I like Radiohead, but no way should they be ahead of Pink Floyd... heck, neither should most of the bands on this list. I agree with the earlier post about Led Zeppelin being much better than the Ramones.

Whatever those guys at Spin are smoking, I'd like to try some.

It'd like to point out that Pink Floyd was voted the #2 band of the century (after the Beatles, of course) on Amazon.com's huge y2k survey. Does this conclusively mean they deserve to be #2, not necesarily (i say yes ), but it sure as hell means they don't deserve to be #49 behind so much other (relative) crap.

For people that don't think Pavement shouldn't be on the list, I know dozens of people that only listen to Pavement and nothing else.

Did they just want to forget the Pixies? What is up with that!!

Alot of the bands on the list I don't like but these bands would still be on my top 50:

Sonic Youth, Husker Du, The Smiths, Pavement, Kraftwerk, Bad Brains, Velevet Underground, Radiohead, R.e.m., The Clash, Fugazi, and Massive Attack.

Also, I think R.e.m. should have been in the top 5 since they basically the kings of Alternative rock and in a way, was one of the pioneers of college radio and indie rock (not to argue).

Pink Floyd at #49 is absolute blasphemy.

Tool not making the list (when "others" did) is ridiculous.

People saying Outkast shouldn't be on the list have most likely never heard their albums and only heard a radio single here and there.

The Pixies should be on it.

The Ramones shouldn't be #2.

The Doors not making the list is laughable. Granted, they were not the most talented band ever but influence should be considered and other meaningless Morisson crap.

Rage Against The Machine delivered on that political smashmouth genre for a decade. They're deserving. So is Soundgarden.

It actually is pretty interesting who was left off the list. Bruce Springsteen/E Street Band and the Doors. I'm SICK of hearing these two acts, but you can't deny they are pretty massive and not that bad (not as bad as Aerosmith and the Stones today).

After looking at the list again my biggest complaint would be leaving off the Replacements. Absolutely one of the best rock bands of all time in any decade. And personally, I would like to remove Pearl Jam and insert Barry Manilow and his Big Suck Band in their place.

Oops, I should add RATM to my list, especially since I realized that both Queen and the Doors aren't on the list.

Stooges are a maybe.

I would like to say that Sly and the Family Stone should be on that list without question. They completely re-energized and re-invented soul music in the late 60s/early 70s. Riot is absolutely among the five to ten greatest albums ever.

I still think Outkast doesn't belong. They've been together for 6 or 7 years! They've released four albums. There is no way you can rank among the best after that little production.

I am glad Tool didn't make it. How long have they been around?

I think the biggest ommissions of all have to be the Temptations, Neil Young and Crazy Horse and Prince and the Revolution. How can Prince be ignored?

Spin just weighed this for their readership. Nu-metal fans who don't want to feel alienated because their taste is so limited.

As a diehard Prince fan who (still) has everything the man has ever officially released (yes, even the gawdawful "Rainbow Children" propaganda album) and lots and lots of material that wasn't released, I can tell you why Prince was ignored. The man has squandered his prodigious talents on absolute garbage for the past decade. Aside from a few interesting bars here and there, a guitar solo occasionally and the "Truth" album, Prince hasn't put out anything of note since the early 90's. He is not only - as much as it pains me to say it - a complete has-been, but a complete has-been who is openly belligerent to his biggest fans and supporters. With every new release, he seems to take glee in spitting in the face of his once mainstream audience. It's a shame really.

That's the most apt criticism I've seen leveled at the list. While some of the bands mentioned (Korn, RATM, Outkast) may have paper-thin reasons for their placement on the list, generally speaking they're there because it's a sop to the dumbed-down readership base of the magazine. A long time ago, on a magazine rack not that far away, Spin used to be the smart alternative to Rolling Stone. Nowadays its simply catering to the pimply "Abercrombiefitchies" that see nothing wrong with the monochromatic face of modern radio.

If only some of the snootier underground online 'zines (pitchforkmedia: this means YOU) weren't quite so obsessed with the no-hit wonder indie scene . . .

I also have a quizical look when noticing the omission of the The Pixies....but also I think The Verve should be on there as well.

And, do people/critics really think the Beastie Boys are that great? That is one that will never, ever understand...I simply see their influence as bringing rap/hip-hop to white surburia, other then that....what was that last album they put out? Sounded like pure static and noise....Lou Reed can get away it, but not those boys when comes to artful noise.

Predictably, SPIN were not wise enough to include Queen.

To be in a top 50 "of all time" you need some major time under your belt. Korn hasn't been around long enough to even consider. Might as well include Orgy or Limp Bizkit. What crap.

Although these lists are all about stirring up talk and debate and so I really have no problem with who's on it, who's not on it, etc. because it really doesn't affect my opinion of bands at all, I have to applaud Spin for *not* putting the totally overrated Stones in the #2 spot like most people would. They haven't put out a decent album in 20+ years and have coasted for the most part since the early '70s -- if they'd done like the Beatles and broken up while on top, I probably would rate them higher too but their recent work just stinks up the place.

i suppose - much like i do - they consider tori to not be a band - per say - janis as well became a seperate entity from her band

Gahh... terrible list.

Edited to say: Kraftwerk at #24 is a joke. They virtually invented the genre of electronic music. So many bands were overlooked while others (Outkast? Korn? Pavement? WTF!??) were elevated.

Some bands that should have been there:

The Doors - extremely influential
Front 242 - seminal electronic band, founded the EBM movement
Iron Maiden - is there a better guitar band than Maiden? I think not
Pet Shop Boys - hello, #1 selling duo of all-time
Queen - umm... how the hell did they not make it?

I could go on and on. But some of the positions just perpex me. I'm not a Stones fan, but #9? C'mon...
