Hmmm . . . In for the first time! I started to Letterbox a few years ago, but fell away from it pretty quickly.


Thelma (Hulu, 1/5) -- Rewatch, still contender for my #1 spot of 2024. Sad this didn't make more lists.


Guardians of the Galaxy (Disney+, 1/6) -- "Rewatch" . . . sort of . . . playing in the background during a virtual workday.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (Disney+, 1/6) -- "Rewatch" . . . sort of . . . playing in the background during a virtual workday.
Pacific Rim (Hulu, 1/18) -- Still a mindless, gorgeous, rousing good time!
Saturday Night (Netflix, 2/1) -- Loved this look behind the scenes and peek back into history. Made me want a series that took the time to linger and dive into the lives of the cast. Immediately went over to Peacock and started watching the first episode of Saturday Night (no Live, yet) which I had never seen. I was probably too young (born the year the show debuted), but I remember, and have a nostalgia for, the original cast and classic skits somehow.
Leave the World Behind (Netflix, 2/12) -- Like Companion, I want to rate this higher, but don't see myself rewatching it frequently. This was that special kind of movie I love, like the 5-star Civil War, where it lands the right amount of "mystery box." I don't need and don't want to be beat over the head with the lore, let the world provide what it needs to provide.


Beetlejuice (Max, 1/3) -- Still a classic and it holds up fairly well.
The Damned (theater, 1/15) -- The end is a little bit of a fumble, but The Damned is beautiful, eerie, and tense in all the right ways.
Companion (theater, 1/31) -- I want to rate this higher, but it isn't something that I will re-watch often. Great dark comedy-thriller, trailer gave away too much, but I managed to avoid it. 5 people in the theater and I was the only one laughing.



Cuckoo (Hulu, 1/1) -- I liked this as I was watching it, but walked away with questions that apparently do not have answers.
Chief$aholic (Prime, 1/4) -- Somehow missed this story when it happened; interesting doc!
NightBitch (Hulu, 1/5) -- Great performance by Adams; left me curious about the book because you could tell a lot was lost in translation.
My Old Ass (Hulu, 1/18) -- Excellent coming of age story with an interesting twist. One of the main plotlines was a bit awkward given recent events in one of the actresses' life. Trying not to spoil.
A Different Man (Max, 1/20) -- Fantastic concept, amazing performance by Sebastian Stan. Looses itself and its momentum when the big "kick" happens though. Second movie I've watched with Renate Reinsve in the last few weeks; didn't realize she was in Handling the Undead.
The Crucible (DVD, 2/8) -- I actually have never seen this. Brought the DVD home from school since we are in that unit. Whoops, boobies in the beginning! Glad I brought it home to screen it! I found it to be pretty good and an actual good performance from Winona Ryder. Oddly, I though Daniel Day Lewis was the weak link.
The Secret Life of Ibelin (Netflix, 2/12) -- This was one of my most anticipated movies to see this year, and it was an amazingly heartwarming film. Where it lost points with me was its documentary style which seems to jump around in time (and perspectives) too much.


Captain America: Brave New World (IMAX, 2/19) -- Absolute middle of the road MCU that does nothing interesting, but ties interesting pieces back in.

Longlegs (Hulu, 2/21-2/22) -- Started watching this and fell asleep (not the movie's fault, mine). Finished it up and felt like it was a well-crafted, but unsuccessful Silence of the Lambs impression.


Handling the Undead (Hulu, 1/10) -- Norwegian family drama following three families when members return to life; well acted, amazingly horrifying "zombie" designs, but so slow of a slow burn that it is more of a warm sensation that never ignites.

Crimes of the Future (Hulu, 1/11) -- I predict something will happen. Come on, something happen. Now. NNNNNNow. And … Now. Man, the future is boring.

Watchmen Ultimate Cut (Max, 2/15) -- I rate Watchmen much higher than this. This is the first time I have watched this version, and the added comic content just ground the movie to a pointedly pointless halt. It sent me down a rabbit hole though, as I watched the new animated version also, and went back to the much better limited series. Two days of being the guy who watches the Watchmen.

Watchmen Chapter 1 (Max, 2/15) -- A good first part of the story, but it largely didn't bring anything new to the table. Where is Part 2?

The Monkey (Theater, 2/22) -- Lots of interesting pieces that are not well put together. I was the only sicko in the theater laughing, but sadly I wasn't laughing along with the movie most of the time. Appreciate what Perkins was doing, but not what he did.



Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (Max, 1/3) -- This is what we waited for? Dropped it another 1/2 star after watching the original.

I did this for the first time, too, last year and I had a lot of fun. It turned out to be a highlight of my year, going back to see what films I watched and with who.

I thought I'd try something new for these threads, and that's make a post about the movies I saw this week. Just brief, one-sentence reviews. Maybe it will encourage more people to participate in this thread and/or remind someone that they have a placeholder post in this thread and want to keep it going. If this doesn't work, I'll gladly let it go, but I thought I'd give it a try.

