Bugonia (2025, D: Lanthimos) S: Plemons, Stone

“Poor Things” director Yorgos Lanthimos will reteam with Element Pictures on a remake of South Korean fantasy comedy “Save the Green Planet,” Variety has learned.

Lanthimos — whose latest film, “Poor Things,” is nominated for 11 Oscars and just won five BAFTAs (including best actress for Emma Stone) — is expected to start shooting the movie in the U.K. and New York this summer. Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe at Element Pictures will produce the movie alongside Ari Aster’s Square Peg and CJ ENM (previously named CJ Entertainment). It will mark the sixth collaboration between Lanthimos and Element Pictures.

The long-gestated project, which seems to be a perfect Lanthimos vehicle, is an eccentric black comedy involving a disillusioned young man who captures and tortures a businessman whom he believes to be part of an alien invasion. A battle of wits ensues between the captor, his devoted girlfriend, the businessman and a private detective.

The original South Korean film was directed by Jang Joon-hwan in 2003 and became a cult hit and festival favorite for CJ Entertainment. “Green Planet” won prizes at fantasy festivals including those in Bucheon, Buenos Aires and Brussels, and markets including Rotterdam, Tokyo Filmex and Moscow. It also earned Jang the Golden Bell Award for best new director in Korea in 2003.

Jang himself was previously attached to direct the remake of the film, based on a screenplay by Will Tracy, whose credits include HBO’s “Succession” and Searchlight’s “The Menu.”

Both CJ ENM and Element Pictures had no comment. CJ ENM has a large library of Korean and Asian film and TV content and has remade several of its high-concept library titles, such as the 2014 musical comedy “Miss Granny,” which has been remade in at least nine local language versions. The South Korean company has also set up “The Classic” for a Thai remake.

The outfit’s U.S. division, CJ America, has sought leading Hollywood directors for several of its titles, most recently Michael Mann on a revamp of “Veteran.”

Lanthimos has already shot another film since “Poor Things.” His next movie, “Kinds of Kindness,” entered post-production a couple months ago, and stars Stone, Margaret Qualley, Willem Dafoe and Joe Alwyn.

On paper at least, this sounds like a very intriguing combo of a wholly unique original movie getting remade by a director who could definitely do something fresh with it.

Jang has only made three feature films in 21 years (and a segment of an anthology somewhere in between), which probably speaks to the difficulty getting high-profile productions to fruition there (and perhaps the extended amount of time that goes into making sure many Korean films will actually be good before the cameras roll), but I’d have predicted his second movie HWAYI: A MONSTER BOY would’ve been the more likely candidate for a remake as it’s more of a straightforward revenge thriller that would’ve fit in well in the age of John Wick et al. The rights were bought many years ago. His third movie 1987: WHEN DAY COMES (2017) is one of the best movies from anywhere about the need to push back against authoritarianism, something Korea did successful during that era.

SAVE THE GREEN PLANET, though, is so truly bonkers that only a truly eccentric director could do something fresh with it, and Lanthimos would seem to be ideal. On the plus side, the original wasn’t popular in Korea when it came out so it’s not like a remake will face any pushback from Korean fans.

This combo makes sense. I liked Save the Green Planet quite a bit and could see Lanthimos putting his own spin on it.

Wonder if he'll put Ruffalo in the lead.

re: Bugonia (2025, D: Lanthimos) S: Plemons, Stone

Focus Features has taken worldwide rights to Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest project Bugonia, the remake of South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet, which sees the Greek director reunite yet again with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons. The trio are here in Cannes with their Competition title Kinds of Kindness, which had its world premiere Friday.

Focus will release Bugonia in the U.S., with Universal Pictures distributing the title internationally (excluding South Korea). It’s the second deal for Focus Features announced in Cannes this week (Focus picked up Woody Harrelson starrer Last Breath a few days ago), but this one will be a notable coup for the studio given that Lanthimos’ previous Oscar-winning titles The Favourite and Poor Things as well as Cannes contender Kinds of Kindness were all handled by Searchlight for distribution.

Bugonia follows two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. It’s another reteam for Lanthimos with producers Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Element Pictures, who will produce with Lanthimos, Square Peg’s Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen, Stone via her Fruit Tree banner, and Jerry Kyoungboum Ko of CJ ENM.

The English-language version of the 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet, which was a huge hit on the international festival circuit and won two Korean Film Awards, will be the sixth collaboration for Stone and Lanthimos.

“Yorgos Lanthimos is a cinematic visionary with a singular style that has captivated audiences worldwide,” said Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski. “We could not be more excited to partner with him, Emma and the incredible teams at Element, Square Peg and CJ ENM to reimagine this twisted and darkly funny story.”

Guiney and Lowe added: “We are so looking forward to working with the brilliant team at Focus Features and are delighted to be reuniting with Yorgos, Emma and Jesse as well as many of the great crew we have collaborated with on recent films.”

Kyongboum Ko added: “I am thrilled to introduce the intriguing story rooted in Korean Cinema’s hidden gem, in collaboration with the ideal team of talent and producers, alongside the reliable studio. I expect that Yorgos will ignite a dynamic chemical fusion with his unique style and the novelty of the narrative.”

Christian Vesper, Fremantle’s CEO of Global Drama added: “We are thrilled that Fremantle is coming on board for Yorgos’ latest project and are proud to support the wonderful team at Element. Yorgos’ films are consistently innovative and captivating, and we are delighted to join him and all the wonderful partners on Bugonia.”

Fremantle took a majority stake in Element Pictures in 2022. The Irish-Anglo outfit, which is featured as one of Deadline’s Cannes Disruptors 2024, is coming into Cannes this year with three films in official selection: Competition title Kinds of Kindness, which reunites Lanthimos with his long-term writing partner Efthimis Filipou; French actor Ariane Labed’s directorial debut September Says; and I Am Not a Witch director Rungano Nyoni’s sophomore feature On Becoming a Guinea Fowl.

I was going to post the same thing. That's 4 in a row. Prior to that he was 2 in a row with Colin Farrel.

I saw the trailer for this at the theater, yesterday, and came to post that while these movies are beyond me, I am actually glad that Emma Stone has found a place to be an artist and not just a movie star.

Definitely not watching that new trailer. New Lanthimos is always a guarantee watch for me.

Looks great - the bones of the original are there but man did he swing with a wildly different tone.

Reviews from Venice have started rolling in as well: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/bugonia/

I really wish they didn't put out the shaved head in marketing. Would have been a crazy reveal.

Emma Stone has been making the rounds with really short hair recently, so there's a chance anyone paying attention to this movie may have put two and two together.

Great twisted batshit crazy fun. Plemons has never been better and Stone continues an amazing run with Yorgos, sorry haters 😉

Re: Bugonia (2025, D: Lanthimos) S: Plemons, Stone

Holy crap this was cuckoo bananas!! Seriously, you gotta stop hating the Stone/Lanthimos collabs, they just fucking rock. Now he's got Jesse in the mix and please just keep making movies together. The verbal sparring between Emma and Jesse was perfection. The score was cool and Robbie Ryan cinematography is always a feast. What a year for movies. It really does make a huge impact on watching a movie when you don't see anything beyond a teaser trailer. Having only seen that, I was hooked on wondering what was going to happen next. You gotta try it sometime. Anyways, go see this.
