Re: 2024 Academy Awards
It doesn’t sound like you’ve seen The Zone of Interest if you think it’s trauma porn. Even if you remove one of the directing nominees, I would then put in Celine Song over Greta Gerwig.
Plus the anchor point of The Boy and the Heron is also heavily WWII focused, yet nobody has a problem with that when discussing overly used themes.

I haven't seen Zone of Interest and while "trauma porn" might be a little strong, I don't need to see any more "man, wasn't the Holocaust horrific? Isn't it crazy how normal people were complicit in committing these great acts of evil?" movies made in my lifetime. I've seen Schindler, I've seen Night and Fog, I've read and seen all manner of accounts and can look out my window and see the beginnings and continuations of similar issues in my own country. I fucking get it. If filmmakers want to explore the horrors of genocide, there are a lot of others, including several ongoing.
I'm sorry, I know that sounds insensitive, and I understand the importance of new generations understanding how this evil happens, so we don't repeat it. I'm just over Holocaust dramas, because they let people pat themselves on the back and say "so powerful, so horrific" and I feel that the overemphasis on this as a historical event causes us to neglect ethnic cleansings that have occurred since then (or before then).

Because the theme is not WWII-related, it's about generational transition and the creative process. You could remove the war elements entirely and you'd still have the exact same basic story.

It is crazy with all his amazing performances Robert De Niro only has 2 Oscars and the last one in 1980 for Raging Bull.

Meryl Streep (2 Lead, 1 Supporting)
Daniel Day Lewis (3 Lead)
Jack Nicholson (2 Lead, 1 Supporting)
Frances McDormond (3 Lead)
I think that's it.

It's funny that Meryl Streep has this mythic reputation for having won so many Oscars, but Frances Mc Dormand has won three Best Actress Oscars to Streep's two.

Re: 2024 Academy Awards
I think the mythic reputation for Streep is her number of nominations. She’s been nominated 21 times! For awhile there, it seemed like she was being nominated for every single role she took.

I liked Steve Martin's take on it. No one has lost so many times as Meryl Streep has.

I don't think the general public understands that. I think regular people believe she has won several BAOs.

It is hard to become the Tom Brady of the Oscars where it is a subjective contest and have 6 best actor or actress trophies.
