Unchained
13. So This Is Love?
14. Where Have All The Good Times Gone
15. Oh, Pretty Woman
16. Dancing In The Street
17. Jump
18. Panama
19. Hot For Teacher

According to MelodicRock.com, VAN HALEN - featuring David Lee Roth on vocals - will likely play two dates in Las Vegas at The Pearl at The Palms Casino on April 27-28 before kicking off a full North American tour sometime late spring. A list of 17 VAN HALEN tour dates was posted online over the weekend, but those are now said to be "merely a proposed itinerary/routing that is no longer valid," according to the site.

Billboard.com reported last week that a deal was nearly done for VAN HALEN to embark on a summer tour that would include 40 amphitheatre shows.

Guitarist Eddie Van Halen recently told Rolling Stone, "Everything is up in the air. We don't want to say anything prematurely," hinting that VAN HALEN would tour this summer whether David Lee Roth was the singer or not.

The band now includes Eddie's son Wolfgang on bass, replacing original bass player Michael Anthony.