For the week of January 5-11, 2025, I ended up watching at least one movie per day for 12 movies total. I haven't done that in a long time! Here are my movie reviews, in chronological order:
The Longest Yard (1974) - First-time viewing, and it was okay. It had that 70s clunky/violent vibe that's of its time and doesn't always work for me. Decent.
The Longest Yard (2005) - First-time viewing, and I was surprised that I enjoyed it more than the original. It had more laugh out loud moments for me. Less brutality worked.
Varsity Blues (1999) - First-time viewing, and I thought it was way too melodramatic, but by the third act I was hooked and it had a very satisfying ending.
An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) - First-time viewing, and I really enjoyed this. A little long, but well-acted and I felt the feelings for each character.
Twisted (2004) - First-time viewing and my first 0-star rating between last year and this year. Just awful. Bad acting all around, made worse because they are good actors.
The Mexican (2001) - First-time viewing and I have no reason to revisit this.
First Blood (1982) - I technically saw this as a very young kid but didn't remember much. I thought this was really good, it's well-done and the ending is great.
Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) - First-time viewing and I thought it was pretty good. I can see how this set an action movie benchmark!
Rambo III (1988) - First-time viewing and this had a direct-to-video feel compared to the other two. The first one is a film compared to this "video."
Faster (2010) - First-time viewing and eh. Not great. I fast-forwarded a bit and didn't end up missing much of anything.
Significant Other (2022) - First-time viewing and like Varsity Blues, this got better for me as it went along, and I liked the ending, it works.
The Untouchables (1987) - Watched this with my youngest kid and she liked it. I wish it wasn't so clunky and there's tons of terrible ADR, but it's a classic.

Eh, and I'll go back to the beginning of the year:

January 1-4, 2025:
Michael Clayton (2011) - First-time viewing, and I liked this. It seems a B story in a big movie, but putting it center stage with such detail and good acting, maybe that's why it works.
Patriot Games (1992) - I enjoyed this a lot more this time. For years, I liked the sequel much better but this time around, I enjoyed this probably the most that I ever have.
Clear and Present Danger (1994) - Years ago, I would've rated this higher but it's a little clunkier than I remember. The political intrigue is intricate and interesting, the alleyway ambush is top-notch.
Three Days of the Condor (1975) - Man, I love this movie. I love the plot, pace, acting, cinematography, music. The 70s "my seams are showing" aspect is distracting, but it's a solid movie.
The Pledge (2001) - I liked this a lot when it first came out, and I haven't seen it since. I really didn't like it this time. It felt overwrought and overacted. Others say Nicholson was overlooked, I disagree.
Adventureland (2009) - First-time viewing, and this was okay, but not great. Halfway through I got into the leads' relationship and they stuck that landing. This is a building block of things to come.

My streak of watching at least one movie per day this year continues. I think I'll try to fulfill this through January 31, and then let it go. I have some travel coming up and I know it won't always be possible to watch a movie every day, so I'm not going that route.

For the week of January 12-18, 2025, I watched 13 movies in this order:

2 Days in the Valley (1996) - First watch, turns out, I'd missed exactly zero with this typical mid-90s "I wish I was a Quentin Tarantino movie" borefest. Yes, even with Charlize Theron.
The Empire Strikes Back (1980) - This will always be in my Top 5. Always.
Return of the Jedi (1983) - I found myself enjoying this one more than I usually do. It works better than people give it credit for, I think.
Rogue One (2016) - I loved this when it came out, then thought it was okay, and this time the movie was re-elevated for me.
Solo (2018) - I've always enjoyed this one and I wish they'd make more of them.
Double Indemnity (1944) - I actually got my youngest to watch this with me and she enjoyed it. What a classic. Watched on Criterion 4K and wow!
David Cross: Oh, Come On (2019) - First watch. Meh. Despite a love for Mr. Show, I've clearly outgrown David Cross's stand up.
A Real Pain (2024) - First watch, I really enjoyed this. Well done, Jesse Eisenberg, and the buzz on Culkin is real.
Nightbitch (2024) - First watch, I think the "heavy-handedness" of the messaging really works here. I'd watch this again.
Ender's Game (2013) - First watch, and eh, it was fine. Harrison Ford earned a big paycheck for sitting in a green screen room, good for him.
Virtuosity (1995) - First watch, I really appreciate what they tried to do, and some of this is still prescient for today. The execution, ultimately, has that 90s clunky feel, too bad.
Mr. Brooks (2007) - First watch, I thought this was pretty good, yet tried a bit too hard. I sort of want to watch it again, now knowing how it goes. The ending surprised me.
Leave the World Behind (2023) - First watch, I'd started this a while ago, forgot about it. Finished the last 90 minutes and enjoyed it more after everyone got in the house.

I need to decipher my own rating system. I tend to rate a movie higher if I am likely to rewatch it, even if it is not as well-made of a film as things below it.

story . . . You watched Rocky Horror Picture Show on January 25th?

I thought I was the only weirdo who would randomly pop that one in.

I was humming "Time Warp" or something and started it and my kids got into it. We skipped a few adult scenes but overall they liked it. Not the ending, though, it gets long and slow after a peppy opening and I fully agree.

Highjacking this thread just a bit . . . totally agree.

And I am one of the weirdos who really liked some components of that Fox TV version a few years back. Not the whole thing, but parts.
