2024 Academy Awards

Jimmy Kimmel to host again in 2024, thankfully.

Boring why can't they get a actor or actress to host?

I know Conan does not have the buzz anymore but he would be a better choice if you want to go the talk show host route.

Hasan Minaj maybe and brings a new younger audience.

You assume everyone would want to host.

Because it is a lot of preparation, everybody shits on your performance no matter what, and it does not pay anything.

Not a better choice for ABC.

He isn't famous enough to get that job, and I think ABC has wised up to the fact that nobody (except maybe Taylor Swift) is going to generate interest in he Oscars show.

Re: 2024 Academy Awards

Kimmel does a good job every year, he's a total pro, and the three women hosting in 2022 were an unmitigated disaster that helped precipitate the Will Smith incident. No need to fix what isn't broken.

While I hated the three hosts of two years ago, I fail to see how they helped cause Will Smith to smack Chris Rock. You really think that wouldn't have happened if Jimmy Kimmel (or even a back-from-the-dead Johnny Carson) had been hosting?

He would have never challenged the alpha of a male host like Kimmel.

Regina Hall made a few jokes about Will and Jada's open marriage which I'm pretty sure put Will in a mood and predisposed him to way overreact at Rock's fairly innocuous joke. I doubt Kimmel would have gone there during the Oscsrs and right in front of Will. It's not cool to embarass your shows biggest guest on stage.

Okay, that's a fair point.

Is it? That was hardly the first time an awards show host has taken a shot at someone in the audience yet I don't seem to remember anyone else ever smacking anyone like that on live tv.

I don't think it is a fair point about Hall's joke.

Smith and Pinkett-Smith both had spoken publicly about being in an open marriage, so if they are offended or upset about the subject coming up in public, then they are both just fucking assholes. If their marital situation was some kind of Hollywood secret, and Hall was outing them, then that is a whole different kettle of fish.

Also, Hall's joke was the kind where you already had to be aware of the Smith's open marriage to really get the joke. Hall didn't explain in any way why Jada would have approved Will's participation. I'm certain there were LOTS of people watching who just thought Hall was picking on them because they were seated right in the front row.

Plus, they were both clapping and laughing at the joke, like it was all good fun.

It seems pretty obvious that Smith went after Rock because of a build-up of bad feelings from the past, and that it was something about Rock mocking Jada's appearance that really got to Will.

Aubrey Plaza would have been a better and more hip choice.

She did a good job hosting the Spirit Awards a while back.

Decker 11-16-23 09:58 PM

Re: 2024 Academy Awards

Do you really want a hip choice for the Oscars? I suspect she'd give off a James Franco type vibe that would be totally wrong for the evening. Plus as I have said, Kimmel (and his writing staff) do a great job every year. Strike the right tone, always have some funny bits, have navigated through the worst imaginable situation already. I never minded Billy Crystal hosting (until that last time when they brought him back years later), and I don't mind Kimmel. Dude is a pro.

Re: 2024 Academy Awards

I’m not a big Kimmel fan but I can understand why the Academy would want to play it safe for a while. Their recent history of “outside the box” hosts have all been pretty terrible (It doesn’t help that I watched the Oscars a couple years ago all the way through and I don’t even remember the three female hosts).

Kimmel isn’t going to set the world on fire but he’s also not going to embarrass the AMPAS.

Overall, it feels like a pretty bland year for movies as it is. I expect Kimmel to make a handful of lame Barbenheimer and actors/writers strike jokes and little else.

Re: 2024 Academy Awards

Of the past 20 years Fey/Poehler are still miles ahead of everyone else as hosts for me. I wish they’d host the Oscars. However, I wonder if the Academy would hire the same duo that hosted for the “inferior” Golden Globes, though.

JeffTheAlpaca 11-17-23 04:07 AM

Re: 2024 Academy Awards

Why not and the Golden Globes is a lot more fun that the Oscars and every award is a major category in movie and television and not 90 minutes of technical, makeup, and special effects awards before they rush the last 20 minutes with the major awards.

It's a Catch-22 that from the Academy's POV, a host has to be deserving of the honor and spotlight, but there are few people of that stature with the necessary skill set that can be bothered to consider the job.

It was such a bummer the year Eddie Murphy agreed to do it but then backed out after Brett Ratner got fired after MeToo allegations.

I think Kimmel is generally good at hosting. I'd like to see Steve Martin and Martin Short cohost together.

I have zero problems with Jimmy hosting again and he's a logical choice. I wouldn't want the other Jimmy to host though.

Strong praise for someone who has hosted over 3000 episodes of his own show.

I'm a Dave fanboy, so I loved it. The thing I hated about that year's Oscars was Forrest Gump beating out Pulp Fiction. -ohbfrank-

It's too bad they never got Regis Philbin. Maybe he had enough hosting hours under his belt to have done a more than acceptably competent job as Oscar host.
