I mainly like Rakim, Kool Keith(Any personallity is fine by me), and Big L. Hip-hop is slumping in a MAJOR way. I can't believe so many people list Jay-z and Nas lol, garbage rappers doing it for the money.

wow, almost 5 pages and i haven't seen anyone mention mobb deep! of course "shook ones pt. 2" made them, but "the infamous" was one of the last true gangsta albums.
also gotta mention raekwon and gza, they deserve recognition aside from the wu.

This will probably be bashed, as it's most certainly more 'nerdy' than the Nerd Rap listed in here, but Buck 65 is probably the most interesting MC I can think of in recent times... probably because he doesn't really fall into what most perceive as hip-hop. I bring this up only because he hasn't been listed, and I didn't really want to spend a whole lot of time agreeing with a good portion of what's been mentioned in here.

I'm pretty impressed with Field Mob these days.
They've got a humour and playfulness that recalls old Digital Underground, plus slammin' beats.
On a slightly more serious tip, I like Slum Village as well.

I always liked Poor Righteous Teachers. Now if i could ever find a cd of theirs to replace the ones i lost years ago.
As for now i also chime in on Deltron, Dead Prez, The Coupe, The Roots, Tribe Called Quest, and i'll add Saul Williams to the list - even though whether he is hip-hop or not could be debated. Also, i really liked Me Phi Me when he came out years ago - the kind of acoustic guitar with rhythmis lyrics was interesting.
And finally - I'm all about MC Frontalot (www.frontalot.com)

Also, JNielsen just because some people's first albums are better than the rest does not make them sellouts or make them suck, I agree with you. However most of the time it just turns out that way, what can you do. Just keep looking out for the great ones that trancend music like Rakim, Kool Keith, Big L, etc........
