Re: The FIVE and only 5 best Westerns
It's one of the hidden gems of Euro-Westerns. Directed by Sergio Corbucci (Django) and starring Jean-Louis Trintignant and the amazing Klaus Kinski. It's a pretty bleak film (one reason why I like it) and it's mostly snowy landscapes were unusual for a Euro-Western. I highly recommend it.

There are ten within ten miles of me. I'm not sure I can pick just five of those.

Magnificent Seven
No Country

I will admit I haven't seen The Searchers or Unforgiven, which might effect my picks.

The Wild Bunch
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
The Shootist
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Unforgiven
I'm don't count No Country for Old Men as a western. It takes place in the west, but so does Blood Simple.

Re: The FIVE and only 5 best Westerns
In no particular order:
Unforgiven - Made all the better knowing it’s the capper to Eastwood’s Western career.
Tombstone - People might claim Wyatt Earp is the better of the two movies but I think time has shown this is the classic of the two. So many great lines.
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - Possibly the best Weatern of all time.
Open Range - IMO, the most “realistic” western ever. It just captures the feel of what I think the Wild West really was.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - With the exception of the annoyingly out-of-place “Raindrops keep Falling on my Head” sequence, this is top tier all the way.

Re: The FIVE and only 5 best Westerns
I’ve seen it a lot. Usually when the two are discussed side-by-side, Tombstone is written off as a goofy “action” western while Wyatt Earp is considered the superior film. I disagree. Tombstone holds up on repeat viewings. Wyatt Earp is an overlong slog. Although I’ll grant that it’s probably more historically accurate.

Re: The FIVE and only 5 best Westerns
I think my top five have all been mentioned, so I'm breaking the rules and listing my top five not already mentioned:
Bad Day at Blackrock
The Naked Spur
Lonely Are the Brave
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
The Tall T
I could see any of these sneaking into my proper top 5 depending on mood and circumstance.
