I would less familiar with current pop music if not for my wife and kids. I haven't gotten the album yet (going to pick it up on my lunch break), but I just listened to the Amazon sample from "Handy" and busted a gut, I think I'm going to enjoy this album very much.

It is possible to largely unfamiliar with the crap on the radio today - I am proof of that. I think I heard "Happy" in a bar or something, but I didn't know what "Fancy" was until it showed up very recently in some commercial. The only time I use the radio in the car is for sports on AM. I use my iPod or hard drive all the time.
I go to a bar to play trivia every week, and they do music challenges, and most of the time I just sit there while the rest of my friends answer because I have no clue what most of that shit is. It's not about trying to be cool. I'm just not a consumer of that music.

Yup. 10-15 years ago, I'd have been the one answering all the questions right. Now? I just don't care about the new pop music, and I don't have any desire to impress women by liking the shitty music they like, and get off my lawn you damn dirty apes!

I pre-ordered the album on iTunes. My friend sent me a leaked copy over the weekend. My pre-order went live before bed last night.
I've not listened to it.
I won't until I see all 8 videos because, let's be honest, the medley of visuals with lyrics is where Al shines.
I don't care about listening to a Weird Al album much at all, but I will never miss a concert.

Do you really think we're getting more than 1 more live action video though (if we even get one)? Word Crimes is basically just text. Most of his animated videos aren't even done under his supervision and most of them are sub-par IMHO. This is coming from someone who owns all of his albums (including compilations and Peter and the Wolf) and has seen him live more than 10 times (I frankly lost count).

I figured as such, though. His last real run with music videos was 15 years ago already now when Running with Scissors came out. Poodle Hat didn't have any, Straight Outta Lynwood had only one live-action video, and so did Alpocalypse. Everything else was cheap flash animation.
I get why he has to do it in now like this, but its still sad. His videos were sometimes as good or better than the songs themselves.

My favorite song on the album for sure, and I love, love, love the video.
"CNR" had enough live-action footage of Al and Berm (even if it was just their faces) that I think it kinda/sorta counts as a second. "Craigslist" had a bunch of live action footage of Al too.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
One way that Weird Al is adjusting is by releasing a new video from Mandatory Fun every day for eight days, starting yesterday. Yankovic got “zero money” from his label to make the videos, so he partnered with many of the web outlets he has in some way influenced, including Funny or Die, College Humor, and Nerdist.
“The budgets have kind of dried up,” he said. “Back in the day, record companies were rolling in money and MTV were the kingmakers. I mean, people spent half a million dollars to do a music video. That is not happening anymore.”

I don't count "CNR" because it's just someone animating still shots of their heads, but I do really like that one a lot. You're right about Craigslist though and I totally forgot that.

Not a huge fan of Al's, but Word Crimes is spectacular. And the "Tacky" video is the most Jack Black has made me laugh since Tropic Thunder.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
To be fair, Jack Black hasn't done much of anything of note since Tropic Thunder.
My 5 year old daughter recognized him from the Muppets. She didn't really have a frame of reference for anyone else though. Her main concern was "why is this guy making fun of 'Happy'?"
Taking this as my chance to introduce my kids to Al though, as they're familiar with most of the songs he's parodying on this album (thanks to my wife and her shitty taste in music
).

My wife is obsessed with Iggy Azalea for some stupid reason. She is coming to town in September, and my wife wants to go. I just flat out told her, "Do you really want to be the oldest people at the show?" She suddenly became much less interested after I said that.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread
I hardly know any of the original versions he is parodying anymore but it doesn't matter. It's not as much about poking fun of the artists as poking fun at current trends and fads. There are obvious exceptions such as Lady Gaga but for the most part I don't think it matters at all if you know the original song or artist. I'm enjoying seeing this video per day because it makes it exciting. However, I wish there was a pendant release date for a version with the bonus dvd. Hopefully he will package it with another concert dvd so it won't be a double dip for most.
