It is an event. Hollywood's BIGGEST night. Super Bowl for Movies and Stars!!!

Expectations for this event show are very high and everyone knows it. It crept up 4% last year. WOW it is fucking back baby!!!!

In my best Rick Flair

And 2023 was up 12% from 2022.

And last year was the most watched in 4 years

But yes, we aren't going to see numbers like 10 years ago because the entire TV landscape has changed.

The fact remains it's the MOST-WATCHED NON-FOOTBALL TELECAST of the entire year!

Which all comes back to : What Needs Saving?????

Apparently I am wrong in my opinion and it does not need saving. It is simply marvelous, wonderful, and entertaining the way it is.

I would like a reason to watch it again Conan may do that.

I'd also wager that the Oscar viewership has been dwindling because of the changing nature of the film industry.

The film industry has been polarized into big budget event/blockbuster/franchise/special effects films on one end and "arthouse" type of films on the other end that few people are watching, though a few like Oppenheimer will cover both ends of the spectrum. The arthouse movies, by nature, will dominate the awards and the general audience probably doesn't have much interest in watching those movies they haven't seen rake in awards.

That's really it. Titanic, Rain Man and Forrest Gump were all HUGE hits and major Oscar winners. Those telecasts were all well-watched.

It's unrealistic to expect the huge numbers of viewers to tune in to see if Anora or The Brutalist is gonna be the big winner.

I mean there is likely nothing the academy could possibly do to get 40m people to tune in to ABC. Those days are over. So if that's your criteria for "saving the show", then the show is as good as dead. And if that's the case, then what are we even talking about here?

Edit to add: And the ratings will almost definitely go down this year. Unless Gladiator II hits really big (and I don't think it will), this year's slate of movies isn't going to elicit much more than a half-hearted shrug from mainstream audiences.

Here's the headline from the Associated Press:

TV funnyman Conan O’Brien is tapped to host next Oscars

What are you laughing at, exactly? He’s a man, he’s funny and he has his own tv show.

Not really, cuz it is the "funnyman" tag that I find so hilarious.

Oh, I dunno. I'd love for Jack Benny or W.C. Fields to host the Oscars. (As far as I know, neither one ever did.) With today's tech, they can probably rig it.

Personally, I love Conan. But I guess some people just aren’t sophisticated enough to appreciate the subtle humor of a masturbating bear.

Love the Conan move. I think he’ll be great as host.

I always thought Craig Ferguson would do well too.
