Without question Nirvana, because they opened the doors for a whole new wave of bands in the early 90's and they helped put Seattle on the map as one of the top music cities in the world.

I think it's obvious that Nirvana was more influential, but I also think NIN is and was a far better "band."
I'm a little biased though, as NIN are my favorite group hehe.

Tell the lie, tell the life!
<-- Rypo525's alternate lyrics to "Terrible Lie"
Seriously though, I'd have to say Nirvana was more influencial. Too bad Pixies weren't an option in this thread, because they were even more influencial, IMO.

Both great bands, Nirvana edges NIN out.
But the Pixies beat both.

Let's face it, we were just ripping off the Pixies- Kurt Cobain
I love everything the Pixies ever did- Dave Grohl
It's probably my favorite album ever- Dave Grohl, on Trompe Le Monde

I like NIN.
It always pisses me off that Cobain comitted suicide, and I really wasn't even a fan. It's disturbing really.

You can have all the talent in the world, but if you can't write a song, it doesn't mean shit. Dave could write songs (obviously) but didn't for Nirvana.

I don't particularly care for either band, nor do I think either band is exceptionally talented.
That said, I think Nirvana was the more influential of the two (for better or worse). I hear more bands nowadays referencing Nirvana as an influence moreso than NIN. Nirvana brought "grunge" music and the "seattle scene" into the mainstream for several years. Last I checked pseudo-industrial is not mainstream, and never really was.
I think Trent has more talent then Kurt Cobain or the rest in Nirvana has, but that doesn't make him more influential. I would actually say Ministry was probably more influential than NIN in the long run.

Ditto, some people believe anything.
Dave's a GOOD drummer AND a good songwriter, but not anywhere near the best of our generation.
But I also believe that he was just as talented as Kurt, and the fact is that even though he only has one collaboration credit, he contributed quite a bit more than he was ever given credit for in Nirvana.
