Re: RIP: Donald Sutherland - Dead at 88
Just read that his inclusion in Animal House was to meet the studio's demand for one "name" actor.
Sutherland was offered $25k in cash, or 2% of the box office take. He had such little faith in the film he took the up front cash.
A decision that cost him millions.
(Not that he was ever destitute or anything, but I'm sure he'd have preferred the many million dollars over 25 grand.)

A Canadian legend, he's been in so many movies that it's hard to pick one, but for me it's probably "Don't Look Now".

Re: RIP: Donald Sutherland - Dead at 88
Twilight Time released a nice Blu-Ray back in the day of a lesser-known Canada-UK production called THE DISAPPEARANCE (1977) that he was quite good in, with his then third and still current wife Francine Racette in a key role and some nice views of wintry Montreal during the first half. It’s kind of a quiet psychological thriller, not perfect, but an interesting watch if you’re only familiar with his high-profile roles.
After that I watched Benefit of the Doubt, another thriller but pretty straight forward. Again Sutherland is giving a good performance in a mediocre movie.

That's kind of weird to see him in 2010 saying, "Let the games begin" in that Olympics ad, when a few years later, he would be in The Hunger Games as the villain.

Re: RIP: Donald Sutherland - Dead at 88
I was lucky to discover him in 1970 when I saw THE DIRTY DOZEN for the first time and then saw KELLY'S HEROES and M*A*S*H in their initial release. Pinkley, Oddball and Hawkeye Pierce all in the same year. And then KLUTE and LITTLE MURDERS the following year. Then DAY OF THE LOCUST in 1975. 1900 a couple of years later and leap a decade to JFK. What a career.
His portrayal of Homer Simpson in The Day of the Locust was certainly worthy of an Oscar nomination, but that was the year that One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest swept the top categories.
Supporting Oscar went to George Burns for The Sunshine Boys, even though Burns was the co-lead in that film--he was not in a supporting role.

This a bit late, but it’s a nice piece on how Sutherland never forgot his roots in the Canadian Maritimes:

It was not his greatest movie or role but sad watching Lock Up and he is now a name from the past.

Stumbled across this. Rather sad, but he persevered . . .

Damn. And to think people still think us guys aren't affected by how others (and we ourselves) perceive our looks.
