Nirvana or Nine Inch Nails?

Which is more influential Nirvana or Nine Inch Nails and why?

Capo2002 03-21-04 11:24 AM

Without question Nirvana, because they opened the doors for a whole new wave of bands in the early 90's and they helped put Seattle on the map as one of the top music cities in the world.

Hollowgen 03-21-04 11:25 AM

not exactly of the same genre.

auto 03-21-04 12:31 PM

Nirvana.....changed the whole landscape of music and made the 90s suck less.

whynotsmile 03-21-04 01:40 PM

ummm well Nirvana might be slightly more influencial, but NIN is and was a far, far better band.

Ergyu 03-21-04 02:30 PM

I think it's obvious that Nirvana was more influential, but I also think NIN is and was a far better "band."

I'm a little biased though, as NIN are my favorite group hehe.

Scorpio 03-21-04 02:37 PM

Nirvana had more influence overall whereas NIN influenced Industrial in a new way. NIN is one of my top five bands.

Jackskeleton 03-21-04 03:17 PM

This is a strange question as both were revolutionary for their respected genres.

My vote goes to NIN.

NaturalMystic79 03-21-04 04:26 PM

Tell the lie, tell the life! <-- Rypo525's alternate lyrics to "Terrible Lie"

Seriously though, I'd have to say Nirvana was more influencial. Too bad Pixies weren't an option in this thread, because they were even more influencial, IMO.

fumanstan 03-21-04 05:57 PM

Nirvana no contest.

89981 03-21-04 07:21 PM

Nine inch nails

db27 03-21-04 10:44 PM

NIN, is my preference although Nirvana I'd say was more influential.

Rivero 03-22-04 10:42 AM

Both great bands, Nirvana edges NIN out.

But the Pixies beat both.
--

Let's face it, we were just ripping off the Pixies- Kurt Cobain

I love everything the Pixies ever did- Dave Grohl

It's probably my favorite album ever- Dave Grohl, on Trompe Le Monde

MJKTool 03-22-04 12:25 PM

NIN

nodeerforamonth 03-22-04 12:42 PM

Nirvana. They totally and completely changed the way major labels looked at fanzines and the underground scene.

POWERBOMB 03-22-04 06:17 PM

Trent Reznor shoots self, nobody cares. Cobain shoots self and all teenagers and most college age students are on suicide watch.

Ergyu 03-22-04 06:24 PM

Since when did Trent Reznor shoot himself?

Rogue588 03-23-04 03:50 AM

Nirvana was way overrated, yet they were the more influential of the two.

Trent rules, however..

Agreed. Cobain kept himself alive just long enough to be considered one of the most influential in his genre. I never really liked them all that much, personally, however I do understand what they did for music.

I like NIN.

It always pisses me off that Cobain comitted suicide, and I really wasn't even a fan. It's disturbing really.

Mr. Cinema 03-23-04 08:59 AM

Dave Grohl was the ONLY talent in Nirvana.

NIN gets my vote.

You've got to be kidding. Dave (the BEST drummer of our time) only collaborated on one song for Nirvana. It was Kurt who came up with all the riffs and songs.

You can have all the talent in the world, but if you can't write a song, it doesn't mean shit. Dave could write songs (obviously) but didn't for Nirvana.

No, you have got to be kidding!

I don't particularly care for either band, nor do I think either band is exceptionally talented.

That said, I think Nirvana was the more influential of the two (for better or worse). I hear more bands nowadays referencing Nirvana as an influence moreso than NIN. Nirvana brought "grunge" music and the "seattle scene" into the mainstream for several years. Last I checked pseudo-industrial is not mainstream, and never really was.

I think Trent has more talent then Kurt Cobain or the rest in Nirvana has, but that doesn't make him more influential. I would actually say Ministry was probably more influential than NIN in the long run.

Ditto, some people believe anything.

Dave's a GOOD drummer AND a good songwriter, but not anywhere near the best of our generation.

But I also believe that he was just as talented as Kurt, and the fact is that even though he only has one collaboration credit, he contributed quite a bit more than he was ever given credit for in Nirvana.

He didn't, but no one would care if he did.
