Re: French Connection Censored on Streaming Platforms
So we agree. Once an artist sells their work to someone else they forfeit the right to alter said work. Unless, of course, the new owner agrees to the alteration. In the case of someone "owning" a film digitally, I would say that the same holds true. Said person "bought" the film as it was when it was bought. IE including certain n words. If the creator wishes to alter their work, they are, of course, welcome to, but that should not alter the copies that have previously been "sold". The digital streaming of films muddies the waters a bit, unfortunately. Are streaming companies going to have multiple versions of the same movie available based off when someone "bought" the film?

Speaking personally about the French Connection alteration, my issue with it is that they removed an entire scene. If the goal was to remove the racial slur, they could have done that easily and kept the scene in place. Simply drop the audio on the word. Much less of an alteration to the film.

Don't quote me but with photography, isn't it true that the original photographer (who pressed the shutter-release button) is always the rights-holder in perpetuity of that image regardless of who they sold the image to? For instance, school photographers take a headshot of your son or daughter and sell you the photos but doesn't the photographer still hold the rights to the image? I suppose it depends on how the fine-print is worded.

We need a slur for people who edit movies.

Meanwhile it’s funny how this thread has 180+ messages, but if someone created a thread to actually talk about the movie it would get like 10 posts at best.

Well since I started this thread and the director of French Connection has now passed away will Disney restore the scene that should have never been removed in the first place?
