Great acting but overall it didn’t work for me. I didn’t feel it earned the final reveal.

I can't put my finger what it is about kidnapping movies that almost always works, but it's probably my favorite subgenre of crime films. Is it maybe because you can't help but imagine how you'd handle such a situation; how you'd come up with a good plan to outwit your captor? Or does the idea of being locked in a stranger's basement look like a perverse vacation; ah, finally I get a break from all my day-to-day bullshit.

Forty-plus years of watching The Twilight Zone and reading SF stories ending with
That it's such well-treaded territory doesn't make the movie bad, this is right up there with Sinners, Weapons, and One Battle After Another as the most entertaining movie I've seen this year

I wish I got that much enjoyment out of it. I think part of that might be baggage I brought to it. Teddy reminded me a lot of how a very close friend acted for the last 6 months of his life. His trip wasn't aliens but it could have easily morphed into aliens and is beside the point.
One thing I loved was the sequence where Michelle initially went to work. Very Kubrickian. I never knew but from then on it was what I was leaning towards

I never saw the original, and went into this cold. It took me a minute to clock Plemons. Fat Damon, no more, holy cow. Looking over his recent filmography, I realized he's been gradually slimming down over the past few years, but compared to how he appeared in, say, Fargo, he's almost like a different person. Probably fitter than Matt Damon now.
Anyway, the movie was entertaining, but mid-Lanthimos for me. But probably the most accessible Lanthimos film since the Favourite. Plemons and Stone were fantastic.

I loved the film. One of the best of the year. The original Korean film "Save the Green Planet" comes out from Arrow on 4K disc in March. Definitely getting that one.

Just watched this. Really liked it. Bonkers, but very watchable. More violent than I was expecting, that’s for sure.

Catching up on my Best Picture nominees so I watched this on Peacock today. I really enjoyed it for the most part. Emma Stone was really good but Jesse Plemons stole the show. It’s a shame he didn’t get an acting nod for this. I thought he gave the better performance of the two. Still, it was great to see two actors at the top of their game going head to head.
My biggest issue is the ending. I wasn’t sure how it would turn out but i was going back and forth the whole time trying to decide which way Lanthimos would go with it. Neither would have surprised me. Sadly, I felt the movie was a really good metaphor for conservative politics and how people can get sucked down these crazy rabbit holes. Then, to me, all that was lost when
Rather than surprise, my reaction was “then what’s the point of this movie?”
Either way, despite my dislike for the ending, I really enjoyed the rest of the movie and still like it better than Poor Things which I didn’t care for at all.
Maybe not Best Picture worthy but still really good.

I thought more of you would have seen the other version. It was pretty hot with movie people when it came out.
I loved it. I already knew the twist so I watched it in a different way than many of you. I thought the director might fool us all and not follow the original. It’s still a joy to watch his movies and his stylings.

^ Truth be told, I don’t even know this was a remake until I started reading this thread a few minutes ago.

Same twist tho. Ha.
This was Lanthimos adapting it again with his own sensibilities. It is very different.
Still it’s kind of like watching Fight Club or Sixth Sense knowing what’s coming. If you read Fight Club before watching the movie, we didn’t experience the same movie.

Haven't seen The Secret Agent or Blue Moon, but I thought Plemons was better than Jordan.

Thats the question. I don’t know. There are a couple acting performances I haven’t seen so I can’t really say. It’s just a shame that there were three main actors in Bugonia (one was good for what it was but would never have gotten an Oscar nod) of the other two, the lesser performance got the acting nod. I realize they’re two different categories, so you can’t just swap one for the other and there’s logistics to nominations but it still too bad.

As much as I loved One Battle After Another, that wasn't an Oscar performance, IMO.
