Real Hip-Hop

I just saw cannibal ox mentioned on another post and was suprised, i was just wondering how many people on this site listened to some good hip-hop.

I am not talking about lil bow-wow, fabulous, or master p.

I am talking the good shiznizzle (hehe)
The Roots
Deltron 3030
Common
Mos Def
Rakim
Wu
Pharcyde
De La
Tribe
Cannibal Ox
Blackalicious
The Coup
J-Live

Anyone?

saoirse 04-30-02 03:41 PM

Yep, but I listen to some commercial stuff as well. But no Master P crap.

Thinkers:
Roots, Mos Def, Dead Prez, Jungle Brothers, Camp Lo, Goodie Mob, Common.

Underground:
Atmosphere, Vontel, CinQue, Urban Legends, Bookie, Creeper Loco

Bouncers:
Nate Dogg, Ludacris,

Known, but good:
BIGGIE, Tupac, Slick Rick, Snoop, Dre, Easy,

Other:
Jayo-Felony, Ice-Cube, Jt. Money, House of Pain/Everlast,
Chino XL,

Then the R&B Hip Hop:
TQ, Dave Hollister, Avant, Ruff Endz, Transitions,

Anyway that's a few examples of what I like. Break it down the way you like.

I listen to most that you mentioned...though I don't care for Wu-Tang anymore. They reached their peak with Enter the 36 Chambers and the first round of solo albums and have been falling off steadily ever since. Also, QTip without Tribe does nothing for me at all. Some I like that you didn't mention...

Company Flow
Hieroglyphics
Quannum
Latyrx
Divine Styler
Jurassic 5

SnoopDogg 04-30-02 03:52 PM

Probably going to get flamed for saying this but I think Eminem belongs in the "real" hip-hop category.

Also other people -

Phaorah Monch
Talib Kweli
Nas
Jay Z

RolloTomasi 04-30-02 04:48 PM

Yeah, I listen to very little of that commercial crap... the most commercial I get is with OutKast. Most of my favorites are are already mentioned (Jurassic 5, Mos Def, Roots), but here are some others:

Rahzel (Part of the Roots, but this Human Beatbox released a great solo CD)

Gang Starr/Guru (Jazzmatazz is just brilliant)

Afu-Ra (Whirlwind Thru Cities... great song)

And I'm more offended by Jay-Z's presence in this thread than Eminem's...

True. He fell off after his second album. I can't believe cats still listen to him.

My fav's

Aceyalone
Aesop Rock
Del
Illogic
J-Live
Jedi Mind Tricks
J5
Peanuts & Corn (most of the artists on the label)
Quannum/Solesides crew

and just about anything with Prince Paul and/or Dan the Automator

mc_delta_t 05-01-02 02:36 AM

Cannibal Ox is great. after reading this thread, I downloaded some songs...Wow. I'm impressed. I'm also hooked on Atmosphere(thanks SnoopDogg)

Thunderball 05-01-02 11:51 AM

I'd also like to say I'm currently hooked on the Lost Boyz

Lost Boyz are great, I was lucky enough to see them a few years ago in Phoenix with Redman.

Legal Drug Money is by far their best album. Mr. Cheeks has a solo album, you may want to check out if you haven't yet.

saoirse 05-01-02 12:26 PM

Atmosphere - overcast, I picked up when I was in Minneapolis two years ago. While there I also picked up Stereotype-Click.

Mine would probably be Renee.

I think the new Q-Tip will open some eyes. His last one was pretty weak, but from what I've heard (maybe?) online from the new one, it'll be nice.

The Roots, BlackStar, Common, De La Soul, J-Live, J5, BEP and Dilated Peoples are some of my favorites.

Lost boyz are great.

Legal drug money was one of the first hip-hop tapes i copped with my own money (along with 36 chambers, delenqent habits, return to the 36 chambers the dirty version, and beats rhymes and life).

I honestly cried when i heard about freaky tah

mc_delta_t 05-01-02 03:24 PM

Haha, i just downloaded some "atmosphere" to check it out.

Nerd rap.............naw, it aint bad, but it IS nerd rap (aesop, sjug, sage francis) which i am not the BIGGEST fan of, but it is aiight.

I think you mean "white-boy rap." Del is about as nerdy as they come.

Oh, and Atmosphere is Slug (MC wise).

Oh ****, slug=Atmosphere? Well there you go.

And no, i DO mean nerd rap.

Vanilla Ice and Eminem are both white boys, not in the same category.Del is a nerd but i wouldnt call him nerd rap (i LOVE del by the way).

Nerd rap isnt meant to be an insult, just a style.

The new Q-Tip was absolutely atrocious. I love the new Blackalicious "Blazing Arrow" though. Anybody ever listen to Killah Priest?

RevLiver 05-02-02 11:45 AM

Antipop Consortium

I have to qualify this and say I've never been into hip-hop at all. I'm more into indie pop, electronica and postrock stuff. Antipop Consortium combine all those styles with an experimental sound that I found incredible. Voices as instruments, orchestral samples, IDM beats and twitches and literate, multi-layered lyrics. They're from the underground hip-hop scene in NYC from what I've read.

I highly recommend their new CD, Arrhythmia, on the Warp label.
