PTA wins the DGA. 9 of the last 10 DGA winners won the Oscar as well.

Re: 2025 Year-End Critics and Guild Awards Thread

Not going to copy & paste all the winners at the Independent Spirit Awards, but Train Dreams won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Cinematography. Rose Byrne won Best Lead Performance (there is no gender-categorized award). Naomi Ackle won Best Supporting Performance for Sorry, Baby, which also won Best Screenplay.
The Secret Agent won Best International Feature (Sirat was the only other nominee up for the Oscar).

Honestly I don't know what makes an Independent feature and what doesn't. Train Dreams was an Independent film acquired by Netflix, I guess that still makes it an indie? And somehow Roofman is considered an Independent film even though it got a major release and push from Paramount?

I don't know what the exact rules are, but I think as long as it's produced independently, it doesn't matter how it's distributed.

Edit to add: Apparently there is a budget limit as well. In this year's case it's $30m.

Hard to believe a film can cost 30m and still can be considered an independent film.
It's like hearing homes costing 1m+ being referred to as "starter homes" in some cities.

I guess if it was much lower you'd end up with Iron Lung sweeping

Re: 2025 Year-End Critics and Guild Awards Thread

For me it was just Roofman. In no way did Roofman feel like an independent picture. High profile, big name leads, major distribution weekend. Produced by Miramax.
It's not Avengers, sure. But it didn't feel indie at all. $19M budget, apparently.

Re: 2025 Year-End Critics and Guild Awards Thread

Speaking of budgets, how in the hell did Bugonia cost between 45m-55m to make? Emma Stone got paid like 7mill for it, so that's not a big reason.
The film mostly takes place in a house.

Marty Supreme tied a BAFTA record going 0 for 11. Literally no idea what I Swear is, but the Brits apparently love it.

EDIT : NOW I know. Yikes.

Hell yeah! She has become one of my favorite actresses, quietly popping up all over the place. Glad to see her get some love!

Robert Aramayo's Best Actor win is the first time someone won a Bafta in the category without being an Oscar nominee since Jamie Bell 25 years ago for Billy Elliot.

So far the Globes, Critics Choice and BAFTA have chosen different actors for Best Supporting Actor (Skarsgård, Elordi, Penn) and for Best Supporting Actress (Taylor, Madigan, Mosaku).
Lots of uncertainty in those races still.

Re: 2025 Year-End Critics and Guild Awards Thread

The ACE Eddie awards were last night. These are the Editing Guild Awards.
No Oscar clarity here as Sinners won for Drama and One Battle After Another won for Comedy.
KPOP Demon Hunters won for Animated Feature and The Perfect Neighbor won for Documentary Feature.

Re: 2025 Year-End Critics and Guild Awards Thread

The PGA Awards were announced tonight.
I think all the BP suspense is gone -- One Battle After Another won Best Picture. KPOP Demon Hunters won Best Animated Film.

It's still possible that Sinners wins Best Ensemble tomorrow night, but after the sweep One Battle has run (Critics Choice, Golden Globe, BAFTA, DGA, PGA) , it sure feels like this race is done.

And speaking of keeping trends going, stop me if you've heard this one before but the PGA picked The Pitt, The Studio and Adolescence as Best TV Drama, Comedy and Limited Series, respectively.

Some clarity maybe in Supporting?
Amy Madigan won Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role for Weapons.
Sean Penn won Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role for One Battle
Jesse Buckley continues her dominance winning Best Female Actor in a Lead Role for Hamnet.

The one new winner was Michael B. Jordan for Best Male Lead Actor for Sinners.

As predicted, Sinners won the Ensemble Award.
And speaking of keeping trends going, stop me if you've heard this one before but the PGA picked The Pitt, The Studio and Adolescence as Best TV Drama, Comedy and Limited Series, respectively.
Yeah, keeping the boring going, The Studio won for Best Comedy Ensemble, Male Actor in a Comedy and for the late great Catherine O'Hara, Best Female Actor in a Comedy (Yay).
The Pitt won for Best Drama Ensemble and Best Male Actor in a Drama Series.
Adolescence won for Best Actor in a Limited Series (Owen Cooper as Jamie, not Steven Graham as his dad). There is no Ensemble Award for Limited Series.

Re: 2025 Year-End Critics and Guild Awards Thread

One Battle is still the obvious front-runner if you parse out that the SAG Guild awards to Sinners was specifically for the acting ensemble and did not take into consideration the screenplay, editing, music, direction.

Coda is a recent example of the SAG showing a trend away from the other guilds and towards the actual BP winner, but that was obviously a weird Covid year.
Best Ensemble has missed the same amount as it has hit in the last 10 years, missing on Hidden Figures, Black Panther, Three Billboards, The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Conclave last year (of course a qualifier here is that there literally wasn't an ensemble of SAG actors in Nomadland).
The Acting Branch of the Academy is it's largest.

No. The SAG isn't nearly as good a bellweather as the others, especially the PGA which matched the Oscars 7 of the last 10 (missing on The Big Short over Spotlight, 1917 over Parasite and La La Land over Moonlight). They've gotten the last 5 exactly the same.

To the surprise of nobody, the WGAs delivered more awards for One Battle and Sinners.
