It is nice the people we don't know the names of get recognized for their achievements but 90 minutes of that does not make compelling TV for the average viewer.

How many people tune in to watch live is an issue for ABC and the advertisers, not the Academy. It's the most prestigious award and "Hollywood's biggest night," so the stars are going to show up and it's going to be on broadcast TV. The audience expectations for everything on the networks, except the NFL, have dropped, and so it must be for this.

The Oscars used to get 50 million viewers, but episodes of Roseanne used to get 30 million. Those days are gone for broadcast TV.

The Oscars have to be what they are, or else they aren't special, and then there's even less reason for anyone to watch.

Viewership goes up when popular movies and people are nominated. But we all know that the public's relationship with movies as a special form of entertainment is changing drastically.

If you think of The Oscars as a TV show, then that's what it is, and there are LOTS of TV shows to watch. If you think of The Oscars as a special and important yearly event, then that's the reason to watch.

Re: 2024 Academy Awards

The Oscars will start one hour earlier for the first time.

To ensure the show wraps within primetime hours, the Academy announced this year’s telecast, set to air live on Sunday, March 10, will be programmed from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. PT. A 30-minute pre-show will once again lead into the live ceremony, but slide down to slide down to 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT.

Immediately following the ceremony, ABC will air a new episode of its Emmy-winning comedy series, “Abbott Elementary.” (It’s got to be an Oscars-themed episode, right?) Because the network optimistically expects the telecast to end at 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 PT, this will allow for “Abbott Elementary” to round out the evening before local news in the Eastern and Central time zones.

Yeah. Good luck with that. Certainly there's no one in Hollywood that would talk longer than they were supposed to, right? God forbid we get another slap, and the whole schedule goes to hell.

It's weird that Across the Spider-Verse made the list. It's an animated film and didn't really think it fell in the category of Visual Effects.

My interest in the 2024 Academy Awards begins and ends with Nolan not winning best director.

That is bonkers. Especially considering it was all done the old fashioned way with in camera effects.

I was curious about that. According to Wikipedia, three other wholly animated films have been nominated before: The Nightmare Before Christmas, Kubo and the Two Strings, and The Lion King (the 2019 CGI version).

Wait, isn't that a children's show? The only time I've seen it was with my nephews' kids, who said it was their favorite show. And how could it be Oscar-themed since it's set in an inner-city public elementary school? Besides, what kids will still be up at 10:30 on Oscar night to want to watch that? Why doesn't ABC just launch into an early newscast to report on what happened at the Oscars? I like that it'll start early, but this idea sounds dumb to me.

I haven’t seen it yet, but I can’t help but wonder : What sort of visual effects are employed in Nyad, and are they really more visually impressive than the fucking Trinity test?

I thought so too, but to be fair, I found it the most visually stunning film of the year, so I can see it.

Quantumania should not be in the running. (the other Marvel movies this year, sure).

There's a big hallucination sequence where Nyad goes "Under the Sea" like she's in The Little Mermaid, but now that I think of it, I'm sure most of the swimming sequences are visual effects, that they aren't really out in deep waters. That's always more impressive to me, the effects you don't realize are effects.

Maybe there's some weird prejudice against practical effects? "They just filmed something in a clever way, they didn't actually build an effect." As though the effect is a tangible thing, instead of the resulting illusion.

I thought the Trinity test was the most underwhelming part of that movie. The atomic blasts in Godzilla Minus One put that sequence to shame. Glad to see it make the list.

It’s not nominated yet. It’s just the shortlist of candidates.
