To be clear, I don't think he's the right person to host the Oscars. But the strange, "I've never heard of him so he must never have done anything of consequence" attitude about him is not warranted. In addition to what's already been mentioned about him, he was also a voice actor in IF and The Super Mario Bros. Movie and played smaller parts in The Irishman and Green Book. It's not like he's never done anything in Hollywood, but his profile isn't necessarily at Oscar-hosting level. Sebastian Maniscalco shows as the 587th most popular and 575th most famous contemporary actor For comparison Regina Hall was 249th most popular and 287th most famous contemporary actress. Amy Schumer ranked as the 69th most popular and 24th most famous TV personality Wanda Sykes ranked as the 17(!) most popular and 77th most famous TV personality Clearly he's not in the same category as those other hosts |

You know a name that I've not heard mentioned yet who I think would be a GREAT host? Robert Downey Jr. He's an Oscar winner, a superstar, funny, charming. Universally loved. Plus the obvious corporate synergy with ABC/Disney.
I doubt he'd want to do it, even if a team of writers did most of the work. But if he were interested, he'd be a great choice. How about thinking somewhat out of the box and getting someone like Daniel Radcliffe as host? |
Re: 2025 Academy Awards
Dave Bautista. Not positive how it'd turn out but he'd definitely give it his all.

Re: 2025 Academy Awards
I'll do it.
Seriously, I'll be available that winter, I'd be glad to do it. And I think I would be good at it. I'll do it. |
Re: 2025 Academy Awards
I think James Corden has a lot of free time now.

Re: 2025 Academy Awards
Let's give Dave another shot at it, just in time for the 30th anniversary of his last Oscars hosting gig. :D

I don't think it's the be-all, end-all of fame metrics, but YouGov has a 'fame ranking' tool.

Nothing that I posted disagrees with any of that. :)
An analogy that occurred to me : Being Stand-Up famous is kind of like being EDM famous. There are EDM acts that are hugely popular within that world, like Illenium and ODESZA that sell out huge venues, but are just about unknown outside of that world. Somebody called Anyma has six sold-out shows coming up at the Sphere for New Years. These sorts of groups (? Artists?) are such a huge draw for people who are into that sort of thing, but pretty much unheard of in popular music until the release a pop single with someone like Coldplay or Sam Smith. Stand up is kind of like that. Ali Wong was a huge stand-up draw for years in that world, but needed a Birds of Prey, an Always Be My Maybe, a Beef to become a household name. |

Nope, we are in agreement, he's worked in things but he's not very famous outside of the stand-up crowd.

Re: 2025 Academy Awards
I know someone said Hugh Jackman, but no suggestion of Jackman and Ryan Reynolds co-hosting?

To be a little fair to Jeff though, Sebastian Maniscalco isn't really that different from John Mulaney, whose public output has also mainly been comedy specials. He's just been around a little longer and done more of them. I still don't think he's a good option for hosting, but given that Mulaney was offered the gig, it wasn't a completely outrageous suggestion.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...014b48ccf.jpeg Mulaney would have been my first choice but either of these combos would be superb. |
Re: 2025 Academy Awards
ABC won't hire the host of CBS's late night show to host the Oscars.
Letterman was 30 years ago when ABC did not have its own late night franchise, and Dave was the new king of TV. |
Re: 2025 Academy Awards
Hugh Jackman would be the ideal choice but did he lose interest or the desire to host awards shows since it has been awhile since the last hosting gig?
Poehler and Fey would be great but maybe they declined in the past and not interested? I know Bill Burr and Marc Maron would never be considered though Maron interviews a lot of celebrities and is a movie fan and he is working on a show with Owen Wilson and did some movies and he is working on a movie later this year and his profile might be getting bigger. He also could throw in some political jokes if you need that. |

They're looking at a host-less show with more star segments.

Re: 2025 Academy Awards
I'm glad Kimmel passed on it. Seems like he's been hosting for a while now. (Maybe it's just me though)

Re: 2025 Academy Awards
I predict that Megaopolis and Joker 2 fight it out for the most nominations.
