Re: French Connection Censored on Streaming Platforms
I've never done a "panic buy" before in my life but I found a used dvd copy of French Connection at a local used media store and I've never seen the movie before so I bought it.

Thankfully, I still have the BD that was released in 2012, the Signature Series one.

In a thread in HD Talk, I was saying I hate owning physical media because it takes up space and it's kind of a pain in the ass to set up (I have a BR player and small TV, but keep them in the closet). And I was also explaining that most people of my generation don't really care about physical media because they'll just binge stuff on their laptop while they eat. Not to mention it's a more expensive investment. Most people don't own BR players. When we'd have extra screeners to give away at the office, only people 40+ would take anything, because no one else could play it. We'd have Criterion releases laying around after being out all day, even.

I'm wondering if this is just one of those "blanket" censorship things, where some low level employee just fixes it without taking context into account. Like, there's an episode of Cheers where the word "ass" is bleeped out in syndication. However, in the scene in question, the character is actually referring to ass as in the animal, and not a slang term for the buttocks.
That said, I'm glad a friend mentioned this to me a few weeks ago and I got the original Blu from Amazon for just $10. Only copy I had before was an old laserdisc (although I had William Friedkin sign it, personally)

Good question. I wonder what the method is? Is there a system that scans every catalog movie for certain words?
Is there going to be a 72 minute version of Pulp Fiction?

What about Blaxploitations films? Aren't they the king of using that word.

I do hope Disney issues a public statement about this or recognizes they need to fix it ASAP. It doesn't make any sense for an R rated movie that would only be watched by adults anyway. Plus they have countless older movies and tv shows on Disney plus that exist as is and carry content warnings they deem as racially insensitive.

But the industry wants you to buy digital movies instead of discs, and some have gone along with that. Services are more like cable, they won’t have every movie all the time anyways.

If they do this with Die Hard 3 I’ll flip. Not that I can’t buy the DVD. But still fucked up. And it’s Fox too.

And most people don't care that the services don't carry every movie because there's more than enough content to keep them interested.
This type of thing still won't make people return to buying physical movies just because they fear some movies which they'll watch every 20 years has a small scene that's censored - which they probably would never have noticed in the first place.
This is all disposable entertainment - very few give a crap about it.

If they don't have it already, they'll probably soon have an AI program that can scan movies and shows and recognize offensive content. They'll probably be able to automatically remove that material. I imagine they already use some AI program to scan new scripts for things to remove before they get made.

Of course now the Blu-ray is suddenly unavailable unless you want it from a reseller who’s asking a crazy price. I have a copy on DVD that I never upgraded.

It's Disney... This should surprise no one. They've been happily censoring for 50 years now, the bastards.
I'm glad I have two of releases of FRENCH CONNECTION. The horribly 'revised' wacky color version of Friedkin, and the proper version with colors as they were seen theatrically. So, thankfully I'm set and now own the definitive version of this exellent film.
I just know, however, that this unacceptable reach of wokeness is going to rub off onto many other films as well. That's why I've been like a broken record for years now: Eschew and boycott streaming. They own it, they chop, chop, chop whatever they want. You own nothing. So, buy all the physical media you can, and they can't take that away from you or chop it up.

Most people stream instead of buying digital. And most people who buy digital movies probably don't care about this type of censorship.
