The horror movie equivalent of a “pissing Calvin” sticker.

I really wish this shit-show franchise would just go away.

Just looks like more of the same. It’ll be lots of blood and gore most likely from overly long, drawn out kills. I still maintain that Art could be an iconic horror character in better movies. It seems like Leone thinks he’s making high art with these movies and they just aren’t.

This is the Hawk Tuah of the horror movie genre right now.

Better ride it out as long as he can.

We all have our own guilty pleasures. I thought the 'blood angel' from the trailer was pretty funny!

As someone who hasn't and never will watch these movies, is Art some supernatural being that can't be killed or a normal dude who just keeps getting away?

Mike86 08-28-24 10:17 AM

Re: Terrifier 3 (2024, D: Damien Leone)

Definitely something supernatural. Much the same as Jason or Freddy when you think he’s dead he gets back up again.

IMO the first movie was more enjoyable because they hadn't outright shown him to be supernatural at that point. A fucked up guy dressing like a clown is in many ways scarier than a supernatural creature.

Agreed. That's why I was curious.

I assumed he was supernatural based on the ending of the first one. I don’t think they ever really hid it.

Interesting to see Savini’s involvement in that Variety article. Honestly, I can’t see him bringing much to a film series that both honours him and outdoes him in equal measure, but it must’ve been cool to have him helping out, or even just hanging out!

I think I might try to see this next week. New movies are slow right now and I have zero interest in the new Joker movie.

I read that 9 people reportedly walked out of the UK premiere. For what reason I don't know.

So have I a question? Have any of the Terrifer movies ever been rated? I always thought most chain movie theaters have never shown movies above an R rating.

Re: Terrifier 3 (2024, D: Damien Leone)

I watched the first film last week and the second one last night. I liked them but something is missing in them. Sure, they are gory and violent but with Rob Zombie and the Saw films you actually have characters that you feel for when they are being mutilated and tortured. I also find the kills go on too long in the Terrifier films. The bedroom scene in the second film just went on and on and became funny and not what the director was intending, IMO. I will still see the third one.

Re: Terrifier 3 (2024, D: Damien Leone)

I think it’s that the story is secondary and almost non-existent. Add onto that the fact that the characters aren’t that great to make up for it. I also think the first two films lack the “fun” elements of something like the Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street films.

The films also take themselves a bit too seriously and truthfully the kill scenes are just overly long and drawn out. Not even so much that I’m grossed out but more like- I get it already.

Probably gore-loving “horror fans” who suddenly have limits.

Based on the behind the scenes stuff, I suspect Leone is absolutely fine if people laugh at the ridiculous length of some of his kill scenes or think they do on too long, as that seems to be his intention. If audiences want to cry and feel bad for some of his characters, that’s fine, but even in that bedroom scene (and others) he deliberately goes way beyond that so that it starts to border on parody. Parody with exceptionally visceral gore, of course, the kind that many people think they’re getting in the ‘studio’ franchise horror pictures but which is often actually truncated by editing, individual shot lengths, ratings requirements, whatever. Leone evidently loves to linger on the kill sequences (like the bedroom scene, or the upside-down chainsaw lady) so we can see every last detail of the effort that goes into making his pictures on a fraction of the budgets even Rob Zombie gets (or used to anyway).

I think Zombie’s films are often stunning to look at, but his screenwriting and plotting are weak and never improve, his characters aren’t any more likeable or sympathetic than the ones in the TERRIFIER films (a mark against both filmmakers in my book) and his refusal to work with established screenwriters (or leading ladies who aren’t his wife) have led to diminishing returns. Even the unrated versions aren’t as gory as they promise to be. Maybe more intense, but again, lots of short takes, fast edits, implied suffering. That works, absolutely, but it’s also kind of the norm at this point, so it’s nice to see Leone going back to the traditional FX methods but really giving audiences an long nasty eyeful, whether they think it’s overkill or silly or whatever. And I do think Art is often very funny in his mimed mockery of everything. :)

I've enjoyed both movies, although I wish they had edited the second a bit more. I'm down for 3. Dressing as Art this year to hand out candy.

Apparently, they are looking to now open this in over more than 2,000 theatres. Opening estimates of $20m or more. That's more than the list film total.
