It was. In one of the promotional interviews for the new album he said they had to find something dramatic to touch on, because he's never really had anything dramatic happen to him.

Here's them "making up":

It's possible that his parents tragically dying from carbon monoxide poisoning because their furnace malfunctioned may be a bit worse than the Coolio situation.

The BTM special was before that.

I want Al to bring back his mustache. He looks weird without it (which I suppose is the point...).

Between Word Crimes and Tacky the former is the better song in my opinion. However, both of the original songs drive me crazy and listening to their parodies doesn't help much.

She's twenty seven. But her music taste is pretty much what's hot now and the pop star of the moment. But the flip side is I get a lot more of the parodies this time around since she plays those songs a lot.

Haven't heard the album yet but what song was Patton Oswalt referring to a few months ago? Judy Blue Eyes?

If it's the same quote I'm thinking of (from May 16th), he said "He satirizes a band I've worshiped since the 90s". Patton's a very vocal Pixies fan, so I'd imagine he's talking about "First World Problems", which is kind of a blend of "Debaser" and "Monkey Gone to Heaven".

I'm actually kind of hoping "Jackson Park Express" isn't one of them, since I imagine it will be one of those animated ones like "Trapped in a Closet". Songs like those already tell such a good story through the lyrics I almost think the videos ruin them a bit. I don't need bad animation depicting every lyric on-the-nose. It's sort of like how I loved Ricky Gervais's podcasts but couldn't stand to watch the HBO show they were animated them.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread

After listening to the album a couple of times yesterday, I really think Tacky works better without the video. Part of the issue is the lyrics don't match to what's on screen (namely when he mentions clashing clothing styles), that and some of the lip-syncing is off.

The Foil video is great and gives great context to the song.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread

May have been mentioned up-thread, but for those of you in the L.A. area, Weird Al is signing his new album at Hollywood's Amoeba Records on Friday at 5 p.m. (Contemplated going, but traffic on the 101 around that time is insane.)

Got caught up on the new videos last night. LOVE "Word Crimes" and will show the video to my students when we return to school, but the other two--"Foil" and "Tacky"--were only mildly amusing.

Yahoo's stupid video streaming service appears to be blocked from work. Will have to wait until I get home to watch this one

I like the "Trapped in the Drive-Thru" video, the only thing about it that bugs me is what the animator did with the part where he turns on the Led Zeppelin song on the radio, with them both being blasted back by the music and trying to shut it off. In the context of the song, the dude should be rocking out while the wife is getting annoyed.

And this song is perfect example of why I need the video as much as the parody. I do not know the song it is parodying at all so it wouldn't have much impact to me on the album. At least with the video, it's mostly Al along with the lyrics rather than trying to enjoy the parody alone.

I still haven't seen the video, but my wife subjects me Iggy constantly, so I have no problem appreciating it on its own. Still want to see the video though and annoyed that I won't be able to until this evening.

Handy is good, I made the mistake of watching the Iggy video (horrible song, beyond her looks, I do not get the attraction). I'll takes Al's version of this in a heartbeat.

I have enjoyed all the videos so far, Reynolds Wrap made Foil a sponsored video on Facebook

Handy might be my favorite of the ones released so far. They've all been really good though.

I was curious too as I hadn't heard the source song.. Horrible song and I can't believe that's what's passing for music and is popular. Though I did give the video a few points because it was made to look like the movie Clueless and even used some scenes from the movie incorporated into the video. I was familiar with the song Royals for yesterday's video from Al. I have never heard the song Blurred Lines.. but I don't want to kill my brain by watching it nor give that douche any more youtube hits.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread

I honestly don't know how someone can live in this country and not have heard Blurred Lines. I haven't listened to the radio consistently for 15 years and I heard it a million times. It's like completely ignoring pop culture.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread

I thought "Word Crimes" was an original joke song. To think an actually non-parody release sounds like that song is just laughable. Same with "Fancy". That's what makes them so great for Weird Al - he doesn't have much work to do.

EDIT: I actually started writing this before Draven's post above. Never heard this or "Fancy" before now. They're the kind of songs that would make me mute the TV if I heard them in a commercial. I don't listen to the radio at all for music. Never. So that's how I guess.

What I think is funny about the video is that the 12 year old girls who are watching it have never seen Clueless.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread

With so many saying they have never heard of most these parody's, what do you guys listen to if not the radio? How do you know what's new or you just listen to your old tape-mix from decades past.
There is no way someone can go without hearing some of these songs. It's nearly impossible.
That is unless we have AM radio listeners here that like hearing radio personalities bitch and moan.
