Terrifier 3 (2024, D: Damien Leone)

CLUSIVE: France-based distribution outfit The Coven is launching world sales on threequel Terrifier 3, following the breakout box office success of Terrifier 2.

Writer-director Damien Leone and producer Phil Falcone will return to oversee the continuation of the franchise.

Plot is being kept under wraps but David Howard Thornton (who plays Art The Clown) and Lauren LaVera (Sienna) are among cast expected to return. The Coven will serve as exec producer and is already getting interest from buyers.

Filming is expected to get underway in November or December of this year for release in late 2024. The threequel is understood to be getting a budget in the low-mid seven figure range, a significant increase on that of the sequel.

Made for around $250k, Terrifier 2 took more than $15M at the global box office, including more than $10M in the U.S. for Cinedigm. The film, which debuted at Frightfest and FantasticFest last year, was noted for its gore and for leaning in to “old school” practical effects. It has an 85 and 80 percent critical and audience score, respectively, on Rotten Tomatoes.

The sequel charts the nefarious exploits of Art the Clown, who after being resurrected by a sinister entity returns to the quiet town of Miles County where he targets a teenage girl and her younger brother on Halloween night.

Priscilla Smith of The Coven said of the next instalment: “There will be a much bigger budget this time around, which is intended to give the filmmakers more creative freedom, and let them be as wild as they can be. And, all jokes aside, we are going for that Oscar this year.”

Leone added: “Terrifier 3 will be another boundary pushing addition to the horror genre, continuing the no holds barred, uncompromising exploits fans of the franchise have come to expect and celebrate. If you thought Art the Clown’s reign of terror in part 2 was extreme, you haven’t seen anything yet.”

I might watch it but truthfully I haven’t been a big fan of either of the Terrifier movies so far.

Terrifier 2 had a slightly better story than the first one but was too long for its own good. I also feel like Leone goes too far to try and be shocking. Neither film scared me as much as grossed me out.

These movies are terrible. I like gore as much as the next person but not to the point where you it just looks like the lead villain went crazy in a spirit Halloween store.

I thought Sam Raimi was supposed to be involved with this but just read Leone will be working a new project with him.

I still haven’t seen the insanely overhyped sequel but I thought the first one was decent for being a low budget horror movie. Considering all the other low budget horror garbage that’s released.

The sequel is pretty bad as well and beyond goofy in it's last act. Also, it's WAY too long.

Honestly, the almost 2 1/2 hour runtime has been what’s kept me away from the sequel. I’m up for long movies most of the time but shitty, low-quality horror movies are one of the few genres I’ll hold off on with an exorbitant runtime. An hour and a half is a decent run time for this type of movie.

The main thing the movies have going for them is the character of Art the Clown. He could be the new face of horror like Michael, Freddy, and Jason were for the 80s. Other than that the movies are overrated in my opinion.

And there is literally a 7 to 8 minute scene where a poor young girl gets stabbed repeatedly, dismembered, scalped and is tortured until she finally dies. It’s a very over the top murder scene. It made my squirm.

Eh, that can be fun if you're a gore hound, but fuck me if I'm gonna watch a 2.5 hour movie about a killer clown. Nope, ain't gonna happen no matter the hype.

The first one is decent but still kinda dull. The second one is just plain out boring. These movies should be 80 minutes tops if they are going to have a one note story and the highlights are the gore.

The effects are impressive, especially for the budget, but there is only so much gross-out effects I can stand. If the story doesn't intrigue me, then what is the point of the gory effects if I am bored the other 90% of the time?

Give me something like the original Martyrs. An hour and 40 minutes, gory as fuck but with a fascinating storyline that grips you throughout.

Martyrs was crazy - that movie stuck with me for days.

I've never understood folks who enjoy watching torture in films. I love a good slasher flick but once the tide turned to the likes of Hostel and the Rob Zombie movies, I gave up. You can have plenty of gore without the torture, IMO.

I'm completely dumbfounded by all the praise this series gets. They're the equivalent of the worst horror movies you pick up at your local Redbox.

I watched the first one after all the hype for part 2. It was ok. Still haven’t gotten around to seeing the second one.

Christmas horror movies are usually fun though.

I just read that Leone really wants to direct a new Friday the 13th movie - That definitely interests me.

Really don't get the appeal of these movies; hokey gore effects for non-existent shock value and overall just lame and derivative beyond belief.

Re: Terrifier 3 (2024, D: Damien Leone)

I give him credit for at least going in an intriguing supernatural direction in the second one, but that aspect was also a bit muddled and unclear. And I think the gore is exceptionally well done for hand-made stuff (with non-intrusive CG enhancements), especially compared to what passes for it in mainstream and even a lot of low-budget horror these days. He goes all in, even if it's clearly for the sake of itself most of the time.

That teaser trailer, though, was pretty anti-climactic after Leone's hyperbolic promotion of it (see above). Seems like footage that might not even be in the final film.

That teaser was pretty lame but I'm sure there are some out there stating it is the greatest thing ever made while frothing at the mouth for the next installment.

So will this be 4 hours long?

Re: Terrifier 3 (2024, D: Damien Leone)

It will probably be filmed in two parts that clock in right at 3 hours each part.
