Immaculate Collection from madonna, how "altered" are the songs?

ALL of the songs on the Immaculate Collection were remixed. None of them are the album version. None of them are "radio edits" like GHV2.

Sometimes when a song is released to radio, it will have a "radio edit" on the promo CD (in the past it used to be on the vinyl 7"). The radio edit will be just what the name says: a more radio friendly version of the album version. It's not a remix of the song (although there are radio edits of remixes) but a straight edit of the song. A lot of times, they will remove a longer intro or outtro of the song so that it gets right to the first verse of the song. I believe that this was the case for Frozen (off the top of my head). I know that Take A Bow loses a repeat of the chorus towards the end. Human Nature is censored....and on and on and on.
I'm at work right now and I NEVER listen to that album (even through I have all the promo cd's/maxi singles that the edits originated on) so it's not something that I have memorized. If you want, I could go through and tell you specifically but I guess if you don't notice, then you probably won't care.

Yes, digital that's exactly what I'm talking about. You don't have to listen to it to get the specifics, I kind of get the picture from your description. I consider myself a casual listener, but I do notice when the intro, outro is different..just like Frozen.
I already have IC and I have Ray of Light and Music. So my next (probably dumb) question. There's a GHV2 (with lots of stuff from Ray and Music) and I'm assuming that IC is consider the greatest hits volume 1. Basically, I'm going to have to buy the albums to get even the radio edits of Like a Prayer, etc?

You're going to have to buy the albums to get the album versions. i think that's what you meant. Just like IC, same as with GHV2. You want the album versions, you buy the albums. Or find a madonna friend who has all of them to make a compilation for you.
I'm actually going to be doing that sooner or later. There are a bunch of singles that were left off of IC for one reason or another: Everybody (her first single ever), Dress You Up, Angel, Where's the Party, Who's That Girl, Causing a Commotion etc. GHV2 I hate just because I really don't like the edited versions of the songs. Plus HN is one of my absolute all time favorites and I can't stand the censored version. But that album too leaves off some singles. The best part about GHV2 is the packaging which is fantastic. I could look through all those tiny pics forever.
Any other questions?

Sure I'll bite. I remember hearing there was a boxed set coming out last Christmas to celebrate her 20 years. Obviously that got pushed back. Any news as to a future box set?

They cancelled the boxed set when she decided she still wanted to promote the shit out of American Life which has died a horrible death. They've been remixing it forever and she put out the "Remixed" cd collection instead.
Personally...I don't really want another "best of" cd collection. We already have that. And I also don't want a compilation DVD of performances where I'm sure they'll screw it up by having a talking head interrupting each segment and probably only show bits of the performances. Plus, it'd be a rights nightmare between the Oscars, MTV, VH1, the Brit Awards and the various programs she's been on.
With this summers tour, she's had to bite the bullet and go back to her older material so I wouldn't be surprised if something did come out to coincide with this tour. I've heard rumblings of a remixed album where it's not only new stuff but older songs newly remixed. I think that'd be damn cool but I'm also a huge fan of her remixes.
Again...release a COMPLETE video collection (a bunch are edited and a lot unreleased). Release a remixed video collection (fantastic videos done by dan-o-rama). Release some demos or rarities in a boxed set (like the ROL demos leaked to the internet). Release Blonde Ambition or the Virgin Tour on DVD. Just do something. And don't let it be half assed.

Yah I'm stupid for not picking that up. I remember when it first came out and Tower Records near me had it for about $60 I believe. I didn't realize that there were some mixes that you couldn't find elsewhere. Otherwise I would have picked it up. That and the fact that it's worth so much now.
BUt regardless, I'd say I already have 95% of that stuff. Still...it'd be neat to have.
Neat? Did he just say neat? Anyone who calls my show "neat" has to go.

Check the packaging.
It states that they are all edited.
Come on...they even censored Human Nature. lol. How could you miss that???
I will repeat, DUDE, that I have over 300 madonna cd's. Trust me. I know what I'm talking about. They're all radio edits.

Now that I've read all these posts, yeah, I remember that "Frozen" is shortened, and so is "Ray of Light."
Let's not fight. (For me, "dude," means "hey, I'm approaching with my hands in the air where you can see them, and I'm not trying to challenge you in any way.)

I'll have to break down and purchase all of the older albums on CD to get what I want (some of the earlier stuff I have on tape).

email me and maybe we could work something out.
I actually made a 2CD of B-sides and demos for a few cast members in a festival of plays I was involved with last summer. That went over big.
I have to do a 2 CD of album versions as well of all her singles. I may have to put some edits on there as the original Holiday was over 6 minutes itself and she's had a LOT of singles in the last 22 years.

On the subject of Like A Prayer, and to make things more confusing, I don't think the radio version is the version on the Prayer album or Immaculate Collection. At least where I live, when the song first came out, radio played what is listed as 7" Remix/Edit on the Remixed Prayers import CD. It starts off with Madonna saying "God?", the chorus is sung but "home" is cut off and it goes into Madonna chanting "Oh my God" and reading the Act Of Contriction. I always liked this mix best, it's much more dramatic. I don't know what version radio plays today since I don't listen to the radio. Express Yourself is the most altered song on TIC (for the better), everything else is similar enough to their radio versions that the average person wouldn't notice, but most songs fade out a little early in order to fit more songs. Vogue is actually extended a little, probably because Shep Pettibone remixed the whole album and that was his first co-written song with Madonna. GHV2 uses a lot of radio edits but it's nothing noticable except for the line removed from Human Nature to make the album Christmas gift giving friendly.

The version of Like A Prayer that is played on radio stations is NOT on the Remixed Prayers album. It can only be found on the Like A Prayer promo single that was sent to radio stations. It cost me about $50 or so from Sweden I believe. I absolutely love that mix.

Just in case anyone is interested..the new versions of IC and GHV2 I'm making will have 2 discs each. There's no way to fit all of her singles from each era onto one cd. And since there's extra room I'm including her UK singles as well.

I think you might be confusing the album version with the one you hear on the radio.

Are you going to see Madonna's show? Some songs seem to be confirmed by Warner Japan for the tour.
Actually, I have heard LAP on the radio in recent years, on KTU, and I don't remember the mix but it's not the one I was talking about or the album version. Either 95.5 or Z100 played that mix off Remixed Prayers, I remember it so vividly and it was the only place I heard the mix til I picked up Remixed Prayers a few years ago. I would listen to their request thing every night to see where LAP came in and it seemed to be the #1 voted song for weeks. For a while it was the only version of the song I knew. I also remember the DJ always having something to say about the repetitive "Oh my God". Once the song died down that version seemed to go. Too long maybe.

Wrong. KTU AND Z100 both play the mix I'm talking about. In fact, that's what started me off on my mission. They constantly played it so I had to have it. Again, I think you're confused.
And of course I'm going. Twice as of right now. Two different states.
